I don't like redstone. I only mine it for XP, redstone lamps, and to trade it to those who do use it. This update won't do anything for me, unless they add a few non-redstone related features (Maybe the Red dragon?)
I'm not sure I like what they're going for. The thing is that they're trying to fix "bugs" that are pretty much features or properties of what we're working with. This basically undermines a lot of hours spent using and exploiting these bugs and ruins a lot of work spent.
I don't think there's much wrong with red stone as it is, perhaps they should add a few new inputs and outputs but I don't think I'm gonna like what they're adding anymore than if they added craft able logic gates.
Except for adding jungles and hill-type biomes in 1.2 back in March and more tweaks in 1.3 in August. Which were less than a year ago. "Over a year ago" would mean back in the Beta 1.8 days.
I don't see anything wrong with the terrain EXCEPT after the 1.2 upgrade when the generator was majorly changed to add in Jungle biomes, so you get harsh borders because the old seed produces different biomes when exploring new chunks.
Notice how I said improvements. Jungles are one of the better biomes (vegetation, hills, and water all in one biome) but after a while those too get repetitive. I can't stand them now because there is always far too much vegetation, even if it is fun at times to explore the jungle in the canopy rather than the ground. Adding X-hills was a cheap attempt to re-add the illusion of height variation and only managed to produce random bumps in the ground in an otherwise-flat landscape (except for IM and Jungle Hills which had a better form than the others, but IM is just a snowy EH and JH tends to look repetitive as well).
I agree that the terrain generation could be vastly improved. But I also don't think that pre-1.8 terrain was better in any way. The randomness it presented was nice in a first glance, but it was also the factor that made everything "the same", after all the number of variables used in it's randomness was very limited.
The presence of biomes was a step in the right direction IMO. But again the randomness within every biome, and between biomes itself is also very limited. So after beta we ended up with (a few) small different islands of "the same" stuff.
Why it's randomness must be so limited? That is what should be worked on (after the bugfixes of course).
All the variables used in the random factor inside each biome should also be extended (with a chance) to be applied to all other biomes, with the only limitations being the logical aspects like temperature and height.
With the current biome generation we cannot have forests in extreme hills (x-hills). We cannot have x-hills overhanging/crossing other biomes. No x-hilly taigas or deserts. (maybe I'm mistaken on one of these, but my point stands).
Anyone who watches a video of Biomes O' Plenty will understand what I'm talking about. Now add to all those biomes an increased chance of randomness (taking features of other biomes) and you will have a genuinely interesting world.
First of all: X-hills does not refer to Extreme Hills but rather to the technical "hills" biomes. Things like "jungle hills" and "forest hills". EH refers to extreme hills. You will still see hills in taigas and deserts, but those are formed by X-hills rather than height variation, and they also aren't mountainous.
While the old generator did have it's flaws, they weren't as numerous as the current one's flaws. But it doesn't really matter, since we don't want the old generator.
That aside, an update focused on redstone IMO isn't the greatest idea anyway. Sure, it'll be good for those who use redstone, but there are still plenty of people who don't use redstone or care for redstone. It's fairly easy to get by without redstone (though you might not have as much fun). On the other hand, you inevitably HAVE to experience the terrain unless you only ever play on a friend's computer who has mods that alter the terrain. If you like the way the terrain looks? Good for you; you might like a different generator better, but you can still have fun with the current one. If you don't like the way the new terrain looks? You're screwed unless you install mods since every place looks the same. At least you can avoid redstone.
Guys. Remember when boosters were the only viable way to travel via rail? Then that bug was fixed and replaced with an actual item.
The BUD switch is just as useful, however right now it relies on laggy glitchy redstone. We NEED to fix these things, no one said the BUD was being removed, infact the devs want to keep it in because of its use. Just expect an actual block instead.
I still don't understand why people are so hot headed about terrain. It has already been stated that it will be worked on eventually. There are just more important things to do (yes redstone is important, along with you know.. rendering, lighting, and various other bits). Not to mention that whenever the generator is touched the other half of the community freaks out because of hideous chunk borders.

