After downloading the new snapshot and playing on a smp game with my friend, I noticed mobs spawn in more groups, they seem to "group" together, making it a hell-lot harder to take them down, and skeles and creepers seem to be smarter with their attacks.
We were getting our asses kicked left and right (mostly him), and after realizing that the server difficulty was on EASY, I went "holy ****, mobs are actually a challenge now".
Before you say I suck, I used to play on hard mode or hardcore all the time for the fun of it, but now seeing this update, I'm afraid to go past Normal difficulty.
One thing to note: in multiplayer the lag gives mobs a major combat advantage. They get a couple blocks of more range and it's harder to kill creepers because if you back up at all they still explode.
I could punch everything to death in single player but in multi some things have me for lunch.
Mobs, however, at night, tend to be in a large spot on a hill. Start a new game in SSP and wait 'til night, then run forward. Make sure you're not in a Taiga or Swamp biome.

That is actually latency, the server actually puts the mobs closer to you than you're seeing them. Notice that if you're the host of the server they're the same as offline mode. This is why creepers still explode despite you being out of their "explosion range" because the server sees you much closer to creepers than you are in your client.

No, lag is caused by high latency. Or bad computers.
The difference is that latency is the property of time between pings between the client and server (usually measured in milliseconds) and lag is when latency is higher than a certain point. It's like the difference between "weight" and "heavy".

Edit: Okay, it's not uncertain, it's just that people misread what you wrote.

If mobs spawn in groups, it is a plugin.
Minecraft is not harder.
Also check out EasyJar! Works great with DLML.

Lag and latency are one in the same.

I fail to see the difference

Mobs have been spawning in groups since Indev . I remember in alpha you could see a group of 10 spiders in a single area.
