I'm curious about what other people are eating now that we have to eat more regularly.
When I tried a test run from scratch first thing I ate was rotten flesh because my wheat farm hadn't yielded yet, but after my wheat farm was up I ate bread exclusively.
Later I found a huge herd of cows and got a full stack of beef, and I ate that for a while too, didn't bother cooking it tho, since I had plenty of it and wanted to use it up anyways.
In my main world I used to eat mushroom stew, but no stacking made that a bad option so I was eating bread, but after being out exploring for a long time I found it easier to setup small melon farms than to get a proper wheat farm.
So now I'm eating melon slices exclusively. They're only 1 hunger each, but getting refills is easy and 64 will keep you a while. Another nice thing is that you can turn them directly into seeds, so you can make a new farm from the actual food, so don't have to carry extra stuff to make a new farm anywhere you go.
I'm trying to get a chicken farm going as well, and so far got 10 chickens or so, and they drop a decent amount of eggs, but I've been getting unlucky with eggs hatching as more chickens. If I can get a viable chicken farm going I'll definitely be cooking them, but I'm not sure whether it'll yield enough to be a good food source compared to melons yet.
If there's another such poll I couldn't find it in the 1.8 forum when searching for it.

Chickens are in fact the best mob in the game. You get delicious roasted chicken for food... Feathers for your arrows, and although they do not respawn, you can use a collection of eggs to have an unlimited supply of the aforementioned items by building a simple productive chicken farm.

How many chickens would you say it takes for a productive chicken farm? I've got around 10 chickens but so far it's not doing as well as I'd hoped.

I built one in my 1.7 world that was based off one someone built and made a YouTube video for. At one point I probably had 25+ chickens floating around in a stream of water. With that many of them in there, I could easily collect 2-3 eggs per minute.
When I had enough eggs and it came time to harvest, I would use an arrow dispenser built in to the factory to massacre all the chickens. Pretty entertaining.
With the addition of roasted chicken and existing feather drop, the benefits of a chicken factory far outweigh those of any melon or wheat farms.

I've been unlucky with eggs I think, getting to 10 chickens took a lot of ingame days, and even at 10 and getting a decent amount of eggs, I'm not getting many new chickens from the eggs.
But my melon farm that takes up only 5x5 space is getting me around 32 melon slices in the time it takes me to get 1 chicken. And that took me all of a minute to setup heh.
I definitely want a viable chicken farm for chicken, eggs, and feathers, but so far it's proving difficult.

I use rotten flesh cause even though it decreases hunger for a bit, if I have one hunger, I can use a few to get full minus a little. And it's easy to get cause of a mob trap, so I have a couple of stacks.
On a side note, how do you get melons/make a farm?

You get melon seeds randomly in chests in abandoned mineshafts.
You can then plant those seeds on hydrated tilled dirt. It produces a stem that grows and when full grown melons can grow on adjacent tilled dirt. You can then break the melons for a bunch of melon slices, and then retill the spot it was so new melons can grow in the same spot, otherwise the stem will try to grow on another adjacent spot. Each stem can only have 1 melon adjacent to it.
You can turn melon slices into seeds through crafting, so you can get unlimited seeds after you've made one stem.
Pumpkins apparently work the same way and are supposedly found in mineshaft chests too, tho I've never found them.

Just had an idea for a chicken farm actually,
Set up a dispenser filled with captured eggs attached to a redstone circuit, and then cause chickens to fill a pen, slaughter, collect more eggs, refill dispenser and repeat.
Bread and fish are my main daily meals. Fish being the main dish.
I've a rather large farm set up not far from my home so I always have stacks of bread to nom on however I usually stick to fish since they "heal" more. I've also set up a chicken coop recently and have been collecting eggs which I'll eventually break open and send those chickens to slaughter.
As it is though, my daily routine consists of building and tending to the farm and chickens then at night time I fish from the docks. When dawn hits I run about collecting mob drops. Works quite well for me.
Interesting results so far.
I wasn't expecting to see beef so high up there, but checking the wiki they provide 1-3 beef (cooked 8 hunger each which is max except golden apples) as opposed to only 1 from each chicken or 0-2 from each pig. That explains how I got so much beef before too.
I'm somewhat concerned at how poor a choice pigs are now tho, their meat itself is same as beef, but you only get 0-2 instead of 1-3 of them from a cow, and cows also provide leather and milk. You can saddle a pig but that's not terribly useful. Maybe pigs will breed faster or something.
Bread is the clear choice of most so far, it's a bit of setup time but there's no arguing with the quantities you can get and it's general effectiveness, and it's easily accessible to all.
I'm surprised not many eat melon slices, I've found them a good source, but actually getting some melon seeds can be difficult.

Bread and melons mostly. I have a nice little farm behind my house. Complete with a small section for chickens. Which isn't doing too well. I can spam 32 eggs and only get one chicken. It's so stupid it hurts. I'm tempted to just edit in a full inventory of eggs and spam them till I have plenty of chickens to slaughter. There is no excuse for eggs being so utterly ****.
Past that, I also have a dispenser in my house full of pork, beef, chicken, and mushroom soup. I subsist on the melon and bread when I am out and about. When I'm just messing about the house and low on hunger, I press the button to get some dispenser goodness.
Though truthfully I probably have enough food resources for several players. The dispenser is mostly for flavor I guess.

I finally got my chicken farm to a useful state, but it took 50 chickens heh. Can easily get decent amounts of chicken now tho, but it's not an easy farm to setup.

"Minecraft? Realistic? Really? This is a game where you punch trees to get wood, you can make the wood into wooden planks in less than five seconds, and trees don't fall even if you remove a piece of the trunk from the middle. This is a game where animate corpses, giant spiders and exploding green terrorists emerge at night to hunt you down, farm animals run rampant across the countryside, and you can stop the flow of molten lava with a block of snow."

I subsist on fish in the beginning. While the fishes are filling my belly I'm building a chicken coop. After I've built up several backup stacks of eggs (on about 20-24 birds), I use any new ones to make chickens that are butchered right away. My coop usually has about 12 birds in the end to keep me going, but I could easily raise the number if I started doing more dangerous activities and wanted some extra food around to keep my belly topped off.

I still prefer bread. I always love advancing towards a point where I have a large automatic wheat farm that produces 9 times more wheat than I'll ever need lol.
After having a good chicken farm going, I've gotten over 64 cooked chickens and it's pretty decent. I think the best part of a chicken farm is the harvesting tho. You put like 10 chickens in a pen and axe them like crazy lol. But I think that chicken farm took a couple ingame weeks to setup. Tho would be easier to setup new ones now that I can produce 64 eggs in a short amount of time.
But in practice I'm still liking melon farms best. I've been able to seed many outposts in my travels with melon farms, and whenever I return to them I can be sure of constant food at each of those outposts. And those farms take all of a minute to setup and only require dirt, water, and 8 melon slices.
As long as I've got some melon seeds on me I can be sure to make unlimited food easily.

The best source of food is pigmen. If you are a competent fighter and you find a cavern that isn't infested with ghasts, you have attained a never ending source of already cooked pork chops. Since my friends and I went to the nether in SMP, pork is all we eat because we get so much of it.
