People didn't like Black Ops because of XYZ, what do we see? MW3 multiplayer trailer had me fooled that it was MW2 until I realised that the map was different.
Well, there's things that are wrong that are going to be fixed, things that are wrong simply by opinion, and things are wrong by a majority, but not for Notch himself.
I think with that said, if you have an opinion that doesn't reside in the majority, it's fine to voice it, but don't look for it to be changed. Just deal with it.
If it's something that's going to be fixed, no use crying about it.
If it's something that Notch isn't noticing that really sucks, you can ***** if you want (I think).
My own problem with 1.8, the performance, is an issue that will be solved with time. Otherwise, my issues reside mostly in Endermen, who are very disappointing. They're pushovers.
Other than that, the update is fine. I have a lot of problems with it, but these problems will be solved with time. My issues with Endermen... Not sure if those are issues Notch recognizes.
Everyone reacts to change (though some better than others). Initial reactions are usually the strongest. Once people settle down, more reasonable discussions can take place.
Since forums like this provide an immediate outlet for those initial reactions, that's a lot of what you see. Then, after a few days, you start to see the more reasonable discussions.
Regardless of the varying opinions on the changes, I think everyone would agree that 1.8 did change a large number of things about the game. When something that has been going along for over a year with only small incremental changes, suddenly changes pretty drastically, the opinions are going to fly, and they are going to fly hard.
I'm waiting for someone to post about how we are the beta testers, and if we don't give criticism how will anything get better; however, there is a big difference between giving something constructive criticism and being a jerk about it.
It's like if an artist asks you to critique his work, and instead of saying "Well, you could work a little bit better on proportions, your perspective is off, and take a little more time on your shading", you say "This sucks, you don't even know what you're doing".

That's my biggest issue. I totally understand disliking something, but there has been incredible RAGE on this forum from both sides. It's nasty!
Teenagers will never be happy with what they have.
This is a silly generalization.. and doing this sort of thing will eventually embarrass you at some point in life. Because many generalizations are just flat wrong. And the backfire makes you look foolish.
There are whiners in all age groups of life.
I'm not sure what to think about comments like the one you made here. Is it simply a good shame/belittling technique? You know.. someone disagrees with you, you call them a child.. and it somehow shames them into coming to your more "mature" perspective?
I find this subject interesting, because I'm much older than many of you, and I have routinely had people call me a teenager, or a child, for my opinions, when it's likely that I'm old enough to be their father. So I find it fascinating, the way young people think that anyone who disagrees with them must be an idiot child. Because obviously, now that they have reached adulthood.. they know everything.. and can't ever be wrong about anything. So anyone who disagrees simply must be less mature.
It's fascinating psychology, and I think relevant to the subject of this thread, as it's about attitudes people carry in gaming forum communities. I see this whole "whining kids" thing far too often, and it both irritates and fascinates me.

Considering I'm a teenager, I can relate to my statement.
I actively watch and write on both of these forums (Black Ops and Minecraft), and it seems like the Minecraft community is starting to get like the COD community. What I mean is how more and more people aren't pleased with new releases/updates. A big part of the COD community is always complaining even though the developers are actively updating the game to the consumer's wants. Now I'm starting to see it in this community. I can understand that you may not be happy with a few things in the updates. Ex: Someone may dislike the new hunger bar. But it seems like we are complaining too much now. So can someone please explain to me what is so wrong with 1.8? I think this has been one of the best updates so far! Please give me your feedback as I want to see how other people feel about this too.
There are a TON of good things that came about in the update, and hardly any bad in my opinion. I just don't get what all the complaints are about.
Also another thing to put it: There are some things that will get updated such as spawning in trees and water. You won't get everything perfect right away!
I think the problem you have is notch apparently always envisioned Minecraft as an exploration game with a lot of creative possibilities. However, he seemed to get really hooked on the crafting aspect early on and stuck with it. With that said, most of the fan base behind the game is addicted to building and the exploring was a side note.
With 1.8, exploration became the focus and it almost seemed like some additions of 1.8 were done to almost FORCE exploration. This is why, in my humble opinion, the community has been in an uproar.
It's like raising a child, just because you want him to be a politician (but he's addicted to music because of the classical lessons you had him take at a young age) does not mean you should force it on him... sooner or later, the child will come to resent you for it.
Honestly, I think 1.8 being a bitter-sweet experience was a good thing. It seems to have caused Mojang to remember that just b/c they want the game to take a direction, does not mean that their paying customers want it to... and it certainly doesn't mean that they should force them to.
I would agree with you about the COD community except there is a HUGE factor in the COD community that has little place here in terms of gameplay... there's no ego involved. It's not a competition, it's an escape, a fun experience, a creative outlet. People are upset, not because the latest change keeps them from being #1 on the leaderboards, it's because the changes have taken away something they've made part of their daily routine and consider a genuine good time.
I'm implying that people significantly preferred MW2 over Black Ops to the point where MW3 looks like an exact copy of MW2. Speaks volumes, that does.
That is your opinion, MW3 looks way different than MW2. And if it ain't broke don't fix it. And this isn't fanboyism or anything, I am probably not going to get it (too many other, greater games).
Perhaps, but you can't make sweeping generalizations.
Yes I can. Generally, most people that play Minecraft are from Mars. See, I made a generalization. It doesn't mean I'm right, it's means that, in my opinion, most people that play Minecraft are from Mars. Last I checked, we are all entitled to our public opinion on a discussion board.
The Minecraft community is becoming... more like every other community.
All communities whine and complain. No matter how suburb an update or a game is, people will still want more. It should be a rule of the internet. I know TF2 does this a lot, and Valve is a fantastic developer that makes fantastic games. Same with Minecraft. WOW. I guess COD.

Sure, I'm being a smartass, but I'm making a point. Which is more than can be said for 95% of posts on this forum, granted this topic is probably the most mature I've seen in a while with the exception of your non-contributional post.
1.8 had many big changes that had noticeable impact on game-play, such as the hunger bar, sprinting, critical hits, giant mushrooms, mobs that remove blocks, and a lot of bugs (more than the previous patches I've seen, though I haven't been around for that long), as well as other noticeable changes like chest sizes, void fog.
It was bound to get complaints, as every single one of these changes is noticeable enough to irritate at least a part of the player-base. All together, we end up with a lot of players being displeased about at least one aspect of the patch, even if they overall like it.
It should also be noted that if "the community" complains about patches taking too long to come out, and then about them being buggy, it isn't necessarily the same people complaining upon both occasions (though it can be for some cases).
After all, people bought the game expecting a certain kind of game-play, it can be frustrating if the game evolves away from this model and towards something they like less.
I for one have rather mixed feelings about the 1.8 update.

What's your point? "Teenagers will never be happy with what they have." This contributed what to this topic? Nothing. It is inaccurate and got us nowhere except one more post added to your post count.

I contributed my opinion to the topic. COD and games like such as commonly generalized as games with an immature teenager userbase, and I gave my opinion on such generalization with my own generalization. Please link me to the rule that says we're not allowed to give our opinions, unless they're proven scientific fact, on a discussion board, thanks.
Are you implying that MW2 was a bad CoD game?

But, that's just my two cents :smile.gif:
