I don't understand the dislike of pre-releases. Either you don't like them, and no-one makes you download it so how is it effecting you? Or you like playing with all the new features and therefore you must like the pre-release otherwise why did you get it?
Seriously, how can you say you don't like the pre-releases but still keep playing them? And if you don't play them, how is it affecting you in any way?
This pre-release argument makes no sense to me at all. But that's just my opinion
This board is a vocal minority of beta participants at 807,436 members. Generously add a half or even double that for lurkers, and you have 1.8 to 2.2 million players left who aren't making daily posts putting Notch up on a pedestal, nor are they posting to have him lynched from that same pedestal.
I would wager that most of the 3.5 million-ish paid beta participants who still play Minecraft are not anything like the message board warriors on this board that think their perspective singularly represents the views of the overall Minecraft community.
The silent majority of the Minecraft players are happily digging away in 1.8.1 and either don't care or don't know about the 1.9 prereleases. They will upgrade when the little button on their screen tells them to.
Aren't those people stupid? Unlike the enlightened souls here bitching about Notch or nominating him for sainthood on a daily basis, they're out having fun playing a game.
I know you don't understand a thing about making videogames, but pre-releases are a great way to get feedback to make final versions better. That's the reason they exist, and this isn't something new. Pre-releases come from a long time ago, it's just now they're public, so now not only Mojang's staff plays them, they noticed with all that "leak" on 1.8 pre-release that it really works to make game better, because that way they can add some stuff and people will check it, see if they like it or not, see if it's bugged, then, that version's "final" release will work better.
Since it's not mandatory to download pre-releases, a lot of people will prefer to wait for 1.9 to be released, and, thanks to all this pre-releases, they will get a really improved version.
But 1.8 stable is still a "pre-release" of Minecraft v 1.0. There is no real difference except that it is a lot less cleaned up. 1.8 "stable" is still super buggy in itself.
I still play 1.8.1, and the problem with the pre-releases is exactly what I said earlier in the thread: they're mixing things up, stirring a full pot vigorously and spilling the contents everywhere. It makes a huge mess of things. I would go as far as to say that if there were no pre-releases as a whole, there would be a lot less complaining and such. To me, it seemed to skyrocket, with a broken tail fin, swerving every which way, jostling up the people (players) inside.
Excuse my double analogy, but it might make my last post a bit more clear on why I think it's a bad idea to have pre-releases.
EDIT: This should make my possible suggestion crystal clear:
Few days ago - v1.9 pre4
Oct 18th - code freeze, v1.9 stable released.
Oct. 25th - instead of 1.10pre1, make 1.9.1 with the bug fixes, etc.
Nov. 1st - instead of 1.10pre2, make 1.9.2 with the bug fixes, etc.
Continues till official release date, Nov 18th.
Yo dawg, I heard you like beta, so I put a beta in your beta so you can test while you test.
Stop that, drinking coffee and loling don't go together well. mmhmmm
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?
So the very anticipated 1.9 has yet another pre-release, 4th to be precise but isn't that going a bit far? Personally the way I see it, we are beta testers for the upcoming release of the full version. So on that note, we are here to let known the issues and bugs of the game as well as our general impressions. So what purpose is it that 1.9 has been on hold with only pre-releases? A beta within a beta? What is the point? I'd rather see it just get released when they have it somewhat up and ready and then do the appropriate bug fixes as per normal. I understand nobody likes too many bugs, but that's the life of a beta tester.
1.9 is going to be full game they want us to check for bugs in the end and with enchanting
the way i see it,they're allowing their fans/playerbase to help them create/test/work out bugs for the game we all love.
they're having fun, and are allowing anyone who is willing to play with them during this period of trial & error, creativity, and exploration to have fun along side with them. yes, there are bugs, but who has seriously gone into one of the pre-releases with any illusions that there wouldn't be? with the amount of content that has/is being released in the last few months that has drastically changed (and, in my opinion, improved with focus) our beloved MC, well...
if you want to experiment before the official release- go forth and have fun.
if you wish to wait until the official release is out of 1.9++ (as I am), then watch the released videos, read the forums, glance with envy at the images that are proffered by others, and know it won't be much longer.
Each pre release becomes buggier and buggier. It's to the point where they just forget **** "Ooops left those glass pillars in, silly me". The development isn't even taken very seriously.
Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that it isn't an official release, so it really doesn't matter that much.

You have one thing right in that is that I am not a game developer, but on that note, I have been been beta testing games for many years now of many sorts. And in my experience as a beta tester, there has been no such thing as a pre-release in the manner of this game. Content does get added and bugs get fixed over time. I can though understand having a pre-release of a final product or right before the next official update, but only to make sure of it's stability and find what bugs need to be ironed out.
I'm not saying its not a good idea, I'm just saying that beta testers 'jobs' are to notify the developers of the bugs to be fixed hence the reason its a beta. So people will complain of most updates and funny enough, there has been many complaints of EVERY update that has been released. So why is it a problem now to release another official update knowing that there will be bugs like every other update and just deal with it like normal?
Its unprofessional- Most ( good ) video game creators do not go like ''olol here is a pre-release 2 a major updaet''. They just make it, kill all the bugs, and release. That is how Minecraft should be.
Its beta- The idea of a pre-release in a beta game is outright retarded. It's beta, people should expect bugs.
If it's a huge update (like the adventure update) then pre-releases are a good excuse for way too many bugs, with so many features in an official update would make it look all bad and buggy so I don't mind a beta in a beta.