Don't play vanilla? You don't know **** about minecraft.
Ohh...redstone block, i could go for that. a compact way to store redstone in chests and (hopefully) a new and interesting way to power blocks in a way similar to redstone wire.
I'm also loving the 'allocator', capacitor and light sensor. I love the idea of new sensors and input devices, and just don't like the idea of dumbing down the way that the information is processed - by addling logic gates blocks, ect.
Yes, redstone blocks would be amazing. With those, you could power entire walls, ceilings and evens floors with little effort.

That seems interesting. I am barely learning the basics of redstone but I feel that it would be easier if they let the redstone be trailed vertically up a block instead of having them go in a diagonal zig zag motion to reach up, but that is just my opinion.
I decided to buy it with my money, then they ruined a much-liked feature. Sure, it has improved... slightly. But exploration is a reason many people bought the game, then found out that 1.8 changed the generator in to one that ruined exploration.
I don't care if they recently fixed bugs. Yes, it's good that they fixed bugs. However, Mojang has had PLENTY of opportunities to fix the problem. It has, after all, been a year since they ruined it in the first place. It's almost absurd that they haven't done anything until now about it. Then comes 1.5. While they COULD appease the millions of fans that want a new terrain generator, on the other hand. they could (and will) also work on redstone which isn't nearly used as often and can, in fact, be avoided fairly easily and isn't necessary at all for enjoyment.
Mojang's primary concern should be terrain; they've kept a large portion of their fanbase without decent terrain for ages, yet only recently have I seen people clamoring for redstone. Might as well, you know, appease the millions of players who actually WANT something instead of appeasing a smaller portion who doesn't want something as badly as a different group does. And the funny thing is, they won't hurt anyone; you'll still find EH-like places if you like EH. You will, however, find a vastly larger amount of things that are impossible to find in the new generator.
So, before you tell someone to "be thankful that Mojang fixed over 120 bugs", know what the hell you are actually talking about. Yes, Mojang has recently fixed a lot of bugs. No, it did not take an entire year with all of Mojang's resources being used on 120 bugs. There was plenty of time to fix this mess, and yet it was not utilized. And it still isn't being utilized.
I never was patient enough to figure out the bud switch, although I think I understand what it does.
If it's removed then why doesnt he do this.
Make a literal redstone block, you take 4 or 9 redstone to make 1 redstone block. You place the redstone block directly where your bud switch would be. Then when that block is updated (say the furnace turns off) it glows like redstone, activating any redstone connected to it.
That's just one example. You could make auto emptying furnaces without a big mess. One block update sensitive redstone black is all we would need, maybe even be touch sensitive like normal redstone ore.
Before I tested it I actualy thought a redstone ore would activate nearby redstone wire when it glowed.
As for the terrain complaints... They are working on custom terrain so you can customize it. That way if you don't like default terrain then you can make your own. You can even prevent trees from spawning if you want to.
Seems the only thing I'm looking forward to in 1.5 is the devices that suck up items and transport them. I'll be able to enhance my mob grinder (based on gravity) to kill mobs and no more need to have water currents at the bottom (which seem to cause some mobs to survive the fall) in order to pull items into a collecting room. Mobs will fall, die, and their loot will get sucked up and transported into a box.
The only thing I have ever used a BUD switch for is making my towns lights come on at night , and turn off in the daytime . But they do have other uses I suppose...If they change it into an actual block and or include light sensors of some type , instead of my 5x7x5 pit that has a piston , water and a glass block on top to let the light pass thru...I wouldn't compain at all .

Solar panels and capacitors mah friend. They are adding them

Well that's stupid.
Now the only thing that slabs are useful for is decoration.
Looking forward to the first snapshot coming out today! (it's Thursday right now in my time zone)
I haven't read anything about snapshots being on the way already. Considering 1.5 consists of a render rewrite, I wouldn't get your hopes up if I were you.
Redstone update with a red dragon....
This gives a whole new meaning for a red dragon.

So again, what is a BUD switch even used for?
Automatic farming is a popular one. But traps and various other things.
