Yep. Minecraft sure is dead now that I have this quest I can go on during periods where surviving and building get a little worn out for a time. Yep, deader then a doornail since it's not actually the end of anything just yet another thing you can choose to do if you feel like it. Oh and you can go right back to surviving and building when you're done with that quest. Yep, an awesome boss battle sure doesnt add to the accomplishment of building your mighty fortress, village, tower, pixel art, ect.
Ok now that I'm done dripping with sarcasm I'll fill you in on a secret. Minecraft is not dead...not by far. If you feel you cant play the game after beating a dragon then thats an issue you have, not the game. I certainly dont have that issue, not by a long shot. In fact I dont even see the dragon as a "I NEED TO DO THIS NOW" kinda thing. I see it as being an activity I can do when I dont feel like just building exploring and surviving but I still want to play minecraft.
When I kill the dragon I will go right back to exploring, building and surviving without missing a beat. I am far from the only one capable of this.
Next time you go around proclaiming the death of something in your topic title, please be sure to add "to me" as well.
I partly agree, Minecraft to me was one of those games that had no aim other than to craft the world into what you wanted it to be. Now with a boss fight and an "End" it does feel like the game is pushing you in that direction to follow a storyline/aim/objective set by the developer. It's not long a sandbox game in my eyes, more of a RPG.
But you're not being pushed to it unless you choose to, I could happily get enchanting (I don't really care for the End) from the Nether and conquer a Stronghold. I just simply don't go into the portal or finish it, or I could even break it if I really didn't want to.
Is Skyrim any less open-ended due to it having a main quest? No.
I've never been to the end and will probably never go there, because i don't care.
I would have prefer that spent time on features that really fit to minecraft... because minecraft was all about mine... and craft!
Who made Minecraft? You, or Notch?
Is Minecraft released yet? No. Hence, Minecraft 1.0 is what Minecraft is. No matter what Notch puts in (Even if it's a giant purple pimp hat) it fits in.
And not to mention...This has been in the works for a year or longer.

Notch on his twitter: "bugs that feel wrong get fixed"
Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.
Have you played a game called Grand Theft Auto? Interesting game series...the games have a large sandbox world with an endgame and story where you can do almost anything you wanted to in it's world especially after you beat the endgame point.
'The End' only really gives the illusion of an end to Minecraft... You can still go and continue what you were doing, imagine that killing the Ender Dragon is just one of many goals, but I think that calling it the /End/er Dragon, it being in the /End/, and having the story and credits makes it feel like the end of your game. If there were no credits, story, or anything related to an "End", for instance if it was called something like the "Obsidian Dragon" and the portal just put you back in the stronghold, we wouldn't have these complaints. It's essentially the same thing, it's just that all these references to an "end" make it feel like one.
Don't think of the Enderdragon as an end to minecraft. Just think of it as
a rare resource. Find it, pound it, loot it, continue. If it said
"KILLTEH DRGON IN 10 WEEKS OR WE KILL YOU AND DELTE UR WURLD FOREVR HAHA!!1!!11!!"
I'd see where you are coming from. But it doesen't.
I think that the OP forgot to mention that beating the Enderdragon is completely optional, and there's no reward besides EXP for beating it. Which is easily obtainable everywhere else. You don't need to play with optional content. Cry more?
First off, im not hating minecraft, but after the official realease its dead.
why? The Ender Dragon.
Be4 this, Minecraft was a game of only surviving. and now, its not. The thought of bosses are cool, but after killing the Ender dragon, i feel that the game is over. its sad as watching a goat cry at tuedays, but its like, wtf Notch?
What do u guys think of this?
Everthing in Minecraft is...
OPTIONAL.
Its optional to go to the End.
If you want to go to the End, its optional to kill the dragon or not.
The dragon won't be a big nuisance as it can't exactly kill you.
The "End" credits aren't even an End Game. You can still keep playing after the credits are over. And not only that its easier to navigate the End without the dragon trying to rape you.
That being said. Everything in this game is "OPTIONAL" and not only that it's still a sandbox game. So why don't you guys saying "OMG ITS AN RPG GAME NOW" shut up? Its still a sandbox game, it will always be a sandbox game, and I don't think Notch ever intends to make it anything else then a sandbox game. If he did I would quit Minecraft too.
OPTIONAL = SANDBOX.
SANDBOX = FUN.
UNOPTIONAL = RPG
RPG = LAME

"The awful thing about the internet is you're unable to determine whether a quote is true or not." -George Washington
The fact that you can continue playing after "the ending" doesn't change the fact that it's still an ending. It's pretty clearly intended to have the same sort of "conclusive" effect that normal endings do, that is, make you feel accomplished and like you are done with everything and go outside for once. Sure, you can just go back and keep doing stuff, but it doesn't feel quite right going back to the normal pace of a game right after you just reached and passed the climax point.
Also, the "it's optional" argument is heavily overused (this is coming from someone who is affiliated with neither of this forum's "factions" regarding the recent updates [the factions are the "whiners" vs. the "white knights"]). I'm not going to go into detail about it because nobody is going to stop copying/pasting it everywhere they step anyways.
EDIT: The second post after this one already reuses that cliche, what did I just tell you?

I have to say, the op is a complete and utter loser.
First he says the Minecraft is dead. No.
Then he says that the Ender dragon is the end of the game. No. If you read the text before the credits after beating the dragon, you would find out that Notch and Jeb were talking metaphorically. They said they would hope that they would be able to expand onto the game even farther, adding more bosses, more dimensions, etc.
First of all, no, the game isnt dead. Everyone and their grandmother plays it. This is a known fact. Saying otherwise simply because you dont like an (optional) feature makes you sound like an absolute dumbass.
Secondly, yes, these new features are *FREAKING OPTIONAL*. YOU DONT HAVE TO DO THEM. Dont like The End? DONT GO THERE. Dont like potions? DONT MAKE THEM. DUH. And really, *what* exactly is such a PROBLEM with all of this? In every single damn one of these absolutely braindead hyper stupid moron topics of absolute idiocy, not ONE person has given an actual GOOD arguement as to WHAT is wrong with all of these features. Usually it just boils down to "ZOMG RPGS IN MY MINECRAFTS!!!!1111THREE" which is, I'm sorry to tell you, NOT A REASON.
I mean, REALLY. You dont like the Enderdragon thing because "it makes you beat the game and then the game is over". ....what. Ahhh, I get it, what you ACTUALLY mean is the part where you beat the game AND THEN THE GAME JUST CONTINUES LIKE NORMAL, right? That's what you MEANT to say, because saying anything else is.... very.... dumb.
All of the stuff that made you get into and enjoy the game in the FIRST place is still there. Not a SINGLE aspect was ever removed. YOu can play it just as you used to, though you may have to put up with the occaisional Enderman or Cave Spider if you're playing on non-peaceful.
And do you even think of WHY this new stuff was added? It's because not everyone wants to JUST build stuff. Some of us, myself included, while we like the building and all that, ALSO need an actual challenge. This has been the ENTIRE DAMN PURPOSE of the adventure update. It's the REASON why it's there. None of it is being removed simply because YOU dont like it.
In other words, quit your whining. Stop complaining over ENTIRELY OPTIONAL features that do, in fact, not cause the removal of any aspect of the game.
No, RPG's are not lame. Millions of people that have bought TW2 and Skyrim disagree.
I'm pretty sure he was just mocking people who use the "rpg" argument.

Actually now that Minecraft is being released, it'll grow even more.
Think about it, for the past month the game has been in a prerelease/constantly updating state. This means that mods can't really be updated. I mean they can, but when they are -boom theres another pre release that breaks them. Now that minecraft is being released, the modding potential for this game is going to be incredible.
People can mod more bosses in the game, just look at the Aether. You don't have to think of it as a final boss really...

Stick with 1.8.1.
PlanetSide 2 Megathread because why not?
The game isn't dead, it doesn't stop once you beat the dragon, stop being childish about something you don't need to do.

...i wish i could backhand every one of you.
Pretty much this.
Nope. You know why? It's because Notch knows best. It's his game, you don't like it? Too bad.
