So popping blocks emits these hostile insects, There is no indication how much damage they do or how frequently we will encounter them but it seems that those that Mine a lot, that is they dig to look for resources rather then employ the use of preexisting cave walls, might be for a large amounts of silverfish damage.
This will both wear down your health but also erode your armor.
Many of the details are not in, as in how easy is this to avoid, or how much easier it is to obtain diamond/iron armor, or can silvefish even spawn past certain Z levels but what might be the case is that mining with armor on might be to costsly on your armor and it would be better to eat the damage unarmored and offload that on large amounts of food Saving the armor for highly damaging conflict with the unexpected creeper.
I don't clearly understand, and I am asking politely. What blocks do silverfish come out of? All of them? Even player placed? I could go muddling around looking for an answer, but I figured hoping for a kind answer from one of you would be more beneficial.

No idea, it could be only sand or any block in teh game. If it's only sand it's not much of an issue but if its' actually smooth stone then in the early game you will be getting a lot of damage. This assumes many things but since the game isn't out yet we can speculate and plan based on potential scenarios.
I'm sorry, I really need more details before I assume anything about the silverfish.
If someone would just upload footage of them from the PAX demo... :/
Hahahahaha.... If its only sand im gonna send a recruit (in multiplayer) to get some sand for me
There's only been a few occasions i've ever collected alot of sand as i dotn' tend to use alot of glass. I might use more now as there are the panes but really they are not that much different then teh preexisting thick block so i don't see myself using that many.
However if silverfish pop from dirt then early game will be much harder for me as i tend to dig into a hill or mountainside for my first home. It might pressure me to make a wood cabin or something.

All i can do is say what would your strategy be for dealin with a hostile mob that occasionally pops out of rocks, keep your armor on or leave it off when your digging. I'm not claiming anyting is solid just posing a hypothetical which may turn out to be pointless in time.
They spawn, apparently, in the new Stone Brick block. But when you spawn the block ID "97", it's a regular smoothstone block that's easier to break and spawns a silverfish when broken. they also, for some reason, decay over a while and the silverfish pop out. When a silverfish gets hurt, any nearby silverfish blocks will start breaking, spawning more silverfish. They have 10 hearts(********) and deal 1/2 hearts of damage at a regular semi-speedy rate.

I know for a fact they spawn as a "trap" in strong holds. If you break a floor block of stone brick in strongholds, there is a chance that silverfish will start emerging from the floor, leaving holes everywhere. They keep spawning until you leave the area or there is no more floor left in the small part of stronghold. Watch the Yogscast Strongholds and Giant Mushrooms video. Also, silverfish can spawn when digging stone blocks. They spawn when you break a "stone" block look-a-like. One way to tell if one will pop out is if the stone block can be broken without a pickaxe fairly quickly.

Any thoughts?
