Elding, do you think endermen could look harmless (dark greyish, soft pastel eyes with matching colored smoke particles) and then switch to a frightening appearance (very dark black, deep neon colored eyes, black smoke particles) when aggro'd? Instead of shaking, they'd just stand stock still and watch you, opening their jaws only when the start attacking?

That. Is. BRILLIANT.

I still have yet to see anyone make a statue of a dwarf strangling a kitten that you can live inside.
Sweet, I didn't know it had a distinct name (tho every phenomena has one these days). This 'effect' is everywhere, so without a doubt it is also here on the forum. It is what caused the great religions to amass a following and was what ended many great civilizations.
I do find there are many other enderman topics that better deserve your post than this one.
Agreed. It seems like the Endermen were rushed. I especially like the idea of the ambient noises they could make.
One idea I got from the trailer, however, was that if you looked at them and they were able to attack and kill you, your screen would be overcome with their face, and out of your corpse rose an Enderman.
Minecraft is beta and unfinished. Endermen are not done being developed.
/thread
sirp0p0 is a poster that doesn't understand the meaning of the word 'Beta' to use it properly and hasn't even fully read OP's post before making a useless copypasta reply.
My main problem is the fact they can pick up any block for no reason, a creeper will ruin your stuff if it sees you but endermen tear my structures apart
Structures, forests, hills, beaches... Basically anything you can't submerge in water or illuminate and moat off. If it's not your house they're disassembling, by luck or by protective measures, it's everything else. That is my biggest complaint. I don't mind if they're unfinished and not very interesting at the moment. That may come. It's the active detriment to the game environment I mind.
Holy wow... +46 rep for my first real attempt at a thread? You guys rock!
I adore the idea of Endermen changing from their current pastelish look to a more intense ominous one when provoked. I agree with the spamposter though about this game being a beta work in progress, but that's not /thread material. That's why this thread even exists. If this were the last update we'd ever get, I wouldn't care to suggest ways it can be better, but I have a bit of a hopeful belief that the developers of minecraft care a bit about what we want while their game is being made. This is not a complaint thread. It's a suggestion thread with rant elements.
4. They SOUND lame. In suspense in cinema, sound is EVERYTHING. I had expected some ingenious soundwork for such a well-planned mob. Instead, I get to hear zombies. Don't get me wrong. When I was fresh to minecraft, the zombie sound in a dark cave really drove me crazy (in a good way). Now... it's just a little heads-up that there's darkness nearby. Skeletons and Creepers are the only monsters that kept me on edge after over 100 hours of gameplay.
4. Sound. They should trigger ambient sound-events that uniquely alert players to the presence of something horrible somewhere nearby. Something.... spinechilling. Whispers maybe... Whatever it is, it should be out-of-place for where the player is, and should warp any other sounds. I believe audible sounds of the players suspense should be present too. Heartbeats or even dampenign and warping of sounds like a rush of blood to the head would cause. They should be erratic too. Sometimes whispering quietness, sometimes shrill shrieks.
I just really think Endermen should be in heavy development right now, because they are just... too little to ammount to anything.
So i totally agree with you. When i first encountered them I heard the zombie sound and I whipped around expecting to see a zombie. But instead I was face with a twitching tall thing. I think their passive sounds should be a random mob sound. ANY mob sound. They could keep one sound profile for a minute or two. then switch. Would be disconcerting to hear a pig turn to get some bacon and be met with not bacon.
When you stare at them. They should rip right round and stare at you. And not twitch. (i don't even think the twitch was intentional. I took it as the mob is constantly checking for you to look away.) I think all other sounds should be dampened or silenced. replaced by a quiet rushing sound slowly getting louder.
When you look away I would like to hear a shriek. I hear the nazgul's are looking for voice acting work. And I want it to blink RIGHT THERE. its gone. and it might not attack you right away. maybe not for a whole minute. Then BOOM when you are least expecting it. perhaps when you put your sword or bow away.
after it hits you expecience the slowdown sensation. It might blink off and appear a bit away staring at you. Then vanish when you are no longer slowed.
when endermen are in groups. I want to feel the terror of all of them staring at me. They don't rush at you if you are still looking at the offended one. But when you do look off they all blink or charge.
They need to be completely unpredictable. Will the charge immediatly. Will they charge and vanish before hitting you. Will the blink immediately and bide their time till you least expect it. Perhaps they blink out and wait till you have 3 hearts left.
My first encounter with them was how I thought they would act all the time Story Time gather 'round youngins
I was on a small island. So no meat but zombies. I had a small farm in the works but It was taking too long and I was starving. That night I began hunting on the island. Looking for either bones or zombies. Either one meant I ate. I heard a zombie behind me. I whipped around drawing my blade. I was face to face with an Enderman. The spider in the distance went silent. The creeper trapped in a hole stopped moving. It was silent. I figured I could walk towards him and snag my first endermen kill. I assumed the grass he was holding came from elsewhere. Unfortunately It was the block directly in front of me he had taken. I fell and He vanished dropping the grass. Panic stricken I looked about Searching for it. The spider saw me and charged. Easy 3 hit string, one; two; *Poof* *Smack* *poof* endermen out of the corner of my eye blinked in and got me. and now the spider got a free shot aswell. Low on health I take out the spider. and dig the standard 2x1 tomb to hide in. When day approaches. I hear things dying. I figure it was safe. I climb out and *poof* it is there in front of me. He stands there a second before killing me. It felt like he was saying "im going to enjoy this"
Well this thread got my attention and then trolls attacked, as usual. I agree with you that endermen are horribly executed. More of a griefer than anything. IMO I think that silverfish and poisonous spiders are much scarier. Silverfish swarm you very quickly and poisonous spiders basically double damage you and continue to damage you after they die. I think this thread has lots of good suggestions
Everything you've said seems nice. Especially the brightness option, I'd prefer if they do bring darkness with them.
And as for when the day comes, It would be better if they exited back to whatever dimension they hail from, hopefully in a very flashy way.
The only thing I don't agree with is getting rid of the gapping jaw, and the shuddering. I absolutely love that trait about them, I'd suggest that you can only stop them in their tracks once, but they still might keep their mouths open.
As for the audio, although I haven't heard official news when the CORRECT sound that the Endermen will make will be out, I'm sure they will sound much more frightening.
My thought on the matter, is simply we asked for the update far to soon, I'm guilty because I wanted them to finnish it and gimme, but Endermen should have came to us in 1.9.
I really hope changes will be made.

