Oh no! I punched a sheep without Sheers! NOTCH IS GOING TO KNOW! Wait, *reads notch's tumblr* "Naturally, the data sent will be fully anonymous, so it wouldn’t contain any session information or your user name, and it wouldn’t send any sensitive information that you might not want to share".
Dude what is he going to find out from just data, on how you play minecraft? This might help grow the game! Make minecraft better!
As well you CANNOT, create a poll on how people play minecraft. There would be WAY TOO MANY variables and options.
However this is going to crack down on all the minecraft hackers like the grief teams and stuff because their clients are going to be sending anonymous data to mojang and all it takes is a patch to make those mods unworkable.
If one was to be technical, Mojang actually already collects user information via the statistics, though they probably don't read them. Would people suddenly complain if Notch, Jeb, or anyone working at Mojang took a look as those numbers? I'm not implying anything with this post, it's a straight answer.
Well, first they make enderman to invade our world, then they put racist slang in the language, now they are collecting our info to do bad things!!!
So treacherous!!!
Snakes don't wear pants you know..
The skeptics would chill if we knew what kind of data they are trying to get. The way they worded the announcement was vague, so we know nothing,
here you go
This would work by having the game connect to minecraft.net and send some anonymous and non-private data about the game, such as current game mode (single player, multiplayer), operating system (windows? mac?), how long you’ve been playing for (so we know how long a game session is), and whether or not you’re playing the downloaded game, or the applet on the webpage.
Notch said exactly what he wanted, it was not vague, he went straight to the point and told us about what information he wanted.

No, he did not.

send some anonymous and non-private data about the game, such as ...
It does not say "Limited to this".
It says "Anything we consider anonymous/non private, at our own determination of what is anonymous/non-private".
That is the problem. People think it says one thing, and it in fact says nothing of the kind.
There is no actual indication of what they can and cannot collect.
That means, to the courts in the US, that you will have no expectation of data privacy.
Combined with Mojang being a business subject to government regulation the government can require that certain information be collected and forwarded.
Can't happen? Can't take your personal data? Just ask the Japanese Americans during WW2. If it happened once, it can happen again. Did you ever hear about the Clipper chip for spying on telephone conversations? Did you realize that the NSA/FBI have been able to spy on email for a very long time? Did you ever realize that ISP's and phone companies report information to the government now?
I am not being paranoid.
Our government (USA) refuses to honor the right of privacy and the right of anonymity.
As I said: I voted yes. I will give Mojang the benefit of the doubt. And if I ever find out that something else is going on, it gets blocked.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

This is my issue with the data Notch said he wants. "Such as" and "like" terms imply that the data that they are seeking resembles the data set named, but does not necessarily limit itself to that. It usually means that the items stated are a subset of the data that could be logged. If those were the only pieces Notch wanted, he could say "We only want these pieces..." and enumerate them then and there. That's not how he phrased it, so that's not how I'm taking it. If you folks want to blithely assume things without fully understanding what's said, that's your problem.
So I'm sure someone's now going to go off on how crazy that all sounds. Frankly, it's still my choice what data I give Notch about me. I want the choice up front, not later, and not forgotten if I borrow someone else's PC or use the web version (like the achievements currently are).
But how will it be saved? Once per installation, once for the user account? Will it ask me for permission, like most data collection tools are REQUIRED to do, or will it just assume I'm in unless I say otherwise? Notch hasn't addressed these concerns yet, and I don't like being roped into something without being asked.

Self report is terribly inaccurate and unreliable.
No, he did not.
