Not really sure what it means. I think it has something to do with this:
(Mentioning snapshots/prereleases being part of the launcher.) https://twitter.com/...710925522472961
Does this mean Mod API? Mojang version of MultiMC? What?
I do remember reading that the modding API would come with a new launcher or something like that. So chances are good that the modding API or some form of it should be around the corner.
It doesn't matter when that tweet was. That was Jeb saying that they would need a new launcher to be able to download snashots through said launcher. The news from Mojam (there will be a new launcher) might have something to do with snapshot pushing needing a new launcher.
Using the new launcher doesn't update the version in /.minecraft, so I wonder where it keeps the files? Hopefully not on a cloud. If it's on a cloud, post-1.6 versions of the game will be wiped forever as soon as Mojang folds up, however many years from now that will be.
-Never mind. It stores the versions in /versions inside /.minecraft. All is good.
Edit: Source is the Mojam stream on http://www.humblebundle.com/, if anyone was wondering. (You were.)
Here is some newer information:
It will be self-updatable. It will allow for multiple versions, including non-vanilla JARs.

Something about the sound pack feature that was mentioned ages ago.

We will be able to opt-in to receive snapshots like we receive updates currently.

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.

Big one I remember them mentioning previously is a way to have the launcher be updated on it's own as well.
I couldn't dig that up, but I remember something along those lines as well.

November 2011?
Maybe Mojang will even give players the option to choose jar files from older versions, for mod/nostalgic purposes.

I would never have noticed because I didn't even click that link. Nice catch though. =P
