For those of you worried about viruses, or those of you who just can't figure out how to work the program in the OPost.
Just remember, not all server set up tutorials require downloading stuff. (For instance the one in my signature...)
PS: I highly doubt this is a virus, according to their website:
(Please Note: If your anti virus says it found a virus of any kind please know this is a false alarm. You can use www.virustotal.com to also see what other antivirus software says.
If this does not work for you and you cannot get it to work, search on google for how to port forward for your type of router. Just remember to use the minecraft ports.
After trying to find an easy way to port forward and make a server, I discovered an element that made my life easier.
First of all, download the minecraft server stuff.
Download this program and you're one step closer to being awesome.
---------------------------
Once you've downloaded this program, install it and run it. You may be prompted for admin access if you're running vista. You should see something like this.
From the "Router" dropdown, select your router. It should be there, if it isn't try clicking "Tools > Update Database". If that doesn't work, you'll have to enter your router IP, Username and password manually. Normally the IP will be 192.168.0.1, the username "admin" and the password "password" or "admin".
So select your router...
And next right-click on the white space and click "Add new"
Click the "Custom" tab.
Now under name type whatever. I have "Mcrft".
Under type, set it to "TCP/UDP".
Now for the start port, type "25565" and the same for the end port.
The IP address should be auto-detected, and if it isn't, click the red icon next to it. Now click "Add".
Now click "update router", and a popup should come up and display what it's doing, whilst adding the new port to your router.
You're almost there...
Now click "Tools > Windows firewall port exceptions > add current ports list".
Under the port type "25565" and then make sure TCP is selected, and click "check port"
If all goes well:
Next check the UDP port and click Check and the same thing should be displayed. If you are presented with RED text, saying it is not open and is unreachable, you've done something wrong. Go back and make sure you've done it all right.
Next step is server config.
Go into your minecraft server folder and find the "server.properties" file. Open it with notepad and you should see:
Change "Verify-names=true" to "verify-names=false".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mod Edit: DO NOT CHANGE THIS TO FALSE UNLESS YOU CANNOT CONNECT TO YOUR SERVER AND HAVE EXHAUSTED OTHER POSSIBILITIES. SETTING THIS TO FALSE OPENS UP A VULNERABILITY FOR ACCOUNT STEALING.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leave the port.
Change the max players if you like.
Change the server name.
Change public to "false" if you don't want random people joining.
Change the motd (this is displayed when someone connects to the server).
And I dunno about the max connections so let someone else explain that to you xD
Save and close, now run "start server.bat".
Everything should load up A-OKAY. You're now ready to play with friends! But wait, one more thing you should know...
When you want someone else to join your server, give them the URL that is inside the text file "Externalurl".
This is how OTHER PEOPLE JOIN. YOU CANNOT JOIN WITH THIS URL.
You craft and mine in it!!

Click that up there!
