Since Dinnerbone doesn't seem to be making good on his promises to fix the mess he made (huge surprise there), has anyone made (or found) a mod that just completely removes the new zombie AI? I'd love to update to 1.6.x (and eventually 1.7.x) to get all the other new features, but I refuse to deal with the new zombie crap.
I wish I knew enough java to make my own mods like this...
It's not the fact that they come in hoards where I am, but the fact that they come in hoards at the villages. I hate finding no villagers left or villages turned into zombies.
You do not need java to learn to make your own mods like this lol. You need to learn c++ which is easy.
C++, java, whatever. Unlike 90% of the younger folk that play this game, I work a full time job and don't have the time or desire to learn an entire coding language just so I can fix someone else's mistakes in one of the few games I still have time to play.
But I know there are lots of people out there with way more time than me, and that actually enjoy doing that kind of stuff (and already know the necessary languages), so I was hoping that eventually one of those people would decide to make a mod that fixes the mess.
Why can't they just realize that nerfing or buffing isn't working? We need something else other than: Damage and Health its not working. Why? Because everything else is advancing but we still have the exact same mechanics for mobs. Sure we can have mobs that wear armor but thats just basically taking the players armor mechanic and slapping it on them changing nothing else but the fact that they take less damage and have armor that the player also has, Its nothing new. Same for the weapons on Zombies all they get is better damage done to the player so we basically get Zombies that give out different damage. Have we done anything Significant? No, of course not, all they're doing is half-assing the updates to make us think were getting something different.
Yeah, well me being Bosmer I live in Greenheart, Valenwood so it will be a bit of a travel to come visit unfortunately
(Agreed but surely someone will)
I always played a Redguard myself, so Hammerfell was my home. I vote that this thread is now about pleasant locations in Tamriel.
But the forum mods probably wouldn't like that, so...

I can honestly say I didn't expect that. I am impressed. Most people just think its a funny way of spelling "elsewhere". Anyway, I do agree that we should get back on topic now.
I blame the fact that enchanting is considered to be almost required now. Everyone just has to have the most powerful enchantments that it makes them overpowered and then they complain that the game it too easy. A standard set of iron will protect you from most damage already. Sure diamonds and enchantments are nice but most people seems to think its a requirement. In pvp I could understand that but for regular mobs it's just overkill. Only time I enchant is to try to get fortune 3 on a pick or infinity on a bow (cause I'm cheep like that). And sometimes to get fire protection on a set of armor for traveling in the nether.

Given that Elsweyr is only cursorily mentioned in the more recent ES games, and hasn't actually been a place you could go to since the very first game, I would also not expect many people on here to recognize it. Arena came out in 1994, and the majority of the people that post on these forums likely hadn't even been born yet.

That's part of it. The other part is that there has been a rather vocal group of people that seem to expect awesome combat fun from Minecraft, and Dinnerbone seems to be going along with it. The game is called "MineCraft" not "Combat Sim 3000". Wanting to improve mob AI and make things more interesting is one thing. But trying to drastically change the core gameplay to necessitate constant combat (for EVERYONE, as opposed to just the arguably small subset of players that actually WANT it) was the big mistake.
The real kicker is that, based on some of the reactions I've read, even a lot of the combat-crazy people STILL don't like what he did. He really needs to admit defeat and try a different approach.

I actually had only once heard of Dune before but I recognise Elsweyr and Hammerfell as they are mentioned more frequently. Well more frequently in my 470 hours on Skyrim. I only played one Elder Scrolls and my mate got Morrowind but I could not go back to it after playing Skyrim. And I am actually born in 1996
Anyway just so these comments don't get deleted - I also don't enchant unless for a pickaxe, my xp levels get up to 150 because I do not bother enchanting. When it comes to enchanting though my friend pointed out something rather obvious but really helpful if you did not notice it.
Because it takes more xp each time you need to level up. For example 10 points level one then 15 points level two. So by the time you get to level 30 it may take 100 points and then level 50, 150 points. So it takes more points to get to 2 level 30 enchants if you wait till level 60 than if you did 2 separete level 30 enchants.
I enjoy my combat in minecraft so the horde has not really bothered me but I agree that it is all or nothing which is not good. Whilst I think the change are good they were not implemented as they should have been
I've been playing The Elder Scrolls since Morrowind. It might just be nostalga but that one has always been my favorate of the series. I've been waiting for a game to take place in Elsweyr as I find the Khajiit to be an intresting race and I'd like to learn more. If I had the chance I'd gladly like to play Arena and Daggerfall as well.
On topic:
I've never found the combat to be a major part of the game. Just something to encourage you to protect yourself and add to the survival aspect of the game. I beleve combat is fine, it's just the survival part that apears to be lacking. Build a small hut of cobblestone, get some armor and build a farm and you've survived. Perhaps making food more difficult to obtain could add some difficulty as it's very easy to get enough food to feed an army. Adding potatos just made this easier as you can just cut out a chicken farm and get some food of the same quality.

See?
This are VERY basic additions but they change the game completly.
Don't say it so loud, dinnerbones may get some ideas. Personally I too think it is way too easy to start a farm but I think making a farm more difficult to start up would again case more problems than challenge. Why not have food spoil after say 1 week unless in a sort of refrigeration chest or prepared in an newly added way (such as smoking). otherwise I think current farming is fine as it allows a player to make as big as they choose (e.g. a small personal garden or massive industrial farm). personally I think they just need to add some new enemy mobs, boss mobs, and dungeons that players could seek out if they wanted the challenge and the rewards.
Introduce a iron Grinder that is needed to get dies and bonemeal (So you have to get iron first to get bonemeal's quick food)
I think this would just get annoying. To obtain bones means you can defend yourself when a skeleton attacks. It's highly likely most players would have some armor before trying to fight a skeleton.
Make farming harder because putting 1 water and then plant seeds around is silly.
I think ALL plants should have al least 10 water blocks near to grow.
Perhaps not this extreme, but I do beleve farming needs some work. I was thinking that crops should grow much slower. If you gave them water by a watering can every day then they'd grow faster. This would mean that farms would need more attention from the player rather then just plant and forget.
Make getting charcoal harder- like you get in only by burning the log in the overworld.
I think charcoal is just fine. It's not commonly used anyway cause coal is prety dang common underground. Charcoal is more of a backup if coal isn't avalible, such as getting torches or cooking some meat before you enter your first cave.

I like this idea a lot. the question is how long is reasonably long to create the challenge without starving the poor players. (especially for players playing on hardcore starting on an island)

The issue is you CAN'T make hunger a challenge for endgame people without starving out new players. There was issues before with nerfing bonemeal horribly, and that had enough problems.
You simply can't make hunger a challenge late game and keep the rest balanced, it wont work.
I think baby zombies need to burn. And there needs to be an option for them to be able to break through blocks.

I'm curious, how would someone use c++ to mod a game that was made in java? I honestly haven't heard of a minecraft mod made using c++.
I like your Location
But at least this is easier
Yeah, it is quite an relaxing place to live. I live in Dune if you'd like to visit.
(wonders if anyone will even understand this reference)

This would make the game impossible then. You need a furnace to obtain bricks so to make a furnace you'd need a furnace in the first place.
I think this would just get annoying. To obtain bones means you can defend yourself when a skeleton attacks. It's highly likely most players would have some armor before trying to fight a skeleton.
With the ore tiers something like this would would be a bit redundant.
Now this sounds fun. A hunting mechanic in minecraft is something I've always wanted.
