idk what everyones smp problems are..I run a craftbukkit server with several mods...and bukkit+ mods had a stable, working release 7 hours after the patch dropped.
Maybe you should consider uploading older versions. There is no harm in it, the game is unplayable without an account (or crack). And by baning users for sharing the older version on your forums you will only send them to other download sites like piratebay and such that actually let you download the cracked version so you dont even have to pay for an account.
I never made a backup of the resources folder, and I accidentally deleted it, urg..... also, when I log in to the launcher, the minecraft-size window pops up, black, then closes automatically, without even showing the mojang logo, is that a result of the resources folder thing or what?

backup your saves and then delete the .minecraft folder entirely... run the launcher..then put your save folder back

For the record the DMCA is an american law and only applies to americans. I'm not condoning or supporting anything illegal, just clarifying. This is a swedish game with players from around the world with many deifferent sets of law, some without much at all.
I mention this because I am not american and do not like having someone try to apply american law to me.
@Nomadicstorm, the server is in the United States, so the forum is under United States law.
For clarification purposes. It's not illegal even in the usa to provide a link to a file. It's illegal to host that file. If they are providing the files and they live in the usa or the files are on a server in the usa, they the USA has jurisdiction, and it is illegal
For the record I detest filesharers. Pay your way through life or GTFO. Minecraft, for the amount of time I've played has cost me pennies per hour for my entertainment. The illegal players should just pay up. Those who can't get it to work on their systems get to learn a valuable lesson about backups. It's not like they didn't know the update was coming early enough.
Well, you can't blame citricsquid or any other staff member for this stuff. It is simply against the law to do that kind of stuff stated above.
It is copyright violation to play the game without paying for it. It is against the forum rules (NOT illegal) to post older versions here.
HUGE difference
it IS illegal to distribute a copyrighted program that is not your property. buying Minecraft does NOT mean you own it, it means you are licensed to USE it. and don't give me crap about it being a U.S. law..because it's not. it is an INTERNATIONAL law. that is the reason games aren't available to be sold in some countries, because they refuse to abide by said international laws. if Mojang so wished to do so they can sue anyone who redistributes Minecraft.
It's not an international law. NOT. Many countries of signed various copyright, intellectual property , etc treaties. But that does not mean they implemented them. Laws are specific to a country. Not all countries have robust copyright laws. Some don't have any. NONE. Some have a few old and outdated laws. Some have authouritarian regimes for copyprotection etc that other countries think are draconian and too extreme to implement in their own countries.
Do not apply your american expectations of what 'should be' to other countries that do not agree.
It IS against the EULA you agreed to, so at the very least you're guilty of breach of contract if you do host the files. How serious is that really?
well, probably not very but still, you said you wouldn't, even if you didn't realize it. lol but they should definitely host previous versions.

Keep looking for reasons to hate Americans and assume you have the right to speak for entire countries. And yes..you are damned right I am going to apply my American expectation that people get properly paid for their work and their products. I don't care what country you are from, if you can't agree to the fact that my expectation "should be", you are in fact wrong.
Either way it's a completely moot point as notch is the one that made the EULA that states not to distribute the game..it also states if there are any legal questions feel free to ask notch.. and I can guarantee he will tell you that distribution of the game is in fact a punishable offense whether by lawsuit or fines from "insert country here"'s laws because it is his i.p. and his product. Now be a good boy and go be condescending somewhere else.
I really do feel like this is a truly pathetic question to ask but have there been any cases of viruses being input into the png files? i just got a new computer and im still a little over protective :tongue.gif:

I've seen some excellent points here, and some idiotic ones. Honestly, it doesn't matter if your country has specific rules pertaining to file redistribution. There were rules you agreed to follow both when you began playing Minecraft and when you joined this forum, both of which prohibit the transfer. If you aren't going to follow the rules of something, don't say you're going to.

You should at least have the last version, the one previous to the latest update, hosted on the site for several days so that people who accidentally updated who want to still have use mods that aren't yet compatible for the new update. That's my opinion, but I backed up just in case I want to go back.
They need a way to go back to the old versions either a download for people with premium accounts or a time machine in game that you craft and it turns your game into an old version :smile.gif:

Sure you can.
And that still doesn't make it right.
I KNOW THAT IM JUST SAYING IT
I don't see why it would be illegal for Mojang to host old versions of their *own* creation.
no..downloading torrents isn't illegal...downloading copyrighted/pirated material IS
and @falcon it's not illegal for Mojang to host their own product..it IS illegal for other people to do so.
