Playing Minecraft purely for surviving surely gets boring pretty quickly.
That's why you build stuff and harvest resources.
However, Mojang want to add some kind of challenge to this game mode.
It's not like you can't make a contraption that acts as defence against Endermen.
A water moat, for example, would be perfect since they can't swim and will just die pretty quickly.
Use signs at the bottom of the moat and you can build a central collection point which can be used to collect Ender pearls automatically.
Also, as I already said, there is no reason for a mobtrap to be more than two blocks high as there is no mob higher than that that drops anything you'd want to have.
I read that endermen get hurt by water, but some of the blocks removed were at the bottom of a channel... I can't keep them away because there is darkness in my trap. As to the ceiling not being over 2 blocks, I read that having more space increases spawning. Maybe you know otherwise. If that works the same, I could go through the hassle of adding 600 dirt blocks to every ceiling in my trap, although that won't be much fun, especially since I won't be able to get TNT from my trap anymore and will have to dig 600 dirt blocks by hand.
Survival is fine, but if the game was only about surviving, it'd be boring. You could just dig a hole in the dirt and hide at night, then stay there forever and you'd survive. I doubt anyone plays the game for just that. You're right.
So how would you feel if creepers went around and randomly exploded while in the forest or cave 50 blocks from where you are? There is a design reason why Notch chose not to do that. Do I just "deal" with the fact that unless you spend weeks building an ugly demilitarized zone around the greater region in which my house is located and place torches everywhere, most of the area will eventually get turned into a giant mess of randomly placed circles of blocks?
This is poor game design.
Also, like I said, killing things turns into grinding(a sign of bad game balancing) once you have progressed through the game and want to do grander things. Hence mob traps.
I mean, by the logic of some people here they should abolish the diamond pick? It makes mining too easy, we should "earn" our blocks by spending 8 hours a day playing minecraft instead of going to work or school.
You can tame them to carry your blocks? I didn't know that, but then again, if the game isn't about building, why use them to carry blocks anyway...
I wasn't aware Mojang were against mob traps. I find that sad.
To be honest, I don't like that either.
Playing Minecraft was way more fun to me when it was still just a sandbox game with some mobs and crafting.
You could do whatever you want. The only limitations there were was your creativity.
I'm not implying that isn't the case anymore now, but Mojang have added a lot of half-finished, useless stuff.
But yeah. Everyone should have expected that. The game mode has been called "Survival" from the beginning on.
And you can't tame Endermen, but it would be amazing if someone got them to move a bedrock block up to the surface.
Just a thought:
Maybe a certain someone should stop b*tching about someone "whining" when they're tired of a million people "expressing" (usually quite rudely) their concern over a particular feature, that the creator of the game was perfectly within his rights to implement, and some of us actually find quite cool. So stop telling people to stop telling people to "get used to it" and get used to people who can turn your argument right back on you, because your part of this argument is just as petty and silly as the rest of it. You're not automatically superior just because you decided to be condescending toward other people. Good lord, you'd swear this guy was 10 years old...
I was arguing for a solution for BOTH sides and was pointing out that you attacking someone's suggestion for what they feel could be an improvement in the game is uncalled for. However, I've seen enough of your posts to know that your mentality won't accept that so I won't argue with you, there'd be no point. Insult people all you like, it only reflects back on you.
I still agree that the Endermen need some method of limiting their ability to pick up certain blocks. Though I'm guessing mods will be created for this soon given how many people feel that it is a bad feature to begin with.
Creepers explode because you interact with them, Endermen grief without any need of interaction
How would people like it if Creepers could blow up on a whim?
I, personally, would find that quite funny. Especially if they did it because they were attacking Skeletons or Zombies... You know, Notch mentioned more Mob interaction...
Even if I have to rebuild stuff as a result, who cares? What the hell else am I going to do? It's minecraft, and I'm playing Survival mode. If I have to rebuild something, that gives me something to do.
I really don't see the problem. Its a griefing mob after all, much like a creeper. It's just doing its job. What you can't make like a wall around your death machine to prevent anything form the outside breaking it besides getting in the entry point?
Build your mob grinder a bit differently.
If you've looked at my factory, you know nobody can come near it because it's in the middle of the sea, for one, and it's in the air, for two. The problem is they spawn inside it, like every other mob. And yes, I was told to lower the ceilings down to two. I hope this would work, but even then, it wouldn't solve enderman's nuisance, such as messing up the landscape everywhere.
I absolutely agree, this has got to get fixed. I had an Enderman steal a chest from me - THROUGH a cobblestone wall, on my 2nd night :dry.gif:
I was lucky enough that the items just dropped where the chest was.
There are also ways to prevent them, and you've been doing nothing but spouting "I WAS RIGHT! I WAS RIGHT! YOU ALL ARE WRONG, YOUR OPINIONS ARE INVALID!!"
So spare us your presence.
Deal with it, son. I was absolutely correct when I anticipated that dougs randomly moving blocks around would just serve as an irritation, and offer nothing of value to gameplay. And I only pointed that out with my first post, all of my posts afterward had nothing to do with my predicting this situation, so nice try at misrepresenting my comments, homie :tongue.gif:
I was arguing for a solution for BOTH sides and was pointing out that you attacking someone's suggestion for what they feel could be an improvement in the game is uncalled for.
Those "suggestions" amounted to "I don't like Survival mode", considering nearly every issue with Endermen can be resolved without mods. The "worst" one is that you will get randomly placed blocks left around your base.
If people don't want mobs hassling their buildings they can build mob exclusion areas, play Creative, play peaceful, play peaceful most of the time but turn it up when they want to go spelunking etc.
However people who want a challenge can't do simple changes like that to get creatures like Endermen into the game.
