I read your entire post, and yes... I too am disappointed with what seems to be a 1.8 update falling short of the mark. I can understand where your coming from, but my advice to you: take your passion for this and put it into something else. Notch is gonna do what Notch is gonna do. If you really think hard about it... Your letting a bunch of stuff that unfolds in front of your computer screen upset you. Minecraft is a game... It's meant for simple entertainment purposes. Don't get too wrapped into the drama of it. Don't over analyze Notch's intentions because the truth is... What do you personally really know about him... Nothing... Except what you read over the internet. People freak the hell out over this game and it's development and it's pretty sad to watch. If you want my opinion, it's that this thread is just a big ole heap of cyber waste. Thats about as much time as I can devote to adding to it.
I appreciate your input.
While I probably come across as pretty irate/aggressive in my opinions, I don't necessarily sit around and dwell on them. I've just been pretty annoyed with the whole 1.8 thing as it has unfolded and some of the decisions Notch appears to be making are pretty strongly opposite of what I believe someone in his position should be making.
You're absolutely correct in saying that the only things I know about Notch are what I see on the internet, which isn't all that much to be honest. But as a customer of his who pays relatively close attention to how he conducts his business, his business being mostly comprised of Minecraft coding and Public Relations at the moment, I do see a number of issues that raise some red flags.
I won't repeat them again, because they're mainly the ones that I've summed up in my original post. But I do feel justified in my thoughts that he is being an extremely irresponsible game developer/company owner.
Yes, Notch has a life outside of work. No, I don't think that should change.
BUT
If development for Minecraft is going to take a backseat and just kind of be a "when it happens/IF it happens" kind of ordeal, I think I speak for a good bit of the community when I say that it would be greatly appreciate if they would come out and actually say that.
Notch/Mojang seem to like to give the impression that they're really aggressively working on this game, which causes the community to eagerly anticipate the "new goodies" of the imminent update. It never seems to actually work out though. Old bugs remain, features that are communicated to us as being "good to go for update x.x" get pushed back update to update until they're forgotten about.
It's this kind of halftruth way of communicating combined with what I perceive as Notchs ego-run-wild that prompted me to post this thread.
To illustrate my point:
These are the things that are actually currently confirmed (front page of minecraft.net forum) to be ready for the next update, whatever/whenever that is: cobwebs
endermen
new lighting

NPC Villages
Randomly generated dungeons
New biome code
Fully functioning Creative mode (with Creative-type access to server mods/admins)
Critical hits

Notice that the most recent "official confirmed update list" (I'm assuming anything posted on the front page of the minecraft.net forums is official) contains the new biome code as probably the largest addition. NPC villages are a total unknown at the moment, I haven't seen hardly any mention of the expanded dungeons/strongholds he has mentioned, I can't say either way about the new farming options. As with a large number of proposed 1.8 features, there hasn't been any real definite confirmation on much of anything outside worldgen, creative mode and the food/combat upgrade.
You might also notice the way the most recent "confirmed feature" list is put together. Rivers and Oceans are seperate, eating animation is apparently important enough on it's own to list, they list only cobwebs which seems odd because we've seen more new blocks than that in action at PAX. It looks like a skimpy feature list that they really had to work to make seem a bit more substantial.
So this begs the question. Is whoever is in charge of the minecraft.net forum front page just slacking on posting a more up to date feature list? Or has Notch/Mojang just not actually confirmed anything beyond those? We know for a fact that NPC villages have been pushed back to work out some bugs, but other than that have we gotten any solid word from Notch/Mojang on whether or not anything else from PAX is going to be put on hold?
Herein lies one of my main issues. Poor communication. I understand the "if it happens it happens, stressing won't change anything" point, and trust me when I say that that is a 100% true statement. At the same time though, should they just be given a pass on their horrible public relations habits just because "the game is still in Beta"?
Mojang made a BIG impression when they showed up to the party.
Are they going to be remembered as just that? A big first impression that failed miserably on the follow-through?
Or are they going to get their act together and start acting like a responsible company who cares what its customers think?
I'm not asking for 1.8 right now. When 1.8 is actually released is of no real concern to me. My issue is entirely with the way Notch/Mojang are operating as a business, not some misplaced sense of personal entitlement.
Off topic: I love how this thread shows the people who can take opinions and discuss it and the people who cry "Q.Q" at the first sight of wall of text and 1.8 in the same place
Since when is he not entitled to a break or to work on something else?
Oh, and for those talking about 1.8 comeing in different part, it's so there will be less bugs around and so that everything can be fixed. There will also be lots of new generated features in 1.8, such as the mining shafts and strongholds. They're bound to be buggy in the way they generate (villages on an ocean?)
(But I'm not insulting you. You're entitled to your own opinion)
Before I post, I'd like to say that besides the 10 to 20 people that actually read his first post, I read it all so I'm not going to post a fanboyish comment.
Really, I feel the same ways in what you said about the breaks, the delays (if you call 1.8 a delay, but I'm referring to mostly other things in Mojang, like some items in minecraft (lantern) and other projects) and how big "events" in minecraft like a mod api are worked on for months on months and later just thrown aside (from what it seems) to work on something very minor and would have about an hour or 2 of OHMYGOD playtime, then get boring and just something you run up on and collect, or in a mobs case fight and be as if it was a zombie.
I feel that Mojang as a whole honestly just doesn't seem like they are willing. Don't get me wrong at all, I know they spent hours upon hours of work on Minecraft, Scrolls and small projects but it seems that ever since february of this year we've been only getting small additions to minecraft that really only benefit one group of people, being the builders, hunters or any other "class" if you want to put it, and those additions just lose their touch in a couple hours of playtime.
No, I am not just some guy hurt that 1.8 isn't out yet, I have patience compared to most of the minecraft players as a whole (mostly kids yes, and don't get hurt I said that, I'm not talking about you, the one reading this, necessarily). All in all, I just feel Mojang is very slowly losing it's interest in Minecraft which is why updates do take so long or why there's so many bugs, Mojang just doesn't test the builds enough or does not feel like working on Minecraft. They are humans so they deserve some free time but tbh, I think all the delays are a little too much (lanterns, mod api, there was a delay in weather for about 6 months after naming they'd add it very soon and 2 builds went by before it was even announced to be in the next update and better biomes are 4 that come off the top of my head).
All in all, I do not mean to come off as fanboyish to anyone and understand perfectly they have their own needs and they are human. I hate when people fanboy over Mojang anyways...
Sir, you are a complete idiot your yelling at mojang to hurry up, then get mad about 1.8 being split into 2 parts. They did this to release a new update faster AND make everyone happy, if they kept it as 1 part then it would take twice as long. You are controdicting yourself.
This thread is ridiculous. Notch taking a break is fine (wouldn't you need one?), and, by the way, he is not really taking a break. He works for Mojang, not himself, and they want him to work on this other project.
And, by the way, you might enjoy whatever game/project/test/whatever he is making. I personally am excited about Scrolls and even Cobalt (although Jeb is more involved with that one). Whatever this is, it should be cool also.
My reply is basically to point at the link in my signature because I've already written quite a long explanation as to why your points are invalid or uninformed. Yes, this thread and it's complaints are so old and repetitious that I can literally point to a post I made a while ago as a response.
I read it all, and you seem to be one of those people who go "X promised me y. It's been a week. I no have y, so X is evil and lazy." First, anyone who makes anything for the general public/anyone, should know how easy it is to make severely optimistic predictions about what will happen. Second, Notch hasn't promised anything about 1.8 other than that it is going to be called 1.8. Really there is nothing much in this. Notch does what he wants with the game, and finds out what works. There are people who like that sort of thing, and there are people who don't. This isn't a government. Just find a game that has what you want and play it. Don't whine about things that are out of your control. Yes, it is annoying that 1.8 isn't released yet, but complaining won't do anything.
While more thought-out and well-written than most, this thread boils down to the usual level of entitlement around here.
The horror, that Notch should work on any other project! That his company should actually try to make money! How dare he!
Let's try transposing that to other professions, shall we? "That doctor is rich! We made him rich! Therefore he owes it to us to provide service at the hours we want!" "That lawyer is rich! We made him rich! Therefore his firm shouldn't take on clients we don't like! It's just an attempt to make money!"
Sounds pretty silly, doesn't it?
Notch doesn't 'owe' us one single thing, except the game we already have. The OP seems to think that because we have 'made him rich' therefore he owes us development time. Well, we 'made him rich' because we enjoyed the game he made. It was a business transaction that is now complete; there are no extra strings attached, enabling us to demand things from the other party.
Do I want 1.8 and 1.9 now? Of course. Do I feel I have some right to demand it? Of course not. I do not get to dictate another adult's schedule. I do not get to dictate another adult's business priorities. I live with his schedule and his priorities, or else I take my money elsewhere - that's the way the world works. And so far, I think my investment in Minecraft has paid off handsomely; no complaints. I've gotten my money's worth many times over already, even if the game stops development now.
Now, I realize that there will be those who will dismiss my thoughts here as those of a 'mindless fanboy', regardless of how that squares with the facts. But in fact, my perspective comes from having my own business, not fanboyism. And well before that came to pass, I lived and worked in the real adult world. If you wish to disagree with me and have not done the same, please be advised that you are almost certainly courting carpal tunnel for nothing.
Most of this "notch's lazy" threads are caused by Notch himself and his tendency to talk freely about what he wish to do with the game. Most of the time "I want this" sounds like "I'll do this" but rarely means it, unfortunately. Plus he's undeniably a playful troll. I learned how to handle this: I don't believe what he says until I see it with my eyes, and still don't believe it 100% until I actually find it in game. This is not what I planned to do when I pre-purchased the game but hey, it's too late to change his attitude not purchasing the game so I'll just change my own. And never buy a Mojang game again.
BTW the 1.8 is delaying. Remember when it was supposed to be 1.7? And now we find it will be actually complete in 1.9? Not a big deal, but the numbers getting bigger and bigger shows us how this damn adventure update is not going as expected.
I read the OP and nothing else. You.Are.A.Retard.
Notch doesnt need to spend all his time developing minecraft. he was recently married,he does stuff for charity. Mojang (minecraft side) Has about 6-7 people working on it. You're not bashing them are you? You described the minecraft community as brainless. You are evidently, the minecraft community. You whine because notch cant get what yu want quick enough. And its in 2 parts simply because its actually TOO large for it to be downloaded. Its actually quite good because the majority of the stuff is coming into one part. The second part,1.9 will be the final before 2.0/full game. If it came in one i bet i would see you posting and flaming about how notch wasnt working fast enough.

