I agree, the new biomes are really boring. They should have snowcapped mountains and bring beaches back. They could add glaciers to the ocean biome. Also, the idea of shipwrecks is really cool :biggrin.gif:
Having a set of oceanic biomes, rather than just one Ocean biome, would be very nice. Oceans being entirely barren and in need of some kind of content probably distracted me from the idea that was brought up earlier about desert and wetland diversity being applied to oceans as well. The oceans we have now are temperate, ocean diversity would be nice (in the same way that we have arboreal diversity with several kinds of forest).
There could be the temperate oceans we have, plus an 'arctic' variety with icebergs polar bears and walruses, and the one that I think a lot of people look forward to, tropical ocean, with corals and abundant small sealife like crabs, jellyfish, and all manner of little colorful fishes.

i for one am real tired of all my deserts being so flat. a few versions ago you'd have rolling hills and even cliff faces in deserts, but now they're all flat.
I recently thought about how forest biomes could be improved and I found this picture:
This looks amazing imo. Mountains are one of the most important things that make the landscape varied, as you can see in this picture. Every biome should at least have a possibility to be mountanious. If you try to imagine how much the other biomes could be improved, you'll realize that the current terrain generation isn't nearly finished.
I have never seen pine trees generate like that, truly breathtaking.
Personally I'd like to see more development go into the snowy regions of the world; and weather. I would like snow biomes to be more dangerous; the glitch that causes falling snow in these areas to destroy track, torches, and redstone is a step in the right direction. At least, exclusively in my opinion. But I would also like to see more weather revamps; we have thunderstorms for rainy regions; why not a snow storm for tundra? We have a breath bar for underwater, why not a 'warmth' for cold places. I know these are only personal desires but I would like trying to survive in a frozen waste land to be more challenging then a temperate forest.
I mentioned this in a few other threads, but I think a solution that might work for everyone (or most people) is to use the world type option to chose the size and frequency of biomes (including using one biome exclusively or leaving one or more out entirely) as well as changing the heights of sea level (I don't mean that the map is now more than 128 tall, but that average ground level can be changed).
People who want it the way it was before 1.8 could decrease the size of biomes, and people like me who don't like the wind waker oceans could nerf them or make them go away. If you want a lot of room to build up, decrease mean sea level, or if you want to build an epic dwarven kingdom, increase it to 128 and have caves all the way up.
The most important change that the terrain generator needs is to STOP changing it, so that maps don't keep getting messed up.
At the very least, the old generation code should stay along side the new, and the world saves should be versioned, so the correct generator can be used (unless you force it to use something else).

I'm not sure how large a portion of the game is the world generating code, but I would suspect its substantial. Having the last several versions included would likely make the game files much more cumbersome. I do agree that the world generating portion of the code needs to be finalized in a much better state than it currently is. We can only hope that it will receive a major overhaul for 1.1 so that worlds don't have to be so regularly replaced in the future.

I think that biome generation & terrain generation should be sort of separate.
Generate oceans/valleys/lakes/mountains/plains/hilly areas, then a temperature/humidity map.
Then use elevation + temperature + humidity to fill in the biomes. Using elevation you could then have forested hills & swampy valleys, or dense jungle covered mountains, or snowcapped mountains.
With this sort of thing, even with large biomes (personally I'd like to have HUGE biomes, I still find stuff like having 3 swamps, 2 deserts, and 4 forests in a single square kilometer is a little odd.
Ideally I'd like to be able to have minecraft's terrain/biome generation mirror the real world as much as possible, but in a smaller area.
I have the impression that Notch stopped paying much attention to these forums when Curse Gaming took over. I don't think he's logged in or posted for about 6 months. I'll post about the results on reddit in the near future.
@JulianDraak I've thought of similar approaches that divided the generation of a heightmap and then applied biome data to it for surface geology and flora/fauna. One major issue with that kind of approach is water. Particularly with swamps.

The lack of beaches is something very bad on the 1.8 world generation. Also, the biomes are very boring, and the transition is horrible. Instead of taking the game to rpg direction, Mojang should work in biomes again, since there is a lot of things that have to be better.
No loafing.
I want them back.
I think he means an iceberg.
I made this to represent it in MC, but would be better with a part underwater and maybe bigger:
I like it, would be good to see it implemented.

i really miss mountainous deserts
I feel sad for everyone who will never experience the extremely random world generator...

hahaha lol.
i think that the ocean biome in particular needs more content and items etc.
also the same with the desert biome!

Exploring just isn't fun anymore with all biomes looking the same :sad.gif:
