That is true, the beacon should be easier to make. After killing the Wither, you have to collect thousands of minerals just to have a little pyramid that heals you. It should be made of obsidian or something, because right now the only beacon anyone would even think about getting is a size 1 made of iron, and that one only gives Haste.

I do disagree with some of your points, IE I do not think it should come fully powered. However, it would be more balanced if it had maybe more effects (either through in-game, or even some through NBT editing or something, eh Dinnerbone?). I think it should have varying effects depending on what is used. IE, the level of the effects, IE Iron be Haste I, Gold be Haste II, Diamond be Haste III, Emerald be Haste IV. And mixing blocks could add varying points to a total value which could determine the level of the effect. Give Jeb time, he may yet do something fantastic.
If this gets added, make Emerald only get Resistance III. Players would be invincible.

This is such a stupid argument; is it really so bad that people would like to see this interesting new feature changed so it isn't horrendously broken?

I guess they should never work on monsters again. I mean hey, they're optional? They should also never work on survival mode again, it's optional right?

I normally would agree with you, but this thread isn't one of those threads. It's actually explaining why they could use a little work. He isn't slandering Mojang, and he isn't whining that we have beacon blocks. Rather, he is suggesting creative ways to improve upon the current design. While some of his points are flawed, this is a tolerable thread in that it's respectful and constructive.
I have a radical suggestion that will not get good feedback. They should remove the beacon that comes out of the blocks. Or atleast give you the option to turn it off. Why? So it can be hid more easily for adventure maps.

This block is not meant for adventure mode, and most people really like the beacon. I do think they should be made into separate blocks, because it's strange that the beacon block needs to be open to the sky to work, and using the beacon just for the beam is a lot of work just for a beam of light.

Fair enough. Although, you can see the usefulness of negative effects on the beacon for map makers. I'm not saying this HAS to be in the game, just that it would be nice. Who knows, Dinnerbone may have already snuck in such a thing. Nobody notices those things; It's always Dinnerbone who tells someone. In the case of player heads, he made a reddit thread. In the case of the new potion NBT stuff, he told Sethbling. Get my drift? For instance, snow golems can 'theoretically' wear those fancy player heads. Just haven't figured out how to change their 'helmet' yet, which is currently a pumpkin.
Actually, you know what I'd like even more than negative effects being available to beacons? A new command that allows you to apply potion effects to players, that can be used with command blocks. Not only is this far more flexible for map makers, and easier to use, but it doesn't come with the drawbacks of the beacon (ie. the beam, needing to be exposed to the sky, etc.). Map makers can hook it up to a clock to replicate the effects of the beacon, and they can even specify their own area of effect using the new stuff Dinnerbone added for command blocks.
Syntax could be:
Alternatives to "potion" could be: effect, applyeffect, potioneffect, or applypotioneffect.
For example, the map maker wants to apply a hunger effect within a certain radius of his 'evil temple'. He set up a 4 second redstone clock hooked up to a command block that executes the following command:
/potion @a[x=201,y=64,z=-375,r=40,m=2] hunger 1 8
This means that the command blocks will apply an 8 second, level 1 hunger effect every 4 seconds (every time the clock pulses) to all players in adventure mode (so that he isn't annoyed by the particles while building the map) within 40 blocks of the coordinates 201,64,-375 (the location of the centre of his evil temple).
I believe this is a far more flexible, useful and elegant solution than negative beacons for adventure map makers.

I'm just going to pop into this thread to say that skilled mapmakers already know how to make both splash potion spawners AND negative effect beacons.
That's right, you already CAN do that.

Wait, but how have they done the negative beacons? Assuming the beacon you're referring to is actually the beacon block. Anything other than NBT editing is definitely modding (or rather more difficult modding, if you want to consider NBT editing modding, I don't), and not everybody wants to have to mod to do something small like that, when NBT editing would be trivial to implement and use.

It's done through NBT editing. Beacons work by having two tags with potion effect IDs in them. If the tags are the same, it gives level II of the effect. If the tags are different, they give separate effects. You can actually use any effect.

Well, that's fantastic then. Thanks for sharing that bit of information. So maybe they could give some kind of benefit for using different kind of resource blocks. Right now the only reason anyone would use something other than gold or iron would be to show off. Even the material sacrificed doesn't change anything. Why would someone use a diamond, when they could just sacrifice an iron ingot?
To improve the beacon block, they shouldn't make its effect ranged, it should be permanent until you either cancel it or change it to another one. I mean... considering the work that goes into it...

Yeah, I thought you might be able to do that already. I still think that applying potions effects via commands would be a useful thing to be able to do.
I could see the beacon being useful in some PvP maps. However I agree that they are impractical during regular gameplay with the high cost to create and use.

Finnaly somone who agrees needing thousands of Iron to get a slight boost is ridiculas.
