This method does allow new biomes to generate, however it has its drawbacks. The chunks between new and old generation can (but not always) look terrible. It's similar to when you tried to play release with a beta 1.2 world.
For example. It is entirely possible for an area which was dessert in the old generator to be considered a snow area in the new generator. In this case if you had generated half of the dessert, then made this change and walked across the dessert it would litterally look like a straight line as the join from sand to snow covering. And thats if your lucky enough for the grounds to be at the same height in old and new generation. If you are not lucky it will be dessert, then a straight cliffface with a snow biome on top of it.
Just keep that in mind with this hack.
If you want to do some testing to see what I mean, check the seed of one of your existing maps, then make a new world with this snapshot and the same seed. Travel to the same location and look at it. There is a good chance that the new area will be totally different. Now imagine if half of that area was new chunks and half was old chunks. (If the two locations look the same do this test with a couple of other areas).

I know what you mean, and i have these in my single player world/ but don't really bother me (cant say so for others)
and if you noticed, I have a picture of the transition, i admit it isn't as harsh as half of a mountain, i did address it.
World itself: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25276804/World5.rar. I'm not familiar with world data NBT shows, but biome borders and materials of my base kind of show that it was created long ago. December 6, 2010, in fact.
I'm not trying to be a troll here, just was really bothered because I don't want to create a new map for my server and decided to check.

Hmmm ok thats cool, but i dont know why i couldnt find one in my old world, weierd.
Jeb officially stated (https://twitter.com/#!/jeb_ ) that you would need to generate a new one, I'm confused. Going to ask him.
Maybe it doesn't generate with generatorName: default_1_1 only, but generates with older worlds, which have generatorName: default?
i dont have any older wolds to test, so im in agreement with your test results, but when the new update officially comes out, we will see what changes are needed or not.

And I just found that my server world, created sometimes during Beta, had a generatorVersion 0 and generatorName default_1_1! If not for this thread, I'd continue to pointlessly look for jungle in it too. Still, it's confusing - do those two parameters change after server updates?

after loading with 12w03a server, they look like this, needing to be changed manually
transition
jungle
this trees leaves were different, so i cut it down. all i got was sapping's (regular)
I'm very attached to my world, dating back to beta 1.1. Thanks to you, it can now keep on livin, and it gets jungles too. My world is mostly 1.7.3-and-older terrain and the new biome layout of 12w03a actually suits it better!
New World Generated in 12w03a Snapshot
New World Generated in 1.1.0
Same 1.1.0 World after being loaded in 12w03a Snapshot
Instructions
change the generatorVersion from 0 to 1, and change the generatorName from default_1_1 to default

I also found this there
here you can see the transition between the 1.1.0 and 12w03a terrain
Sure thing, one sec.
Im not saying i don't believe you, but i tried for over an hour to find one without using NBT,
So....
Pics or it didn't happen
