I highly doubt you are truly legit. I've played on at least 10 single-player maps 100% legit, and I always end up starving the first day. Why? Because it takes a long time to grow wheat, quite some time to cook enough steak/pork to restore the hunger bar, and there are so many things that reduce your hunger bar faster.
Go rant about giant mushrooms, at least you'd have a somewhat plausible argument.
I completely understand what you mean. I've wanted apple trees for so long. I love to farm in Minecraft and even raise my own animals. A new item to farm would have definitely been a great addition, but I don't like how apples were implemented. I hope that they don't approach cocoa beans the same way.

I've never starved on the first day because I'm not stupid enough to go sprinting out for new land, I collect supplies and food right away.

Kill a skeleton and use bonemeal on wheat. Even w/o doing that I usually go down to 3 energy the first day before the wheat finishes growing. Just walk around, try not to jump or sprint all the time.
Yes i Agree Apples Shouldn't Fall from trees it is to dumb. Maybe very rarely like the spawn rate of a pink sheep. Also if your a big fan of AntVenom this will make you FURIOUS like i am right now. He is doing a Hunt For the Golden Apple and this makes it to easy. Besides that it is fine if it barley spawns. I mean C'mon I like it if i barely does but 1 Apple a tree *rage face* FUUUUUUUU.
The way apples are able to collected now are the way I would have implemented them. Why bother adding a new type of tree?
@Bronze
How about we have rainforests with rare cocoa bean shrubbery? How's that for style points? I would rather find a bean in its natural habitat then in a chest. *Cough*zombie feathers*Cough*
It takes 72 gold ingots just to make 1 golden apple and a golden apple only regenerates your health for 30 seconds. It's really not that much of an inbalance. Also, a tree has about 64 leaf blocks on it. That is about 3 and a half trees to get 1 apple. Granted, if you really wanted to, you could go on a tree cutting frenzy and get some apples, but it's not really much to worry about anyway.
This is a step in the right direction by Jens. Very simple change that could have been added a very long time ago.
However will take more steps in the right direction to change my reservations about the direction Mojang and minecraft have taken in the last couple of months.
Thank you! I have been secretly hoping that apples could be gotten from trees for quite a while now. Not all of them mind you, i'd have a real hard time accepting them falling from the Birches and Pines...but, it's still better than only finding them in chests now and then. And on the issue of getting seeds from them...why not? We already have the means to farm our own beef and pork, why not get some seeds from an apple and plant an orchard? Heck, I can already do that in RL, why not here?
Sure, I might be able to restore a few hunger points with the apples I might get from cutting down trees over time, but by the point that I have enough to be significant, I'd have countless other and more efficient sources of food.
I don't even use normal trees for my farms. Birch trees have a consistent size, so I don't waste time hunting down all the wood hidden within a mass of leaves.
Well as far as I can see, and forgive me if its just my nostalgia talking, but I think you should only be able to get apples in vanilla minecraft the same old ways: Strongholds, dungeons (even though you can only find golden ones), and killing notch. Trees defeats the purpose of apples: to be rare and elusive.

Apples are less effective of a food item than pork/steak/chicken, so I don't see why they would have to be so rare.

I don't think the purpose of apples was ever to be rare and elusive.
I think you're misunderstanding Mojang's intentions with this. If you did you wouldn't be complaining.
They were done that way simply to add them in the game. While I agree that an apple tree might have been a little cooler, I like the idea of having them simply drop from normal trees but be rather rare.
I don't see much of a reason to complain. Keep in mind that if you cut down, say, ten trees, you'd have a pretty good change of getting an apple. So if you have a large tree farm then it'll be balanced out.
Now I just wish they could be dropped from birch trees, unless they intended it that way since everyone uses them for tree farming.
Before I'm going to start responding, I'll just take the time to say that after 1.0 we're getting FANBOY SYNDROME.
You know when you post an idea about a game that wasn't meant to be offensive but more or less a train of thought for people to discuss? And then when people just post dumb crap on top on the basis of "complaining", "whining", and "stupid ideas" without taking said idea into consideration? Yeah, there you go. Sounds a whole lot like what I saw when I used to go on the COD forums, and that's not a good sign.
So, I'll only state these once.
-We do, believe it or not, as the consumer, have the right to express our opinions on the game. You call it complaining. Common sense used without blinding fanaticism calls it constructive criticism that can be used to improve the game if discussed in detail. As corny as all that sounds, it's true, and you can't just tell me to shut the hell up on the basis of whining because you don't want to hear me talk about the game negatively. Of course if I was raging about pigs not being able to wear condoms on their snouts, there would be a reason for me to STFU, but I have a legitimate concern.
-"Not using it" solves nothing. I'm not saying that I'm having an issue over using the items or not. I'm saying that the game would be overall better with said feature removed/added. Therefore, "Don't use it" holds no weight. I say abortions are bad, you say just don't have any. There's your logic right there.
Now with that already hopeless attempt to save our forum from Fanboy Syndrome out of the way, I will actually talk about...apples.
The main issue I see with them is that by cutting wood you are also gaining a food source, making it a lazy option to get wood and food. It's not GAMEBREAKING, but it certainly means you'll be getting a lot of food and wood at the same time which shouldn't be the case. You should have to pick and manage your time;food, or wood?
And there is of course the fact that trees could have been implemented. This could have been a great chance to actually make a difference among the axes besides speed and durability. If picks can mine different materials, why can't axes?
Even if I sounded it in the OP, I wasn't at all mad until I read some of the crap here. Don't be a fanboy.
I don't see why it really matters. Apples will not be easily hoardable, and even if they were, so what? As you said, chickens and cows are pretty much an abundance in every biome known to man, not to mention that you can spawn chickens almost at will by hucking their eggs at a wall.
What's one more food item? I don't see how this is a problem or gamebreaking.
Minecraft, despite popular belief, is not "hard." It was never hard.
Therefore, adding apples cannot "make the game easier".
You're trying to add difficult to a sandbox.
I agree I don't understand how apples are exactly game breaking.
Well, I just went out to try to get some apples and I had to knock out all the leaves of 4 trees. It took seemingly forever to find one. It's an extremely slow food source, I just think it's nifty. It is far from being game breaking and what you call fanboys are people who reasonably like everything they added.
Apples would be a great food source for beginners or a new world.
