More longerer version:
I have been playing Minecraft on and off since July 2010, never had any problems with it. I don't know what the last version I played was but I would guess 1.7 or 1.8, I had no trouble at all with them.
After 1.0 was released, I let the client update itself, and all was good... for about five minutes. Suddenly I'm getting massive lag bubbles (this is local, I haven't tried multiplayer at all) where Minecraft freezes for ~2-15 seconds, every few seconds, which rendered the game unplayable. This stuttering was most infuriating, as my machine is more than capable of playing Minecraft. This machine is running a 64bit version of Windows 7.
After much faffing about and forcing updates a few times and being no better off, I checked out the options in the game.
I have Render Distance set to Far, always have done. I went through the options and when it cycled back around to Far, I had a warning displayed stating that 64bit Java is recommended and 32bit was installed. That turned out to be it; after uninstalling the 32bit version and installing the 64bit JRE, the problem has disappeared entirely. (I get split second lag bubbles occasionally, usually when moving to new parts of the world, but this is normal and acceptable)
I haven't seen this information anywhere else, hence starting a new topic for it. Hope this helps someone else; there seem to be 18 mentions of "unplayable" in the "Official 1.0 Pre-release bug thread" and a lot of them seem to describe this problem.
I'd love to get 64bit Java, however I don't think my computer is compatible...
I feel like that is the case with a lot of other people who complain about it too.
I've got an old Windows xp OS, is it compatible? I'm looking at the page right now: Compatibiliy
but I'm still not sure.
Also, google turns me in circles on where to actually download the damn RE, so... direct link?
This is also in the wrong forum, even though it is very helpful.
Just sayin...

I broke up with my ex girl. Here's her numbah........
SIKE! DAS DA WRONG NUMBAH!
Its got nothing to do with that. If your operating system is 64 bit, then you not only can, but SHOULD get 64bit Java. If you have a standard (if 64bit systems isn't standard now) 32bit operating system, then you won't benefit a lot from it.
I guarantee it's not lol. This thing is old as time.
I'm getting a Macbook soon, how well do those run Minecraft...?
