So has anyone else here successfully been able to play the prerelease on mac os x? I only have been able to get upto the title screen and I can't ge my seeds/maps to load.
I'm not having any problems. Are you sure you installed it right? Or does it have something to do with your OS X? Post your hardware and OS X version so people can help you better.

If that's true then I wouldn't have been able to play 1.7.3.
1.8 is installed completely different then 1.7.3. you have to go into library then application support, after that go to minecraft in that folder go into bin and replace the old minecraft.jar with he 1.8 one you downloaded
Its working fine for me as well on mac os x 10.6. Follow the instructions of the guy above me and it should work. The new patcher for 1.8 also works fine for higher resolution texture packs

I am aware that the way you would get 1.8 running but the problem is that whenever I join a server or load my maps the screen goes black. When I mean screen I mean the application screen not the whole computer.
It works on my Mac. It works on my brother's Mac. It works on my brother's friend's Mac. So I don't know what your problem is, except that maybe you're somehow installing it wrong.
Then again, some of my friends can't get 1.8 pre-release to work on their computers even though others with the same OS got it to work just fine. It's really quite strange...
if you are running mods you might get a black screen due to some issues with the mods and 1.8. other than that reason the only reason it should do that is if your minecraft worlds themselves are corrupted. In that case you need to get MC Edit and move your spawn that should fix it.
My best suggest suggestion would be to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6). It's only $30. Someone a couple posts up said Minecraft doesn't work that well on 10.5, and I've noticed that too. Then again the only computers I have that are still running 10.5 are PPC-based, I haven't used 10.5 on Intel in a long time.
10.5 here. Can't install 1.8. Well, I can, but it freezes after it says "world generating". Also can't mod. I can mod well on other computers, and have installed 1.8 on other computers. But this one... *sigh* no dice.

I'm on the same OSX, it seems that the blackscreen is universal for that version of tiger.
BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
Thing is I can't get even get to worlds. All I get is a black screen.

Could that be a reason why?

Likewise.
