I've just bought 1.0 from Minecraft.net. Obviously it downloads 1.0, but when I force update it doesn't update any further. Not 1.2, not 1.5....nothing. Tried deleting the BIN folder, and forcing a new update. A little direction PLS. Help appreciated.
1.0 os the latest version out, its no longer beta, so starts again at 1.0

note: Then I mention a group of people in my posts, i mean the majority of information i have seen from that group, and my statement may not be accurate for every individual in that group.
Sorry man. Your up to date. 1.0 is the latest. Like every one has said. And if you don't know. (it could happen people) the term "Alpha and BETA" are used to describe beginning stages of a game, and it's development. Where Alpha is playable but really broken, and beta being less broken, but still messed up.

That's not what alpha and beta are at all. Alpha is when you add the core features to the game, the engine, the gameplay systems (like crafting/enchanting/alchemy/etc.) and make sure they work. Then, in beta, you add polish to them, you flesh them out, do user-acceptance testing, and make the game actually good. I think we're just now creeping into what you might call a beta phase for Minecraft. In another few years, it might be ready to be put on sale!

Don't worry, Minecraft was just released. The version you downloaded is the release version, beta 1.8 came before it.
Relax.
I don't think you should be talking.
Yeah, I know, Notch is pretty retarded for using version numbers greater than 1 for any alpha/beta build.
But......put....beta in....title.
Whaaaaaaaaaaa.

Only applies to minecraft, really.
Anyways, Notch did make the mistake of calling the beta versions 1.x, it is confusing for everyone except minecraft fans
