I tested it out by starting a new super flat survival word and dug a long tunnel There was indeed void fog, no longer black as others have said, but when I tried a similar thing in my main world, there was no fog to speak of. I thought that torches might dispel it, but it's just not there with or without torches. I'm not sure why it would be in the super flat and not in my main world.

I'm glad I'm not going crazy, but yeah, that's... really weird. If anything, I'd have expected it to have been the other way around.
Even as someone who hates void fog, I have no problem at all with a toggle. I don't want to restrict anything from anyone if they like it, just because I do not.
But I really hope if it comes back, it's as a toggle.
In all the topics about void fog, I've never seen anyone strongly defending it. There have either been people who loath it, or people who don't care one way or another. I could be wrong, but that's the way it seemed to me. I was one of the ones who really didn't care, but now that it's gone, I'm kind of happy.
Is everyone talking about the really dense, black void fog, or the newer thin, gray void fog?
The old fog was just a nuisance, but the gray fog I thought looked nice. It added atmosphere to the bottom of the world, and it wasn't at all distracting. It certainly didn't obscure vision. It just seems like everyone's talking about the old fog, but that stuff's been gone for a while now.
the only grey fog I see is the fog at the limit of the render distance.
the black soupy fog w/ particles was the one i had, and its just now gone after this snapshot, Ive never seen any alternative grey fog.
The alternative grey fog does appear, although it only seems to show up in Superflat. It may also just be that it's rare for you to be down far enough with vast enough caves to see it in survival (essentially, all of super flat is played down at the top of bedrock level or below).
I hope they remove depth and ocean fog altogether. Use optifine, remove depth fog, and then the underwater world, despite its lacking of many things, is absolutely BEAUTIFUL.
I'm definitely glad about this. If it worked like actual darkness, I may not have minded, but the implementation was just annoying and looked rather stupid in large rooms.
I wouldn't mind if it was a toggle-able option though.
