I realize I made a similar topic recently, but this one is focused on only the Enderman and why it's failed to deliver as the mob Notch promised it to be. Here's what we knew up until a little before the PAX preview:
-> It's a rare monster that spawns in darkness.
-> It picks up blocks.
-> Looking at it will make it freeze
-> Looking away makes it teleport
Sounds pretty creepy, right? You imagine these tall, dark, shadowy creatures that have similar abilities to you: able to pick up and possibly place blocks!
And that's pretty much what we got.
I'm sure we all remember the dozens of topics of "z0mg!! endermen!" and "preparing for endermen battle" as people anticipated fighting this horror.
But suddenly, woohoo, the 1.8 leak is here! Time to get fighting, but how on earth do you kill those things?!
Here's the deal: this is the only mob that gives you more than 2 choices on how to kill it.
1.
Yup, that's it. Just place a bucket of water next to the Enderman and you're good to go! Boy, is that challenging.
2.
This is probably the best way to deal with an Enderman. Look directly at it, charge your bow, and shoot it. Don't worry, it's too stupid to teleport to you: so just shoot it once more and it'll die.
3.
While this technically could count as a killing method for all of the other monsters, at least they put up a fight! Just set fire to the ground next to the Enderman once or twice and he'll be a goner.
4.
If all of those methods are somehow too hard for you, you could always just choose to avoid them altogether by slapping on a pumpkin.
5.
What's that? You actually managed to kill an Enderman? Well, now you can enjoy the privilege of them never being able to touch you! Just continuously right-click with this Ender Pearl in your hand to completely negate the only challenge Endermen have- teleporting! You can push them away from you as long as you like: probably until daytime comes and they burn to death.
What's my point in all this? Endermen are extremely underpowered. They were advertised as a creepy and tough-to-kill mob. Instead, we got a creepy and easy-to-kill mob. There are literally so many ways to kill this monster easily, it shouldn't even be counted as a hostile mob.
The very nature of its aggro-on-cursor-touching-it is so that you can avoid it if you aren't prepared: so it wouldn't be bad at all to make this monster much, much tougher. I'm just really disappointed with how they turned out, and the only planned feature for the Endermen that hasn't been implemented yet is new sounds and them placing the blocks they pick up(so don't yell at me "IT'S A PRE-RELEASE!")
tl;dr: Endermen are not challenging, or scary, or creepy.

Honestly I think you could up the scare-factor 10x by just making them always teleport behind you. Not when they're aggro-ing, just in general. You're just walking through a cave, and you turn around when- Oh jesus christ an enderman has been trailing you the whole time.

I don't think it's all that big of a deal that they aren't hugely difficult to kill. None of the mobs are. What makes them all cool (at least for me) is how different they are, and endermen are definitely different.
They weren't necessarily advertised as being extremely difficult to fight. Most of what I remember just says that they're creepy and unique.
they should probably just have more HP. they seem to take a pretty standard number of hits. also they'll be decidedly creepier/cooler when they actually build **** with the blocks they pick up. you'll be sitting there morbidly fascinated with the abstract **** they're building, trying not to let your crosshair touch them, then you forget for a second and BOOM - the eyes light up and it's staring at you.
good concept for a mob overall but yeah i agree it needs a slight adjustment.
They are really underpowered. I would put zombies and spiders above them even as a potential threat. Kids went crazy worrying about it and Notch had pity on them but the end result is wayyyy too much pity. Minecraft is supposed to kick your butt sometimes.

Well it still kicks your butt sometimes, doesn't it? Who says that endermen have to be the ones who kick your butt?
I don't care if they ever become more difficult to fight, I just don't see what the big deal is over them being rather easy.
We could also remember that this update isn't technically complete. I mean they even use zombie sounds as a placeholder. Seems like a pretty good indication that things aren't really polished up yet.
The skeleton aiming AI is VERY much improved, showing just how much of a joke Endermen are. Got into a fight with 4 Endermen, won with half health, got into a fight with 2 skeletons, lost... only one was killed. (Yes, I always crit, and always sprinted, they interrupt sprint and have dead aim now)

That may have been one of the coolest things I've ever read on this forum.
I'd love to see these things just a little bit faster and harder-hitting. Maybe parrying too. Right now they're basically lanky zombies that teleport and don't aggro unless you smack or cursor them. >.>

Connect Four: Possibly the best idea in the history of Minecraft. Sand and gravel I assume?
I agree, they should be a bit stronger. Not anything like 2-hitting you, but maybe just a bit stronger and take another hit to kill. :tongue.gif:
I'd say bring the health up to 25, instead of 10. The thing that makes them scary is that they teleport, and you can't experience if you just two hit kill it with a diamond sword.
One small thing I can think of that would help at least a little bit is that if you release an arrow towards it, it could instantly aggro and teleport behind you. That would at least make them more difficult to range to death

This.
It does exactly what Notch/Jeb said it would, what did you expect?
F5 much?

The pumpkin was relatively recent, the water was at PAX, and the Ender Pearl was never announced.
Those all came after it was described in great detail.
Well, I suppose playing on F5 would ruin the surprise a little, but hey, it'd still be freaky for an enderman to just teleport behind you.

That may have been one of the coolest things I've ever read on this forum.
-make them rarly spawn if groups
-make them disapear if they hit rain of sun
-deal 5,7,9 hearts of damege and nock you back more
-make them teleport behind you more
-make no sound
-eyes turn red when they attack you
-if you stare it them for more then 10 secounds you are stunned and they teleport behind you
