EDIT: Dinnerbone made a Youtube video showing the animations. Also notice how he's able to drop an entire stack without opening the inventory, seems like Shift+Q (It's actually Ctrl+Q):
Gotta get popcorn and read the inevitable rant threads claiming this kills Minecraft's "Simplicity".
You can turn it off by disabling fancy graphics. This will also work with item frames, according to Dinnerbone.
I wonder if it renders the aurora effect on enchanted items. That would be awesome. EDIT: It does. Both for dropped items, and in item frames.
This is pretty nice! I remember also using a mod that did this, and I enjoyed seeing the objects actually spinning in 3D. It's simply more pleasing to the eye.
I was originally thinking this might have a big perf impact, but item stacks merge together anyway and I doubt extruded bitmaps are much more taxing than billboards, which actually have perf issues on some OGL implementations.
And you'll be able to see items when looking straight up or down, which is definitely A Good Thing.
Remember when this was going to be a redstone update? Yeah, me too.
I remember seeing something about there being another coding split between work done for the 1.5 Redstone update and a 1.4.6 update. What's to say this won't be in 1.4.6?
Darn you. Now I have that song stuck in my head. :/
Otherwise, this isn't really a mod being added. It is an obvious step that honestly should have happened ages ago.
Saying this is stealing a mod is like saying the renderer rewrite is stealing from Optifine.
I don't think he was saying Mojang stole that mod's idea or code, or anything like that. I at least got the impression that his post was a positive one. I think he's just saying it's nice that for people who did like this or people who may have wanted it, now do not need to install the 3D items mod.

Since you seem to have forgotten, the redstone update is going to contain the rendering engine rewrite along with the redstone features. I'd file this under rendering engine improvements.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Ah, yes, I forgot about this. I guess this could go with rendering engine updates. You have to admit though, even though 1.5 was supposed to be a redstone update, there hasn't been much said about redstone since Minecon.
Wow, it makes me sad to think that one day, Mojang won't be adding stuff to the game. The game will be complete someday, at least on their part. While there will always be new mods, it's just not the same as additions Mojang makes to vanilla. All this "cleaning up the game" has me wondering if we're inching closer to that point...i KNOW for a fact MOD API will get us closer to Mojang's completion...the mod community will be able to answer requests by the community much quicker than Mojang is able to..
I'm hoping that some of the items (e.g. swords) have physics and sound effects to them. Would be pretty awesome.
Quote from Kholdstare »
Walking through the depths of the cave, you spot a large vein of iron across the room. Gleefully reaching for your pickaxe, you sprint towards the nuggets of hematite embedded in to the wall... but a horrific sight makes you skid to a halt. You were not, in fact, alone in the room after all; a band of three zombies emerges from the shadows, the one in the back brandishing a sword. Fortunately, you have a sword of your own. Quickly drawing it from it's sheathe, you run up and slice the unarmed zombies across the face (the armed one is too far away) but to your dismay, you barely make one cut before the stone blade flies across the room and hits the wall with a dull thud, shattering; only a stick is left in your hands. Had you been a better craftsman, you might have been able to slay them easily, so you turn to run... but a faint glimmer catches your eye. The sword that the zombie wields is made out of glistening diamond, glittering faintly in the light of the lava. You had never even seen a diamond before, much less a sword made from one. You gape in awe at your potential prize before a sudden jolt of pain throws you headfirst in to reality. You punch the zombie that bit your face away and back up to survey the situation; fortunately for you, a pool of lava is nearby, and with a swift kick you send one of the zombies tumbling in to the rumbling fluid. Having no other weapons, you ready your pickaxe and whack the zombie in the head repeatedly, though in your rage he manages to scratch you before returning to dust once again. All that is left is you and the sword wielding zombie.
You ready your pick once again and charge down the zombie, hoping to cleave his head off in one below. The zombie is a better warrior than you had anticipated; he sidesteps your blow easily and drives the point of the sword directly in to your stomach, stabbing clean through. In pain, your knees give mid-run and you skid across the ground, scraping your side as you slow down until you finally halt at the edge of a magma pool. The zombie closes the distance with ease and raises the sword high above his head for a killing blow...
...but wait! You aren't finished yet! With your remaining strength, you kick him off his legs so that he lands on the floor next to you and stand up yourself. You aim your pick directly at his head, but he still manages to block anyway. You strike again, this time at his sword arm, but he blocks anyway. The third time, you aim for his chest... your pick is blocked yet again, but the zombie failed to anticipate your foot flying directly at him! In shock, the zombie lets go of the sword (which clatters to the floor just over the edge of the pool) and flies directly in to the center of the magma pool, dying in seconds. His sword, engraved with the finest enchantment runes and decorated with the finest emeralds, is now yours to keep.
If only Minecraft combat was actually like that, but who cares? (Me.) It'd be epic all the same.

It's not stolen from a mod, Mojang could've implemented this the day items were 3D in your hands.
I was originally thinking this might have a big perf impact, but item stacks merge together anyway and I doubt extruded bitmaps are much more taxing than billboards, which actually have perf issues on some OGL implementations.

To what detriment, sir.

Dinnerbone is working on minecraft 1.4.6, not the redstone update. The update is so that users can have fireworks at the end of this year.
