First of all, all of this is opinion based, and so don't be all "Mojang is the best/worst pplz evar!"
Feel free to post your own personal opinions below.
I think that, unlike I've heard a lot of people saying, Jeb and Dinnerbone are still doing a lot of things right. I can't tell you how many PMC rants and threads I've seen dismissing the new features as "Industrial" and acting like that's a bad thing. I like pretty much all of the new features they've added recently, but I wanted to start a thread anyway.
THE GOOD: Most everything. I like the idea of hoppers, daylight det, redstone blocks, comparators, and trapped chests. The new functionality with the dispensers/droppers is really neat. From 1.4 I really liked the addition of enchanted books, invisibility and night vision potions, pumpkin pies, carrots, potatoes, and bats (Ill discuss bat's again later though.)
THE BAD: The most recent thing I can't stand is the bonemeal nerf. Bread was underpowered to begin with compared to pretty much every other food, and now it's even more so. Who approved this? Just es me off, because it throws off the game balance more, rather than making it better. I also feel that 1.4.6/1.4.7 was a terrible idea. As a modder I had to update everything, and for what? Fireworks. Woo. I am not objecting to fireworks. They are a cool feature, but the update was horribly mistimed. Made me mad. I also think that bats should drop an item (although I can't think of what they should drop), as I'm not a fan of purely aesthetic features. Other than that, I like the idea of bats.
THE UGLY: Hopper textures suck (in my opinion, and I understand there isn't much one can do with that few pixels). Witches, while a good mob idea I suppose, and well timed, have just about the worst model I've ever seen. Come on dinnerbone. We hate the testificates to begin with. Really? Oh well. Also, I dislike the change in texture for the meats. I think they looked better with the outline.
Nobody forced you to update your client/mods to 1.4.7 just for fireworks. If you didn't want them you didn't have to update.
I hate it when people complain about optional features.Don't complain about textures. You can easily modify and change those to how you like yourself. I assume you're just too lazy and won't do it.
Also, speak for yourself and not for everyone. "We hate testificates" -- No, I actually enjoy iron golem farms and villager trading.
You, good sir, have hit the nail on the head about fireworks,, bonemeal, and the witch. WHY BONEMEAL! Why not just add new foods? Fireworks, are awesome, but are too hard to make to be worth it, and and the witch needs a new texture, why not make them look more croneish?

I agree that nobody put a gun to my head, but by convention, any good modder should do it. I have texture packs, but I'm still justified in complaining about the default, seeing as it's what the game comes with. And I don't hate the concept of villagers and villages, I just hate the texture and model of the testificates.
I really do like the combat style of the witch, but it should be more common, and it shouldn't look like a gay squidward with a hat. I understand it's minecraft, but for christ's sake it's titled the "Pretty scary update." I also think that wizards that accompany witches (in towers or some other generated structure) and shoot potion-effect inducing particles that travel at like 1/3 the speed of arrows would be cool. Just wanted to throw that idea out there.
I'm fine with all the textures and the new food icons. Witches are the most eccentric mob but I don't mind them either, same as villagers. But that's just like my opinion man.
How is bread underpowered? Its the most OP food in the game. All you need is wood and some water to make it on day one. I don't even use bonemeal for that either, I use it to collect flowers.

Don't play vanilla? You don't know **** about minecraft.
I think the bonemeal nerf was needed, but I also think it should scale, like the new way it works (one per stage) should be hard, on medium it would be two stages per bonemeal, and on easy it would be three stages per bonemeal, that way you still have to wait on medium and hard for that last stage (that the bonemeal doesn't get because plants have seven stages) to grow or you can 'waste' (use bonemeal that would usually grow two/three stages) on only one stage of growth.

ragnarock200: awesome, are those things with the creeper faces pistons or furnaces

Compared to pork or steak, it's underpowered. And you have infinite melons once you get one seed... And you don't need wood (unless you mean a hoe)... You need seeds.
Bread is good for starting out, but after you have a decent chicken or cow or potato or ANYTHING farm, it's useless and underpowered.

That's a better way of doing it I suppose, rather than making it take almost a stack of bonemeal for 3 breads.
Dinnerbone already said that he didn't have time to properly balance bonemeal and will be better doing it in a future snapshot (it's probably already been done by now), which is precisely the reason that overly complaining about things that are active works in progress is just redundant and annoying.
Obligatory text in order to prevent getting a citation for posting just an image.
Seriously? Another butthurt thread about how horrible 100% optional things are? And protip: You don't have to use bonemeal to grow crops. I never do. I just walk away for 10 minutes and come back to a ton of wheat, carrots, potatos, etc.
I suggest you finish grade school and grow a backbone before going on the Internet. So you had to recompile your mod. Big whoop. It takes all of 5 minutes to do.
Wow I really think some of you have forgotten that not only is bread now harder to get but you need wheat to breed animals. Plus the nerf also makes potatoes and carrots harder to acquire ( they need four bonemeal also)

You need seeds to breed chickens. Still just as easy.

Ugh. I don't understand the whole brony thing, but I won't judge you for that. To use a meme (which obviously you are familiar with) I don't always make bread in minecraft, but when I do, I use bonemeal. It's a beginning of the game item, and I eat animal products the first day, kill skeletons the first night, and get bread the next day. That lasts me until I can get a more sustainable food source, and is one of the faster ways to start.
And it took a few hours, rather than a few minutes, because MC forge changed their file structure. And I'm a sophomore. And I'm not butthurt. As you could see if you weren't blind, I stated that these were opinions, and I gave my thoughts on the positives of what mojang has done recently as well.

Well that's comforting to hear at least. Go dinnerbone.
The 'it's 100% optional!' counterargument is completely pointless. If you're arguing that something is underpowered, it makes no sense to say 'it's completely optional!'. If someone wants to make a good thread detailing what they think is good and bad, that's fine. Optional things can be changed to be made better just as non-optional things can be changed for the better.
TL;DR: If you're not going to give a proper response, don't bother responding.
I agree with almost everything said in the main post except for the mod thing. I am a mod maker and I have some fairly large projects. Updating to 1.4.6 was really easy as are most updates. The only excuse I could think of for complaining about updating your mod would be if you are talking about 1.8 beta to 1.0.0 official release. 1.2.5 - 1.3.2 and the next one that will likely cause issues is the official mod api update. Dont get me wrong updating your mod can get annoying but every update since 1.3.2 has been a breeze.
Edit: also you make several points about things in the snapshot. Snapshots are not for you to get all worked up over. This is mojang giving us a glimpse into the future and letting us test for bugs before official release. I am sure that the mojang staff is more then capable of understanding what is overpowered.
The bonemeal discussion is rather spicy in the Recent Snapshots thread :D.I completely disagree on the witch being ugly however I do think it's too rare. As for the hopper texture let's just say that it's redstone it doesn't have to look purdy. You could always use texture packs though I have never used one lol. I mean there could be a comedy texture pack that makes the hopper look like a toilet and the dirt would look like feces.......lol
I don't think that the testifi I MEAN villager model and texture is that bad, but it is slightly creepy that they ALL have the same face (even the witches) and that they BREED IN PUBLIC . EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE SAME GENDER (well, their texture makes it look like they are the same gender).

They are hermaphroditic and reproduce by recombinational fission.
Explained:
All villagers are identical in basic physiology, but genetically slightly different (hence differing occupations, trades, etc.)
When they breed, two villagers bring their noses into brief contact in order to exchange gametes (and therefore DNA).
One of the villagers then combines this new DNA with their own in order to produce the DNA of the new villager, which rapidly develops into a state capable of surviving outside the parent and is thusly ejected, somehow fully clothed and already with a chosen profession.

Very nice.
And to OP, thank you so very much for making it clear this is an opinion thread. I see so many 'Mojang needs to/Mojang can't/Mojag shouldn't/Mojang/Mojang/Mojang' threads. +1 for being a good people.

Pork requires carrots and time to be sustainable. Same with steak but with wheat instead of carrots. Melons have one of the lowest saturation levels for food in the game. Bread is decent with hunger and saturation and doesn't require the more active commitment of having sustainable animal based food. It's also good for servers where the number of animals around to kill/farm is limited.
Personally, I always used bonemeal to make flowers. Using it on something that already grows by itself makes farming more active activity than I can bring myself to care about. Also, I like how testificates and witches look.

You raise a good point about the snapshots being merely what they are, but I have to disagree with you own the update process, at least for 1.4.7. I use forge, and it took longer than usual because someone at forge changed shiftedindex to itemID. Just was more tedious having to change a ton of variables like that.
