Not every new feature has to be an upgrade. Dyed armor looks and sounds awesome even though it isnt stronger than regular leather armor. Just roll with it.
This will also be good for server PVP matches, to differentiate teams. Overall, I like this feature. A lot. I hope there's more items that you can dye with 0xFFFFFF colors in the future.
hmm still think we should be able to paint all of our armor idk about anyone else but i never use leather armor becuase it doesn't give much protection.
Cool, they really are churning out the changes to the new version. Can't wait for a snapshot to try it out.
I imagine the reason for not using the existing colours is simple: it's actually easier this way. With the dyed method, they would need to add a new item and new armor object for each colour of leather armour. This way, the colour can just be a tag on the armor item itself and coloured appropriately by the renderer based on that information.
Another interesting thing that could be added (but might be seen as "copying" terraria) is the use of visual and functional armor as "separate"; in Terraria you can visibly wear a top hat and suit, for example, but functionally you are protected by say hallowed or adamantite armour. The disadvantage to this with MC is that you won't be able to tell at a glance what a player has. Do they have leather armour or are they really wearing enchanted diamond armour? etc. But I'm sure there would be some way to mitigate this.
Also: I can't seem to find a source for this... (reddit?)
So that in games like this:
With dye-able armor they can have different colored armor without giving one team an advantage (Sethbling used gold and chainmail since they are pretty much the same protection, but of course you couldn't get chainmail if you were doing a game like this in survival servers)
+ if you don't want to lose a lot of your protection, use iron chestplate, leggings, and boots and just get a leather armor to dye the color of your faction!

EDIT: For colored wool, there are only sixteen colors. So, the different colors are all separate textures in the .png file. Ingame, these textures are stored as additional data for the single block. Similarly, the colored armor would be stored as additional data for each of the four armor items, respectively. However, since the entire hex color palette is used, instead of only sixteen colors, they are probably stored in a different way, and I seriously doubt that they would appear in the .png file.
I think it looks pretty snazzy, I think it was made mainly for decoration. Plus, you can finally look pretty ninja by making block armor. And make lapis armor(in a way)
Dyeing leather armor is great since dye is pretty much useless in survival. Unless your making a flag, then you don't need to dye wool really. But you can dye leather armor for pvp and for camo!

Nah, it's still useless in regards to survival. Camouflage is ineffective, and it doesn't help that this snapshot also adds invisibility.

I progress from...
No armor > Leather Armor (I will only craft and wear full sets to cut down on material loss) > Diamond Armor
Not everyone uses Iron, and this will give us non-iron users something nifty to mess around with.

Someone answer me, I am curious!
*Minecraft Wiki doesn't tell me!
The colored armor uses a hex color palette.

I am ninja'd far too often.
