I don't even see Mojang doing what every other developer/publisher does. It's the whole "minecraft" style system that rolls out updates after updates when you initially buy the game once and only once. I personally think this was their key to success, once they eliminate that they'd got a game that won't be updated for free and players gradually losing that drive to play and play. Money isn't grown on trees, and therefor no one will pay for an expansion every 3-6 months.
I wouldn't buy it off morale grounds as-well, I played Minecraft when it was in Alpha, I saw it progress and stay with the game ip that I really enjoyed. I guess I just really like blocky . If they "revamp" the game then cool, let others enjoy it, I'll be here with the game I bought.
Last thing; mods exist and oh boy we have programmers/coders here that can makes standalone games if they really wanted to. Why pay for something when you could get a free version of it? ; p
When Beta was release ready the terms of purchase were changed, excluding free expansions and addons. Originally this also included all updates after the full release, but we all know how that turned out.
Well, drats! I was still playing a cracked client back in Alpha. :/
(Don't judge me. There was no demo version back then!)
Ah well. Just like Spore, Empire at War, Zoo Tycoon 2, and all other expansion-based games I've played, someone will take the expansions, package them as a mod, and I'll get them for free. :/
Thanks for finding that post for me.

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
I'm wondering why all of you go all "No! No! No!" without even thinking of what an expansion to the game actually would contain. To me, it depends on what I get, but I'll get it for free anyway 'cause I'm Alpha.
I wouldn't really expect our beloved Mojangsters to start shipping out overpriced content for extra dosh, though. This ain't CoD.
Okay. People who are garunteed free expansions can officially shut their yaps on this issue. They are not even remotely effected by it, and as such cannot honestly evaluate the situation.
Here's how modern "expensions" in games work:
The 1.5 Expansion! New modding API! New redstone features! New rendering system! All for only $9.99!
The 1.6 Expansion! The Ocean Update! New Mobs! New Items! All for only $9.99!
The 1.7 Expansion! The Villager Update! New functionality for villagers! Quests! Conversations! All for only $14.99!
Oh. And don't forget that if a server uses an expansion, you have to buy it too!
Yes. I'll pass.

Probably not. Unless the updates are really cheep (less than $1) I doubt I'd be willing to buy them. I've got quite a few games on my Steam account I've never played because I bought them on sale for when I got "bored with Minecraft."
If they found a really good reason to add an expansion for an extra fee I wouldn't hesitate getting it. I really do not see it happening but if they did I would of course purchase it.

A modded looking for dedicated (at least consistent) texture artists/modelers to make magic with! Not literally magic...but...mods! PM me...
What I like about Minecraft is that you can get everything for the price of one. Plus, the downside is that people can make exact mods of the DLC and give it for free.
Yeah, if for instance, Minecraft 2 had to be purchased, I'd just download and install Minecraft 2: The mod.
Part of the appeal of MC, imho, is that it is free after the first purchase. All updates are free. I can't really complain about free updates. And I really can't complain about bad parts of updates that could be canceled with a mod. (Sound packs, etc.)
Minecraft should always be a (in my case) $30 purchase. Which makes it much better than, say, WoW, which has to be renewed every month. Which isn't really so good of a deal.
First, Mojang has never done this before, and often cites this as an example of what separates them from other developers - they give you free content during the ENTIRE LIFETIME of the game's development cycle just for a relatively small up-front price. They're not going to change that any time soon.
Second, Mojang has an open, lax policy regarding piracy - if anything they support it more often than not, with Notch even leaking the Beta 1.9 prereleases. Someone would just find a way around it as they always have since video games have existed. Moreover, the community at large would either become irate (killing business) or just crank out mods that do the same thing (rendering the point of charging for updates moot, and hurting the company's reputation to boot). So far as I know, once Minecraft sees a final, FINAL release (which I shall refer to as "2.0", regardless of its actual version number), Mojang plans to just put it up for download for free and leave content development in the hands of the community. Again, I don't know that last bit for certain, but it's what I'm going with.
If they made us pay for expansions, they would have to be a lot more professional with them, content/bug wise. 1.4 was fine, it had some cool new stuff (a bunch of new bugs) but over all it really didn't add much that people would pay for, now, if they were to do the stuff that cadika suggested, and do it well (as in, really well) then they might be able to charge for it, but they would have to make really good stuff, and make it work really well.

Nah, it should always be a 27$.
I could barely buy Minecraft.
Keep on derpin'
Regardless, I would never pay for an expansion.