Since when is he not entitled to a break or to work on something else?

There will also be lots of new generated features in 1.8, such as the mining shafts and strongholds. They're bound to be buggy in the way they generate (villages on an ocean?)
Your entire post basically tells me that you couldn't be bothered to read any of my posts in this thread before just assuming you knew what I had to say.
I've never once said "I think Notch should work on Minecraft 7 days a week, 365 days a year". I never even paid attention to how much time he actually spent working on Minecraft until I started following 1.8 progress. And even then, the only thing that I really noticed was how much he was doing *other* than working on Minecraft.
But with 1.8 (1.8.1?) chugging towards the finish line (which keeps getting further away), pieces falling off of it every bit of the way. He basically said, "Well, my part of the job is done, Jeb is taking over so I can focus on another project."
A company concerned with their public image and future sales would do everything they could to get this adventure update fiasco back on track. This sort of continued behavior will do nothing but harm Mojang in the long run.

What 'fiasco' was that exactly? Seems to me that showing off the parts of 1.8 that were ready at PAX was a success.
Has it occurred to you that maybe Mojang doesn't really need or want your business advice? They seem to have been doing fine without it so far.
I'v haven't read many posts in this thread, however, I did read some, but this is just a warning that what I say may of already been said or responded too.
I do agree with you OP, The fact is, Notch JUST did PAX and Showed off quite a bit of 1.8, making everything get excited for its release, plus the fact of him saying he might release it in two parts to get the first part out sooner made people thing it would come out fairly soon, then, to our surprise, he says he will STOP working on Minecraft for 2 Weeks to Work on A Secret Project, makes me think "WTH Notch".
In my honest opinion, He should finish up 1.8 ASAP to get it out sooner and get the bugs fixed, or heck, even finish up Part 1 and get it out so people can mess around with what he has already one, THEN for all I care he could go away for 4 Weeks to work on his project. But instead he decided to leave the Development of it to work on something else. Don't get me wrong, I know Jeb and everyone else on the Crew can get it done themselves, but an extra person working on it is that much less time to release it.
TL;DR: Notch should have waited until at least Part 1 of 1.8 was Released to leave for his project, not before.
Note- This ISN'T me saying "OMG I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE GAME NOW AND WILL NEVER PLAY IT.", because I actually still like the game, and can't wait for the update, and it will come out when it comes out. I also Know that there was no set release date, I never said there was. This is just my opinion on this ONE Situation, and doesn't change my Overall Opinion of them all.
I sorta agree with the OP, but then again i also came from the alpha days where there was an update every friday... until he actually formed a company to "speed things up"... wanna know how that turned out? an update every month, IF WE WERE LUCKY
maybe notch has already finished his part of 1.8 (and maybe his secret project is for us :biggrin.gif:)
and now its the rest of Mojang to add the finishing touches.

Why is it that most of the threads stating the bad practice of Mojang or it's members seem to be complaining that there's actual PROGRESS being made on Minecraft...?
I mean really...if it had been a week since 1.8 was first heard of, none of these threads would be here. As soon as an update reaches a certain amount of time in development, suddenly the company isn't doing it's job properly.
