Us. We begged, we spammed, we rushed, we pestered, and we annoyed. We asked for a buggy, incomplete update just so we could play something new, and we got we asked for. We got what we deserved.
Those of you that are happy, fine. Those of you that are unhappy but demanded updates, I suggest you think more about your actions in the future. Those of you that sat quietly and waited, you have my deepest respect. I wish there were more people like you on these forums.
/end community scolding.

Stupid people say stupid things. Sometimes smart people say stupid things too. It's when the stupid people say smart things that life gets interesting.
I agree somewhat with you but I'd like to add that maybe Mojang could have handled this better.
They waited too long and put too much in this update, they should have split it up. If a developer adds too many new things without debugging the old things enough, this is what happens.
One has to add features to a program a little at a time or they might overlook serious bugs.

In all seriousness, yes, 1.8 would have been far better if the community wasn't so loudly begging for it. Then again, if the Mojang team just had some earplugs...
Yep I agree. I'm tottally happy with the update. Thrilled in fact. Its like this community doesn't know what it wants. Or it wants something unrealistic like being able to play minecraft on a computer from the mid 90's with fancy graphics. Plus it seems trendy to not like any changes that are made. Idk but its frustrating.
I agree that Mojang could've handled it better maybe actually finished at least one of the promised features instead of releasing everything at halfway. I would've been happy if just the biome code had been finished. But the community got out of hand and started yelling "gimme!" and we got this... mess.

But 1.8 wasn't a disappointment. Many of you just set your expectations far too high.
1.8 is, to me, the best update ever released. It even beats out the much-trumpeted update of Halloween 2010, not only in features, but in stability and playability. The Halloween update, while I enjoyed what was added, caused me to stop playing for a while until certain things were fixed. (Trees causing severe lag, leaves not disappearing, creepers spawning inside a very well lit base deep underground.)
Now I followed the 1.8 update just as closely as anyone else here, and the only thing I could say I'm "disappointed" in is the fact that the Adventure portion was split into two updates, so things like XP doesn't do anything yet. But even then, that only leaves us stuff to look forward to.
Basically, you were promised a delicious cupcake. You pictured and expected a lavish, multi-layer cake flocked with diamonds and gold. Then you received a delicious cupcake, and cried foul.
While there was some things that could have been done better, a was overall satisfied with the update. The few vocal unsatisfied do not reflect the general opinion.

Face.
Palm.
They tried to split it up already (Hence why 1.9 is the other half of this update), the community constantly bitching about wanting updates caused them to release it early, if they had even just one more week, it'd be a lot better.
IMO, they should have completely finished the entire biome code (With the changes that'll happen in 1.9 too) and the strongholds, then made the rest happen for 1.9, without previews.

Notch on his twitter: "bugs that feel wrong get fixed"
Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.

More accurately: I was promised a cupcake. I expected a cupcake. I got a muffin. Still good, but disappointing.
Basically, we've been waiting for this Adventure update since after 1.6. When I heard that it was being delayed to 1.8 so Mojang could make it better, I was happy. Then, they failed to deliver. The terrain gen isn't done, the adventure features aren't done, and it's buggy as all hell. Still not a bad update, but it's not what we were told we were getting.
1.8 promised many things. I hoped it would deliver at least a few of those things in a fully functioning state. Admittedly, I'm quite biased, as the only things I had any real interest in were extended farming and improved biome generation (I would actually qualify the new biomes as a step backwards, but that's from the perspective of an animator/3D graphics student). Even so, it seems to me that many of the features were incomplete and/or so buggy as to be rendered incomplete.
Endermen: not scary. Never seen them teleport. General annoyance that presents no danger. Uses zombie noises.
New biomes: Removed snow, borders look WORSE than they used to, mountains no longer as interesting or unique.
Extended Farming: Added melons, melon seed, made pumpkins farmable, but seeds only occur in dungeon chests. Ok, sure... but what about the things we already have that we still can't farm? Cocoa beans? Apples? Failure to implement animal farming or sheep regrowing wool.
New Combat: Blocking not implemented. New bows are admittedly impressive, but make it even easier to kill mobs that are already very easy. Added knockbacks and critical hits, which also make killing monsters easier.
Added new underground stuff: It's cool, but it occurs too frequently, there's little variation between the structures, and pretty much eliminates caves as they used to be. Also goes deeper, making it easier to reach valuable ores.
Added strongholds which currently serve no purpose: Alright, I can understand wanting to get some things into the world generator early.
Added hunger system and connected animals to chunk generation: More reason for farms, but didn't actually implement animal farming. Ties into combat and gives people a reason to build giant farms (not that we needed one), but feels unfinished and can lead to frustration when animals are cleared out.
I'm not asking you to agree that the update was disappointing, I'm asking you to recognize that it's unfinished and it's probably our fault. Every last one of these features needs more work invested in it.

This.
Honestly no matter how long it takes, EVERY developer should take the time to test it and look for bugs.
The fact that it came with so many bugs shows that they don't care enough to test their update...BEFORE they release it.
What's more annoying is the fact that the community released hotfixes before mojang did anything about it...
When the adventure update was delayed more I even sent notch a twitter post basically saying
"Take your time with the patch! I'd rather have a non-buggy update and wait then for you guys to rush it"
I guess they didn't get that tweet...or they took their time and half-assed it.
This talk about cupcakes is making me hungry, oh and i think 1.8 is a fine muffin at best, but has small pieces of potato that need to be worked out and revised hence the 1.9 cupcake update

...they did split it up.
The things we got earlier (pistons, etc) were supposed to be part of the adventure update. So were NPS, etc, that are part of 1.9.
I agree that a big factor in the timing of 1.8 was the fanbase demanding an update, but if I recall correctly it was originally planned for about this time. I was also rather underwhelmed by the fact that most features were only half finished. I wish that Mojang would 1) hire more coders 2) adopt a more systematic approach to adding features and 3) not tell us anything until it's implemented. 1.8 is still a nice update (once the bugs are worked out!) but I would have been happier to wait for the 1.9 features. Many of which will probably end up in 1.10 once people start complaining again [prediction].
