Basically, minecraft is a single player game. Multiplayer was an after-thought. Think about it, the game has ending credits, a final boss, tons of exploration, tons of crafting and mining, and just tons of features that you'd find in a single player game.
With that said, the lifecycle of a single player game is that you play it, and then you're done with it. Maybe you play it again if you like it.
Mojang knows this, and that is why they keep releasing new stuff to make the game shiny again instead of fixing smp glitches and insecurities. They leave all of that up to the modding communities.
Edit:
Apparently it's not obvious what problems minecraft has in SMP. Here's a short list:
FPS lag
zombe flymod
xray
worldedit or inventory hacks
pvp mods
spam macros
These are all bugs/exploits that Mojang has been failing to address. In order to fix these you need NoCheat, Hawkeye, mcbans, Orebfuscator, Essentials, and very active staff to constantly inspect players to detect any exploits/hackers.

This is nothing more than your opinion. Your cynical opinion. You have zero evidence to back up such a claim.
You have no idea what they are thinking. You just like to think you do.
It doesn't matter if mojang fixes those problems because there will always be players who make new problems. New hacks, new mods, new tactics for causing problems. So it is useless to fight them.
Not too mention; SMP is developed in such a manner that if you find the right group of people you don't need any anti-greifing plugins. Don't treat minecraft like a current gen first person shooter because it isn't one.
FPS lag and out of memory errors only happen if your computer/server isn't beefy enough. I have a server running with 256 megabytes of RAM and it's never had a problem. All those other ones are things Mojang isn't responsible for, so...

Yes, I am making an observation on the state of the game, and guessing at it's future based on past patches.
I am also raising a complaint as to the number of plugins/mods server owners have to install in order to make their server secure. As a result, most servers aren't secure.
If you don't agree with my observations, then good for you.
You basically said that because of an ending (which people yelled for) and a boss (again...) the game somehow turned into a single player experience. That's nonsense of the highest caliber.
They don't legally owe you a way to deal with people who are out to cause trouble.
That's your job.
Of course they don't owe me anything. There are numerous exploits on the client side that could easily be fixed server side, but instead we have to use mods to secure them. Finding the right mods for the job that don't severely impact your server performance (especially for large servers) is tough. It's not impossible, but most servers out there are insecure in some regard due to these exploits (in my personal experience).
Hats off to the modding community for making this game playable in SMP.

Dude, when you get a certification in Network Security and Application Development you can complain about the server not being secure. Now if you're referring to players being able to cheat in the server, that's not their job, it's the server admin's job. EA/DICE doesn't provide the software we use to manage our BF3 servers, so why do you think Mojang, being a much smaller company, should do that for you. Doesn't matter if it's BF3 or Minecraft, it's the Administrator's job to secure the server down and stop cheating, not the devs job.
The only issue you posted was with xray texture packs, but there isn't honestly a way to ban that unless Jeb wants to make the server scan the client's texture pack.
Worldedit and other such things are server/world add-ons for building. Not a hack [In the bad way at least], zombe's flymod is kind of a hack but . . . you know you might as well mention every other mod with flying anythings.
Also server lag/general FPS lag has s**t all to do with Mojang and they can't fix it. You know why some people get better FPS than others? Because it's the computer that makes the difference.
So yeah, i only agree with the xray texture pack issue, but in all honesty the only way to fix it seems far more time-consuming and inefficient than would be reasonable. Also, self-respecting servers could probably easily notice an xray texture pack user if they take the time to check.
This is the stupidest opinion I have read in awhile. Just to show you how serious I take this the important part of this post will be in bold:
IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONSUMER TO FINISH THE PRODUCT. Mojang "released" this game, it is THEIR responsibility to fix bugs in both single and multiplayer. At this point, personally, I'm about fed up with the lack of professionalism at Mojang.
Have you heard of the game Dead Island? It was super buggy when it was released too. You know what the company that made it did? THEY DELAYED DLC WHICH HAD ALREADY BEEN PLANNED TO FIX BUGS.
What does Mojang do in the same situation? THEY GET TIRED OF FIXING BUGS SO THEY DECIDE TO CREATE A NEW BIOME AND NEW MOB INSTEAD.
It's ****ing unprofessional and if I'd known it would turn out this way I would have pirated the game instead of giving them my money.

Doesn't matter. If you have broken stuff you need to fix it then.
Force-field pvp mods
zombe flymod
wolves
xray
spam bots
world-edit hacks
Duplication hacks

So you never run out of memory or get fps lag? Lucky...
Yeah Townships!
Actually, my FPS is usually BETTER when I play SMP.
I'm completely serious. If you have insecurities in your game, then you fix them. Doesn't matter if it's beta or not.
Yeah Townships!

And any FPS/lag issues you have are going to be on your end, not the game's. And there isn't really any more memory leak problems with the game. For an insight into how hard it is to make a memory leak read this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6470651/creating-a-memory-leak-with-java
