I'm not one to install snapshots--as cool as they can be (and as buggy actual updates can be) I'd rather take my chance with the actual updates.
That being said, has anyone toyed around with carrots and potatoes yet? I have a farm and I would like to set up land for them ahead of time, and I was wondering if they need to be next to water to grow most efficiently like wheat and sugarcane, or if they have different needs (or none at all.) I checked the wiki and there's not much information up yet.
And yes, I know this is all subject to change, but any insight would be appreciated.
The only thing I've noticed is that they both take four stages to grow completely, and that when you harvest potatoes they have a chance to drop poisonous potatoes along with the regular ones.

Except they're also like Nether wart, because they don't drop any seeds. You just put a carrot or a potato back in the ground and it starts growing again.

Actually there is something different. Without water, potatoes and carrots will pop out eventually. They require water to grow, unlike wheat, which can grow slowly without water.
Or at least that is what I've seen. (And yes, light levels were at 12+)

Potatoes/Carrots = Wheat
I am ninja'd far too often.
Really? Haven't seen that...
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

So you can eat wheat now? Good to know.
