I'm glad Notch and Minecraft have decided to make another move. It sounds like it's for the better. (:
It's extremely important to remember that notch has NOTHING to do with these forums or the wiki. He simply reads them. We are not owned, and have never been owned by Mojang.

Always loved the Curse Client, if they can figure out a way to help us manage our Client side& Server side mods, that would be the just the Bee's Knees.
I think the server haven't switched yet, and with the announcement a lot of Curse folk would come and look what we're up to. More traffic equals more load equals PAIN.
This is correct. We, the community, think that curse is going to attract more to MC and increase the amounts of "noobs" and "griefers."
Look at roblox, started nice, got ads, sacrificed itself to money, and ruined play value.
I, for one, have never heard of Curse before today, and you know, I'm skeptical.
I noticed something was up when I saw the links down the bottom of the page to websites I have no interest in and games I have never played. (I notice 'Evony' is on there, heightening my suspicion) And I have never had good experiences with a fan portal.
I don't think I want those people on my forum. As Sarbinger said, likely this partnership will attract the wrong kind of people. We already have enough noobs and trolls around here, and I don't think that anyone silly enough to play Evony is going to be a constructive member. And our server is already frequently under heavy load, this will just result in more down time until these supposed new servers get up.
I do find it strange that this group which supposedly works with fansites has entered into contract with the official forum. I don't see this as a good deal for anyone.
Furthermore, I note someone has brought up advertising. While, as a user of an adblock service, I have not seen online adverts for YEARS, I do find it mildly annoying that this contract has somehow resulted in extra advertising. I don't see why. Especially since we already have enough adverts for Curse right now.
Regarding some 'premium' thing. I already notice that a number of forum sponsors seem to be a bit high and mighty and not particularly nice people. As it is, I would be happy to pay to support the forum were it not for these people giving them a bad name. Adding extra, premium content will only heighten the elitism and cause ostracising of those new, young members, of which we already have many. If I ever have to pay to enter restricted parts of this forum which should not even be there, I will be leaving. While I can understand (maybe) on sites like Subeta which provide a free service, Minecraft is a game which you must pay to play. Even though it's only once-off, it still requires payment to get the full game and is much more convenient. I don't see why we should have to pay more to get the full forum experience too, especially if Notch himself has nothing to do with this forum. I just assumed that since this is the official forum, he would.
Nonetheless, while I don't think this is a step in the right direction, I may as well keep my mouth shut until this actually has a noticable impact on the forum, instead of complaining about some text I won't see half the time.

Ugh, I'm sorry, but I really hate the portal links. I see it every time I scroll down to click the Post Reply button or on the 'Information: Your post has been sucessfully posted' page. I really don't want to be reminded that it's there.
Also, I agree wholeheartedly with Turtleey, although I mostly associate the WoW community with older men like my cousin-in-law who are actually mature.
Also, when will the search function be back up? I'm the sort who obsessively clicks 'View my posts' to see replies to the topics I'm interested in, and I don't want to browse through twenty pages of board just to see them. I don't see why we're punishing everyone for the bad deeds of a few.
It's back up, thanks.

This bit of the community doesn't think that.
We've already got more than our fair share of noobs and griefers. I don't think any more will really shift the balance. More traffic = more pain? The servers already fail on a regular basis so what is there to lose? Curse's servers have to be more robust than what we currently have. More traffic = more people who know about MC = potentially more sales for Notch.
I don't see any realistic downsides to this but I do see potential up sides. It seems like a good plan to me and it seems like the people who made the decision did so from an informed position.
Like making the announcement and installing the ads prior to moving to the more robust servers. Awesome planning.
As an ex World of Warcraft player who relied heavily on Curse for news and addons I very much approve of this move.
Also as a respected officer of a mature, friendly social guild on WoW full of normal, hard working people (of which I will be returning to come Cataclysm) I do take offense to the 12-year old asshat stereotyping.

This is exactly where the problem lies. You seem to think we should all play peaceful or hard mode. Well to tell you the truth, your definition of a challenge is not the same as mine. There IS a middle ground which many players fit into.
Like making the announcement and installing the ads prior to moving to the more robust servers. Awesome planning.
That's like buying a lawn mower before you have a lawn. First things first.
Uh, yeah, we call it planning ahead. I did buy a lawnmower before I bought my first house, when they went on clearance in the winter, knowing I was buying a house in the spring and lawns require weekly mowing (here anyway, maybe it's different where you live), instead of buying the house, then going "Oh crap! I need a lawnmower or hire someone to do it!" and paying for it.
There's no reason, besides greed, that you couldn't have prepared the servers and then made the announcement. Something like "Hey! We're moving to better servers! Welcome to Curse! We're going down for 5 minutes to switch."
Damnit. You guys sold out. This must explain the giant ad banners. I also checked out curse's privacy policy, and what did I find? They never said they keep your information private, and, in fact, they even stated that they share your information with third party advertisers. They will slowly, but surely, take over this forum and shape it into whatever they want. As soon as the chance comes up, become independent again. Curse WILL become the wikia of forums. Look forward to this place covered in ads, the “you are now leaving” ad, and the “too often to be random” full page ad.

Minecraft is a cube.
They will add spheres.
I don't like the way this is going, these guys are going to send us spam now, Notch, Markus, please, PLEASE! Get rid of these men. Oh and get NoScript, easy to use and blocks adverts!

From what I see, I believe that this is actually a bad idea. We do get the occational bot, and the rare infected file, but adding a giant community that is most likely riddled with bots, trolls, pricks, and people who LOVE to infect other people's computers to grow their vast bot army... It is a bad move, simply enough. Not to mention all of the people who have great expectations for the game, only to find it not even coming close...
Metaphorically, you are letting someone to renovate your house, and find that once he was done, he copied your house key, and took the place for himself.

You'll never get anything malicious from curse, and it isn't necessarily going to become minecraft player's source for mods anyways. Also, curse doesn't sweep in and change the sites that become part of their network the way you might think they would.
Don't worry about it, things will only go uphill from here.
I see alot of uninformed people posting in here, so I figured I'd clarify some things.
First of all, WE (citricsquid, aera, and I) are still very much in control of the wiki and forums. We have signed contracts with Curse that keep us here for quite some time. Curse is actually not even interested in running the site, and made sure that we were okay with continuing to support the sites.
Secondly. WE ARE NOT OWNED OR OPERATED BY MOJANG OR NOTCH.
The forums and wiki are fan/community operated. In fact, we have little contact if any with Notch or his staff. This has nothing to do with the actual game, and curse will not own Minecraft or the game. ONLY the sites http://www.minecraftforum.net/ and http://www.minecraftwiki.net/.
Third. Ads. We currently serve 66m pageviews PER MONTH. On the 31st of October (boo update) we did 5.5m in a single day. It is NOT cheap to run these sites. It costs us $2,300 USD JUST for servers, each month. On top of that, we have 3 people doing almost full time work on these sites. Because we are not employed by Mojang, we do not receive any income from mojang. We have to pay for these ourselves. Moving to curse removes this burden from us and puts it on them. I would urge you to find another website that does as much traffic as us, and has no funding that DOESN'T have ads.
It seems that most complaints come from people who have no dealing with Curse. The people who have dealt with them (by and large) have only good things to say.
This deal was not made on a whim. We've been in talks with them for over a month, discussing and negotiating exactly how this would pan out. The top concern has, and always will be, the community.
Also, for the skeptics, here's a logical way of looking at it. Curse makes money by the ads on this site. If people don't view the ads by not coming here, then they loose money. It is financially beneficial for them to keep the community happy.

The forums were crumbling. 502 and 504 errors are common, quite often the search function needs to be disabled, creepers keep finding the server, something needed to be done. This is something. It's a sensible rescue plan from a big company with the infrastructure to support the Minecraft and do so with ease. The current system hasn't been working and it was unlikely to get better.
Yes, it may come with aspects people don't like but personally I'd rather have working forums with adverts (that I won't see anyway, thanks ABP) than forums that crash and burn every time there is a Minecraft update. Weighing up the pros and potential cons, I see this being a good move overall.
This. It's not like we can get any lower quality of idiot than we have currently anyway. Though I would like to see more moderators on here for the sheer numbers of people we get even now. If we're going to get an influx of new forum folks then mod numbers need to be beefed up a bit to handle any extra spamination and flamage. I feel the small number of mods is about my only major issue with any of this, and it's only tangentally related to moving to Curse.
