Hello,
I want to start my hosting company. How would I get my hands on some servers where I can sell them to people.
I also want to host some servers for my own minecraft server (play.mc-mafia.org). how would I go about doing this?
Hello contact me I can give you some of the secrets others are not willing to do here. We do not BS and I think will be very irresponsible to open a hosting company just to get a dedi's with out any experience on them at the end others will be benefiting because they will have to do your work for $ or % = here goes your profits.......send me your Skype via PM
We can offer you some advice and then you decide what to do!
I'd suggest starting a company off reselling a reputable provider's services. To make it worth the extra cost and give it your personal touch throw in personalized support and be friendly with your clients. Start small and start off selling servers to friends.

You'd give "pieces" of the server to your clients via VM software or just a control panel. The VM software (OpenVZ, Xen, etc) would allow you to allocate specific amounts of RAM/CPU/HDD space to each server. If you just use a control panel, you could only control the amount of RAM each server has explicit access to - generally, this only requires a JRE and the control panel itself to setup.
Oh, and another tip: If you didn't quite understand what I just said up there ^^ do some more research and learn more before starting up your own.
EDIT: When and if you rent a dedicated server from somebody, be sure it is at least 16GB RAM. You won't get anywhere with anything less.
We know, but he needs a dedicated server to do so. He also asks how he would get his hands on servers to sell to people, the answer = buy them. So we offered them for him to buy!
Perhaps tell him some tips on how to set it up as well?
I own some hardware on shelves in USA, if you want to start hosting we can install Multicraft onto a server and get you going. I have run companies many times and sold them for profits, I can help you setup everything you need. If we work together I will be able to get you really cheap dedicated servers. Get in touch if you're interested.
HOw would I set up a minecraft server after I buy a dedi? do you do what you do when your starting one at home???
Yes but you also need a 180$ setup fee...
When getting a dedicated server, you can install a control panel, for example multicraft, then you can easily create server using multicraft.
You can get cheap dedicated servers from a DataCenters ( E,g secured servers ) but i wont recommend starting with them as they offer them for cheap because they are unmanaged.
There are a lot of hosts that offer managed servers with $100 setup fees or less. sometimes with no setup fee.
Good luck.

You shouldn't be asking how to start your company.

Ignore everyone trying to sell their services to you in this thread. They are parasites that do not have a shred of shame.
Reselling game servers from other game server providers never ends well, do not go this route as it will likely completely screw your clients over eventually... you'd also be paying your competitors to host your servers, which makes little to no sense.
If you don't know anything about this industry - my advice to you is not to get into it. Try starting a free host, or joining another business in this industry so you can learn the trade if you are absolutely sure you want to do this.
Business plans are vital, figure this out and hire a lawyer to discuss everything prior to making the jump. It may cost a lot of money but their advice is absolutely invaluable.
I'd also suggest having at least one thousand dollars saved up before starting. If you can get your hands on more, even better.
My recommendation on where to buy your servers would be to go the colocation route if your target audience is only Minecraft. This route easily goes upwards of $25,000.00 in initial costs but if you can afford it, it'll pay itself back tenfold. If you cant or don't want to go this route, my recommendation would be to rent servers from reliable providers such as Limestone Networks, SoftLayer, GigeNet or SingleHop.
Good luck. Remember, patience is key - don't expect to get big overnight.

Thanks for a intelligent answer I will use this when I get started with my company
You only pay $80 set-up fee on our CM-D1 plan or NO set-up fee at all on our CM-D2 plan!
Why should they buy from you when they can buy direct from Hetzner Online which you are buying from.. You are making money off the setup fee you charge them and from the dedicated server each month. If you buy a dedicated server i recommend you buy DIRECT from the Data Center. E.g Hetzner Online, Phoenix Nap

PPS, Make sure you know Linux before doing anything, without knowledge of it, you are screwed.
Edit: is there a irc channel where there are people I can talk to that know everything I need?
Edit2: So basically I need to get a dedicated server... then I need to rent peices of the server to other people? how the hell to i do that

Try not to use "budget" providers, as many people here will criticize you heavily for that.

Whats wrong with asking? He wants to get advise before he puts his money in something he knows nothing about.
