I would just like to say that I am not against the addition of horses, yet I feel like they'd have a negative impact on a certain aspect of the game if not added well. Pigs.
Pigs are a mount, and to many a worthless one; but what makes you think horses will be any different from pigs, other than the fact that you won't need a carrot on a stick to ride them? If horses are better, then pig riding will be made the less advantageous of the two, making pig riding once again just a gag and nothing more. I don't want that, and I'm sure there's at least a handful who think likewise. I think that pigs should have pros and cons, and so should horses.
An amazing idea I saw on Reddit was for pigs to be able to carry extra storage, much like a storage minecart. Horses could be used for just riding over long distances for fun or quick travel, while pigs could be used for a greater item transport ability.
This is one example of how balancing the mount scenario would work, as I see it. But if horses are added and are made to be a better mount than pigs in every way, pigs will be nothing more than a low tier of mounting that's never visited, unless you're on an SMP server and you feel like pigs would be better in a rodeo than horses. Besides, pigs are already overshadowed by cows, which I believe shouldn't be. I don't think they should be overshadowed by horses and lose their one unique ability.
If you don't want to ride horses then go ride a pig. It's as simple as that. No one is going to force you to ride a horse, but if you do get tired of walking and feeling at a disadvantage then you could always go get a pig. I'll probably have both just for the sake of making a diverse stable.
Aren't optional paths in games fun?!? You'd think so, but this community makes me have my doubts....
I think the fundamental problem isn't horses, it's the direction of Minecraft has take with adding, redundant features or useless features. The pig isn't necessarily better than the horse but mine cart tracks and nether transit are a means to travel very fast. Also the pig could be adapted to have the same capabilities as the horse and be done with transportation features. The development team is sinking large volumes of time into rather useless features or in this case features that devalue existing features like other transport options.
Mojang is like Hollywood. They can churn out recycled and cliched products/ content because the core gamer is rather unsophisticated and young and their voices are the loudest. Until the 3d survival genre exits it's Wolfenstein 3d phase and diverges into products that offer more meaningful gameplay 14 year olds come out the winner.

If done right yes. But the horse is probably going to be superior to the pig, making optional paths negatively impact gameplay and balance, and that is bad game design.

Considering the pig is more of a goof mount, no it's not bad game design. A pigs primary use is for food, just because you can ride it shouldn't make it competitive (speedwise) with a horse.
I however wouldn't be opposed to the pig having an extra feature that the horse doesn't, like small saddlebags so it could be used as a labor animal that can cart goods, or as a mining companion.

All options come at a cost. Something must be sacrificed to bring you horses. Advocates for horses must say nothing could possible be added to MC that is better than horses but would require comparable development time.

That then overlaps with chest carts. It is redundancy.
You know whats funny I have played minecraft since beta 1.4 and I have never once rode a pig. Always thought the idea was dumb. It never ruined the game or made me want to quit minecraft. Now that Horses are getting added I will differently be ridding them. So tell me how hard it is to ignore horses, Because i have done it with pig riding for two years and nothing happened to me.

And no one is going to use Pogs to carry stuff. Because they are too derpy for that if not ridden.

In all honesty I wouldn't know what else to add to Minecraft, but if they say their going to add horses then I might as well go with it. It's a feature that has been requested for a long time and at this point there's no point in trying to change their minds (if their adding horses at all). If you know of a feature that should be added over horses then by all means tell them, but I personally couldn't care what they add as long as it's free content.
Wait wait wait. Hold on guys! He's thinking about the *laughs* He's talking about the "2.0" horses! He's thinking that they are going to be adding the re-textured cows and pigs! Oh man! This is a riot!

Personally i think they Mojang should allocate their development resources on advancing the API rather than continuously delaying it.
Horse functionality is covered with nethergates and minecarts which will now become more time consuming to build relative to the horse eroding away another feature you have to work for.
I would like to for mojang to address the ease of first night experience and try to capture a more authentic survival feel. Early game is overly simplistic. Still i think too many people have too many different ideas of what MC is and those with the loudest voice don't want a survival game, they want a sandbox or Lego set. In this case i think it's best to accelerate the Mod API so minecraft can diverge into a different experience for various tastes because you will simply not be able to satisfy everybody by adding extraneous features from popular mods as many mods have tremendously conflicting philosophy resulting in no synergy and balance between them.
Having nethergates and minecarts already grants us quick transit. Having dr Zharks mod integrated dilutes that aspect making it less relevant.

I can't argue that. Mods are always a good thing.

