Why? There's no deadline other than what you place on yourself, Notch and Mojang. Half the features are halfassed and are shallow in what they do.
I understand this is a sandbox/creative game but that doesn't mean you don't need to have a focus IN DEVELOPMENT. Sure, I'll give you that Minecraft has come a long way since it's beginings but doing a code freeze now feels unprofessional and makes it seem like you guys just don't feel like working on minecraft anymore.
A major thing that has this problem are NPCs. What was the point of their addition? They literally don't do anything other than wander around. They don't even DROP anything. There's no reason for their existance. This is incredibly lazy and unprofessional.
All I'm saying is that Mojang should at least flesh out features when they add them before flitting off like a bird with ADHD on to the next shiney thing.

I'll do better when I'm getting paid. Hell, there's already people who are doing better for FREE.
Notch already clarified, its not a "code freeze" its a "feature freeze". They won't be adding new things until after minecon, just working on stuff that is already there. So they are going to be focussing on NPC's, dragons, The End, enchanting, potions, and all the previously found bugs, to clean everything up before putting Minecraft in a position where someone could say "I don't like this, give me my money back" and they would be obliged to (which currently they don't have to do, because its a beta).

If only there was a way to ensure this. Maybe some sort of "freeze", where you stop adding features and focus on bug fixes and refinements.
this has been planned for a while and it was made to ensure a stable release which includes fixing lag and bugs. if it makes the game more playable i see no reason why they shouldnt for full release
I hope they fix the terrain generation before this proposed freeze. I doubt notch actually runs around in his worlds and so is unlikely to notice how utterly lame, boring and repetitive 1.9 terrain is..
Unprofessional, you say? Fixing bugs is unprofessional? They've added all these new features. There are a ton of bugs associated with them. Would you rather play a game with lots of cool stuff that doesn't work correctly, or would you rather play a game with a few cool features that you know won't crash your game or corrupt stuff? I haven't downloaded 1.9pre because I'm waiting for the finished, more stable official release. Calm down, get your facts straight and then comment.

to op: its to fix the bugs where is the problem?? honestly like everyone else is saying why say its lazy when he is fixing all the bugs make the game more stable? hell how do you know within the code freeze time that there not working on the unfinished features?
Notch said, that the code freeze means, that they won´t implement new features.
Fixing and completing already implemented features is something they still will do as far as i understand it.
So let´s just wait and see and i think they won´t dissapoint us^^

OH alright then that's not as bad. I thought a code freeze was NO NOTHING UNTIL WE RELEASE THE GAME FULLY. Which is very bad for obvious reasons.
Can a mod delete/lock the thread or something?

Alot of people stupidly believe this for some reason. :dry.gif:
The coding may make mods easier to be compatible with each other....so it works both ways. ("Better coding, better efficiency on your computer, less bugs)
I can see whatever is going to be cleaned up, I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing mods which can do fantastic things once the polished version comes out.
But yeah, while they could have released a 1.9, well its kinda too near till minecon, may as well go all the way and finish the job.
you can probably ask a mod to do that. i did and they deleted it for me (i asked alblaka (Industrial Craft Creator) just because he seemed pretty nice.
Code Freeze means a more stable Minecraft, possibly higher FPS and lower system requirements. What can possibly be so bad about that? They aren't halting development altogether, just adding features for now. Instead, they are focusing on improving existing code to run smoother, etc. How is this at all a bad thing? Minecraft has needed this for a while now IMO.
I feel good about the feature freeze. With the exception of 1.6 (which aside from fleshing out gameplay by fixing gameplay bugs, was a complete failure), there haven't been any attempts to make what's in place stable. I'm hoping that they finally look at the long term issues that haven't been acknowledged for a while (like ghast fireballs not creating fire, but this may have already been fixed), and they actually look into making the thing run faster and more stable.
In the spirit of this thread, I feel like bitching too. Why call it 1.9 pre-releases if we are NEVER getting a 1.9 release at all? Half the "features" we were promised over the course of the last year and some months have never come to be. Biggest of these is multi-threading. I see people in here defending Mojangs ******** with "oh they are going to make the game more stable and run better". This would be achieved if they'd finally implement threading into the game (and no it is not hard to do either; you literally add thread definitions to any object creating snippet of code, 2 lines max per object class). Most people have at least a dual core, if not 6 cores like myself. Running the game at half to 1/6th its potential is extremely frustrating since this IS the current bottleneck as far as how well the game operates.
I realize we all opted in to this mess by buying the game early, but don't promise a patch if you aren't going to deliver it before the full release of the game. I don't feel like being either stuck on 1.8.1 for a few months or this shitty pre4 for another month. Give us a real patch and spend the next month putting in real updates like multi-threading.

Thread's over, folks. We have a winner. Move along, move along, single file please...

Also you used a double negative in your post.
