Even though they are still work in process, it's still not too early to plan for uses for the new hopper block.
Let me first explain what exactly these things are.
In the first snapshot of 2013 (and 1.5), hoppers were added to the game as something to store a maximum of five stacks, or to fairly quickly transfer items into chests simply by throwing them out of ones inventory, though only if the hopper is touching the side or top of the chest (you have to hold shift while placing it so the chest isn't opened). In order to create it, there is a simple recipe that can be found here.
Your chest and hopper(s) should look something like this:
Anyway, I thought, since using lava or cacti is rather dangerous, destroying items in survival could be made easier by making a simple hole leading down to a hopper which would dispense a certain amount of practically useless or abundant items into chests, which later you could loot if you felt the need for extra dirt or cobble.
Also, there is the ability to have fully automatic mob farms and wheat farms, with no need to even be present to collect your items, as long as you have many hoppers connected up to your flowing water.
Some other uses:
•Hoppers can be used to transfer items to any other block with slots, like furnaces, brewing stands, hoppers, and trapped chests (a new type of chest which sends out a redstone signal when opened). This means it can be used to brew potions easily.
•They can be used to suck items out of containers into themselves, so you can create a long funnel to transfer items to an underground chest room, though this can be done using ender chests as well. Unfortunately, this cannot be done the other way around, which would be going up to the surface.
Have fun with the new snapshot, and comment any other hopper ideas you may have!

Fantastic ideas here, I hope we will get to see something like this in future updates. I do hate having to drop items in lava and cacti, because, like you said, it's dangerous.
I also like your idea of transferring items, rather than walking and placing items somewhere or using Chest minecarts.
"You aquaint the SURLY THUGS with your brand of diplomacy" "Everybody outta the goddamn way. You got a hat full of bomb, a fist full of penis and a head full of empty.
guys guys... you can actually use chest minecarts to transport items long distances with the assistance of hoppers for loading and unloading. a hopper can dispense items into a chest minecart, which could then travel uphill on tracks and a hopper could then unload from the chest minecart (put the chest minecart on top of the hopper using pistons) and then push the chest minecart onto another track to return and potentially do a loop. I believe this is the intended method of use (as opposed to pipes).
But what about pipes that you can branch from hoppers to link the hoppers to chests at a farther distance? That would be nice.
Not sure if this is what you mean but a horizontal and/or downward chain of hoppers will transport objects any distance. Although yeah, I think pipes would look a lot better for the middle.

"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."
That is a pretty good idea, but knowing snapshots, the game will probably crash when hoppers transfer smeltable/unsmeltable items into a furnace.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
Somebody said now all we need is pipes. I think we need a way for hoppers to sort out specific items and only pull those items out of a chest to put into another chest. This way you could just go mining, find a bunch of ores of all types, and the cart chest could ride up and distribute each ore type into it's own chest. Rather than the hopper putting them all into one chest alone.
I believe Sethbling created a device using hoppers that sorted items. And it was pretty compact too. The only dilemma is getting the items up to the surface (which can be done using storage mine carts).

Great ideas!!
What is Minecraft coming too, Awesomeness.
You can use the hoppers as pipes.

I remember being able to hook up a dispenser facing into a cauldron and shoot items into it. I loved watching them jump around inside like popcorn.
Just a though...it'd be nice if I could drop items into a caudron, and a hopper underneath would suck them up~
Edit: It's Uploaded.
Also; I've made a way to transport your items using minecarts, pistons and hoppers.
2nd Edit: Got the transport system uploaded.
I made this in 13w01a. I'll remake it with the new capacitor functions tomorrow. Good night Forum-goers.
Not really; hoppers only require a chest and 5 smooth stone. That's not difficult to acquire.

My mega long suggestion for Brewing & Farming!
It's a bit tricky though as it only works well if you drop them straight down into the center.