Interesting point, though it's hard to tell what Mojang intends to do with horses (if they do anything at all)

If the Mod Api never does come around and you feel like Minecraft is missing that "rugged survival" feel then I would recommend the game Don't Starve. I'm not saying quit Minecraft, but if it isn't giving you the gameplay you expect then you have something else that meets your needs.

Honestly I'd like Dr Zhark to help make harder vanilla mobs for Minecraft over horses, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't consider it. I'm not talking about more bosses, but more basic enemy variety.
Harder vanilla mobs does sound like a good thing so i particularly like your idea.
I'm not sure the engine or modern computers could handle it but i would like to see the water mechanics adapted to become an enemy itself. A true slime which would ooze across the floor, ceiling or through defensive fortifications you attempt to build. It's main mass would like a water source block and would behave like a moving water source block that wishes to digest you.
While i would like true Finite liquid also i don't think modern computers are really ready for that.
Also, Don't Starve is awesome. I've been playing it for quite some time.
I don't mind there being horses. I actually enjoy the thought of there being more mobs. One thing that I would like to see with this is an option in the world creation area to disable certain mobs (Non-enemy mobs mostly). I know that when I'm in a good groove and suddenly a random mob is trolling my creative flow I get rather put-off by the inability to get them out of the way. Being able to toggle certain animals also could please both sides of the argument. Some will say that it gives those who use it an advantage, but if you see it as an advantage then why don't you use it?

Seriously, who uses pigs for travel? They're slow and I don't think they even jump. I don't know how horses will be implemented, but I can see them being a lot faster and being able to jump. You might have to craft horseshoes that lose durability over time to ride a horse.
I have yet to see a good argument to not have horses. "It makes MC more unique! I use pigs to travel already, no difference!" Pigs don't make MC unique. Pigs have been in games before. Animal riding has been done before. But that doesn't mean that's a bad thing. You don't even know how horses are going to be implemented. It sounds more like people who are against horses are living in the past, and don't like change to the game, even if it does make the game more fun.
Pigs on their own aren't unique. The normal minecraft player probably doesn't ride pigs. I've only ridden a pig for a total of about a minute at most. They don't do anything special. I see them as a lesser form of a cow. Find a cow, awesome, food, leather, and milk. Find a pig, eh, well at least I have food. Perhaps give another use for pigs. I mean, cows already greatly replace them now, and we don't even have horses yet. Horses aren't the problem, it's pigs being nearly useless.

Here's the line you wanna look at. I feel like I'm one of the only people here who has never even bothered riding a pig, and probably won't with a horse either. I don't care about using animals as a mode of transport, I'll always pick either running and jumping, or minecarts. The animals can help with that first one too! Why ride them when you can use their food drops to run faster for longer, with complete control?
I suggest that people simply stop protesting about things like these. This is, may I remind you all, a game which is giving you updates forever free of charge. That means when you bought Minecraft, you not only bought the version it was currently in, but all the future versions as well. Mojang didn't tell you what these updates were going to be. Even if you don't particularly like the new features, please understand that Mojang are putting in more and more of their time and work, to give you more gameplay for free. It's almost like getting handed a leaflet in the street and saying, "I don't like this leaflet. I want you to change it!".

Pigs aren't used as an efficient means for transport, it's just something silly people are bringing up to have another point to defend pigs. While running and dashing can get you far pretty fast, horses might be able to run far faster. Who knows. Only Mojang so far. If they're faster and have better controls than the awful boat, I may use them. Seriously though they need to fix boat controls..
I am not arguing against horses, I just wouldn't mind a better use for pigs.
People are allowed to be upset with updates. For example, the 1.5 update. I'm making my own texturepack right now. Ugh. I hate the new layout. It takes 10 times as long to locate anything. It's really bad. I think I should be allowed to be upset about a change like this. This is something that I can't just avoid.
That anology doesn't make sense. You are comparing something someone paid for to something someone is getting for free. If you pay for something, you should be allowed to be upset if something is changed after buying it. Though this thing people are getting upset with is horses. Why? I dunno. Afraid of new content that could make the game better. People who want to live in the past. People who want old Minecraft. Old doesn't always mean better, although it seems that way with lots of games and shows nowadays. Classic grass looked bad. There used to be thick lines on signs making them hard to read. Gravel looked terrible. Things get changed. That doesn't mean the game gets worse. Especially if it's content that you could easily avoid. Yes, I know, the "if you don't like it don't use it!" argument. I'm not good at redstone. This doesn't mean I should think redstone should be removed from the game. It doesn't make sense.
I've never used a pig before, they seem like a pain in the butt. And like I'm sure many others in this thread have already said: Who cares if the game is original, I just want it to be fun.