In the pre-release I gently glanced over one at around 25 meters and then it gave me a quick ghastly stare while standing stiffly still and then teleporting without walking over the terrain to close the gap, appearing here and there before appearing a block or two in front of me, hitting me, me taking a swing at it, and then it teleporting out of sight and me going "Oh where the **** did it go?!?!" and trying to find the damn thing. I did of course, when it smacked me in the back, I quickly dispatched of it after that of course but I remember it being quite a frightening mob, when it works. Endermen do not work well in caves, that's for sure, I had a similar experience to the OP where I stared at one for quite some time while it fidgeted in place and did nothing until I chopped it to bite sized chunks.
So yeah, on one hand I agree, on the other I disagree. Endermen are a force to be reckoned with because of their unpredictable sporadic teleporting, but they lack a high enough damage/health, proper sounds (I'd prefer if they were silent) and sometimes simply don't work.
Also, creepers don't bother me anymore, skeletons are my big problem cause they shoot me from the darkness and freak me out. I usually see creepers coming from a mile away, except that one time one tried to ambush me behind a wall but couldn't understand that he also had to pop out of it when I got close. Woulda been a nasty surprise, but it wasn't :\
It might be interesting if, when in packs in the open, you glance at one of them they all look at you and start teleporting everywhere. You'd be dead pretty fast that's for sure.
Sometimes I wonder if people make topics like these because the "Bandwagon effect"

I'm not accusing the OP of this, I'm just stating that probably a few of the people who are hating on 1.8 features might be doing so because of this
That. Is. BRILLIANT.

Well, I won't argue with you on that.

Except that they're not based on Slendermen, they were just named similarly because of how forumers commented on their resemblance.

Look at us now, complaining that it sucks. and the ender pearls have no use. meaning endermen are USLESS!
It doesn't mean that at all. It means it requires future updates, thats what it means.
