My brother is cheap. I mean really cheap. I'm not talking clip coupons and check the day old section at the bakery, I'm talking about taking broken kids bikes other people are throwing away cheap. Let's try a little mental exercise. You know that older gent, maybe an uncle or a family friend, who you've been telling for three years he is in desperate need of a new computer? You know, the guy who's computer still has a 3.5 floppy drive? You know how after years of suffering through using an outdated machine that guy generally breaks down and goes and gets a new computer. My brother is the guy who takes the old one as a hand me down.
Needless to say, the computer he plays minecraft on is embarrassingly outdated. I work with a nonprofit that refurbishes old computers to give to poor families with kids that need computers for schoolwork. We don't take computers as old as this beast. Of course, he plays with ALL graphical frills turned off and view set to tiny. He doesn't cycle through veiw distances as even trying to load the far view distance can overload the smidge of memory the computer has and crash the game.
Anyway, my point is that if a computer like that doesn't need the F key, yours probably doesn't either. If it does, troll craigslist for some old guy giving away an embarrassingly bad computer and use that as your upgrade.
It's a convenience feature, simple as that. I find it annoying that if I wanted to change my render distance now I have to go through 4 different things instead of just hitting one key, that's been there since alpha. There was no logical reason to change it.
I now have to use the F key quite a bit, not to find dungeons, but to keep the game playable. I often find fps dropping to 5 or less, a tap on the F key will give me back 20-25 fps plus some responsiveness, regardless of what view distance it will change to. I felt there was probably some resource leak going on sometimes, because it's not consistent.
The F key has got more necessary with each update (weather was worst). 1.8 could be the point where I have to stop playing if performance is the same or worse. This change will make the game unplayable for some.
The F key doesn't need to come back it's true, people don't need to play the game.
This is the same for me. Even playing on Tiny causes my framerate to drastically drop after about 30 seconds or so, even with Optifine, my computer's only about two years old as well.
The F key was useful to me! I have a great computer, but sometimes servers or the game might get a little glitch, then all I had to do was hit 'F' a couple times then the problem was solved. Now I have to go into about 4 menus.

Too long did not read | Keep It Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S)
It seems that everyone that says "We need an F key cos our computer sucks" assumes everyone who DOESN'T need it has a supercomputer.
The OP (And a bunch of other threads, posts and posters) have proven that you do not.
I'm inclined to hazard a guess that maybe these people are running mods/HD/other stuff in the background, and that THAT is the main cause of their problem.
I just don't get all the people complaining about this. It reminds me of the people in MMOs like EverQuest, Ultima Online and early World of Warcraft all saying there shouldn't be any graphical upgrades because their computers wouldn't be able to handle the new specs.
How about instead of expecting the developers to cater for the rest of time to people like you who have computers so bad you can't even run Minecraft properly, you just suck it up and get an upgrade?
The game's development shouldn't be held hostage to a few people who have **** computers.
Almost everyone ITT: "I have shitty computer. I rather use F key than saving money to buy new laptop/upgrade PC that would end my suffering from 5 fps."
Seriously, you have two options.
1. Save money to upgrade or even more money to get a gaming laptop.
2. Stay on fast and tiny for 5-20 fps.
This thread is trolling, that thread is trolling. The internet serious business tubes.
You were using a feature in ways it wasn't intended, and it got changed. Can we let the programmers make some decisions about their program? Is that gonna be a possibility at some point?

Ahem....it's not a super computer, because even those would run out of avaliable memory for minecraft!

This.
Also, to the people who are saying because people used it to find out what time it was and mobs, what about F3? That's the main reason people find spawners and what not.
Not F.
As for finding out what time it was, whoop-ee-doo-da, was that really a big enough deal to remove it? I don't think so.

Agreed lol but its the internet what do you expect.
Get a new damn computer, its that simple. Just because Minecraft has the graphics of a 10 year old game DOES NOT mean it runs like one! So many people complain about performance and in the same sentence mention they are playing on a laptop or even worse an eee pc. The majority of laptops just dont have the power to run MC properly especially with the usual third party software that clogs up laptops.

This. People used it for finding mob spawners and now they can't. Also you could check time of day from underground without a watch.

Yes, BUT MCEdiit is a third party program, most people don't bother to even download it, and learn the simple movement keys AND search for one.
PLUS IT'S CHEATING!!! :wacko.gif:
