As most of us know, the enchantment "silk touch" is suppose to give back the same block that you destroy with it, though obviously it shouldn't work for everything, so I decided to test out just what it can work on and here are the results.
Does work:
Mycelium (mushroom grass)
Melon
Glowstone
Clay
Ice (Still leaves water behind, glitch?)
Lit furnace (Glitch?)
Bookshelves
Smooth stone
Double slabs
Ores (coal, diamonds, redstone, etc)
Glass/Glass panes
Grass
Spawner (Will be removed)
Enderstone (White stone in the "End Zone")
Mushroom blocks (All blocks look like the inside, No specific colors like red or brown)
Gravel (kinda useless)
Obsidian(even on non-diamond tools)
Silverfish block (silverfish still spawns but you get the spawn block)
Glowing Redstone
Enchanting Table
Doesn't Work:
Cake
Snow layer
Web
Tall Grass/Dead shrub
Stairs
Tilled soil
Vines
Crops
Boat
Stone bricks (gives back just stone bricks, even when used on cracked or mossy)
Unlit redstone torch
Also, the lit furnace block will revert to a regular furnace once used.
Redstone has two types: Lit and Unlit. If you mine the lit version and the unlit version, they do not stack. Once placed, the lit version reverts to the unlit version very quickly.

Well it isn't for use purpose's, mostly just a cheap alternative to glowstone. Though it will likely be "fixed"
IMO, enchanting is a crappy alternative for more interesting things. Silk touch - why not make freezer, grass seeds? Underwater bonuses - why not make diving gear? This game is becoming worse and worse...
Enchant is an interesting addition to the game...however, in terms of silk touch? I would have to agree, having those things would make it much more interesting.

Making things like diving gear would be more fun then enchanting.
Diving helm pattern.
Jack hammer. Bookshelf = Piston, Red Shroom = redstone repeater.
Silk touch should give stair blocks back, it upsets me that it doesn't. Also, I imagine the getting regular stone bricks with a silk touch pick is a glitch, something to do with all 3 stone bricks having the same item ID with different damage values.
why would it be? You get obsidian from mining with a normal diamond pick anyway.
Unless you meant silk touch on a lesser pick, though from what i've heard its even rarer on lower grade items and i don't see the point since it would take 45 seconds instead of 15. Though I can add it for accuracy's sake.
I think you should add my observation about mossy/cracked stone brick. Definitely seems like a glitch but does qualify as "not working" with Silk Touch, though in a way unlike any other blocks.

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Lava/water source blocks
Bedrock (unbreakable)
Ender portal frame (unbreakable)
Nether portal
Fire
If I've missed anything or made any mistakes, feel free to correct me.
Edit:Side note, Silk touch and Fortune do not work together.

A pickaxe without the Silk Touch enchant works as expected by mining mossy from mossy, etc.
chests? I'm not sure why it would matter, even breaking a chest with your hand gives you a chest back.

I really doubt that'll happen, if anything you'll lose your items, lol.

I know, was just mentioning that silk touch doesn't work on them.

Also, what tool did you use on the snow covering? It might work using a shovel.
I used a pick but honestly its the enchant that's important, since I used a pick on clay and grass and it worked fine.
As for silverfish blocks...I need to test that.
Edit: Wow...it actually works on silverfish blocks. If you break it, it spawns a silverfish but you still get the silverfish block.

Yes, but since you can only recover snowballs when using the shovel, then maybe it would work with the shovel.
Again I doubt it matters but I'll be willing to test it out, give me a moment.
Edit: tested, doesn't work. You get 1 snowball.
Edit: on a side note...silk touche and fortune do not work together, silk touch overrides it.

yes this is intentional because you could place and re-mine it to exponentially increase your amount of rare blocks in a small amount of time
