Except you can't use water streams. Only still water.
Finite water would definitely be a problem.
Water does stream with finite and can carry items if you concerned about maintaining your water conveyer. However you now have the additional challenge of draining the water from your water conveyor's end point or recycling it back to the nexus of the conveyor so there is no easy way out. Also water conveyer's are only a critical component to contraption tinkerers and not all minecraft players, many do'nt use them.
Something alone the lines of water similar to in the finite liquids mod would be nice, if it was handled a little better. It would make cauldrons a lot more valuable as well, although then I would argue that cauldrons should hold more water, perhaps 6 bottles and 2 buckets.
Also, I would appreciate systems in game that beg you to use aqueducts and make you seriously consider building near oceans and lakes and rivers. I would also like to have to drink water to survive, and for rain to put out torches. I know, lots of silly ideas.
Channeling water and controlling it requires more intelligence then collecting 6 iron and digging a 2x2x1 hole.
That wasn't his point. His point was that smart people realize that an infinite water spring allows them to use the two buckets to bring the water to a remote location, create the spring, use the buckets to start their intelligently designed waterflows, and then refill the buckets before moving on. Further, the infinite water spring trick/gimmick allows the player to create their own lakes that don't have moving currents just like the ones generated by the game.
It's basically smart to use those 2x2x1 water springs you seem to despise.
INFINITE WATER SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE GAME. ITS DUMB AND PONITLESS AND MAKES WATER NOT RARE OR USEFUL AT ALL. BECAUSE WE HAVE ENDLESS WATER
How does "infinite water" make water not useful?

Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?

Infinite water makes water not useful? Water should be rare? Really?
I personally use water so that lava pools can be easily (somewhat) pacified. In fact, water is so stupidly useful that I carry a bucket of it wherever I go. Also, water should only really be rare in deserts, which it already is.
Personally, I prefer infinite water over finite...mostly because I don't understand what it exactly entails. I understand that you can't make infinite water sources but is that all? Anyways, on topic, I don't think that cauldrons will make it so that we can't make infinite source springs. I've just tried it and you can't get water back into buckets from cauldrons...OP is wrong on that front.

Finite water would KILL minecraft. Atleast for the people who like to play it in a smart kind of way.
Whatever the case he made the argument that there is a "smart way" to play and it is exclusive to having and unlimited water source that acts like a field generator and not an actual fluid.
Seems absurd to me as my experience with finite water required me to thick ahead and plan how i would channel water to have access to it without have to run back and forth with 10 buckets to a nearby lake.
If you are to irrigate crops it's not enough to just use some dirt and dig a trench then lay your buckets, you must CHANNEL in your source water from one point and make sure there is no flow interruption. In addition you must make sure that you can control that flow to ensure that your do not flood the crops. More thinking is required then simply mining 6 iron and never needing to deal with water acquisition again. The way the water works now is simplistic and forgivable to error which reduces the need for mental deliberation or consideration of the terrain with high precision to ensure geo-engineering projects dont' result in disasters and cavern flooding which then must be pumped out.
NO. Finite water would be REALLY DAMN ANNONYING. Especially for filling in artificial lakes and stuff. And look at a swimming pool for instance. You could take hundreds of buckets of water from it, and it wouldn't lower noticeably. (unless it's a kiddy pool)
Personally, I want finite water, and maybe a new liquid from the ender to work as the infinte liquid, allowing builds that use an infinite liquid to still work.

I've made a few lakes with finite water with the pumping system. Rather then running back adn forth with buckets you have to lay the piping and pumping or make a single channel but after that the lake files itself.
Both should be removed, since infinite water makes no sense at all, and trekking to get your own water adds to the fun of the game. That's why I don't use these infinite sources of water. Ever.
Infinite water is the only way to make decent looking/working wells.
I wanna keep it even just for that.

What! I've channeled wells in finite all the time and put a raised platform around them. The water pressure dynamics of finite make this rather simple. As you scoop up water for personal use more is flushed in via due to fluid pressure.

Which is a mod.
So unless MC makes drastic changes regarding water and certain mechanics finte water is gonna suck balls.

Well we are not talking about the difference between no water and infinite water. This is about finite water vs infinite water. Finite can do many of the things infinite can do and add additional dimensions to the gameplay, you just can't keep an ocean in your pocket. I can assure you if finite water behaves liek water in that if flows, there is nothing stopping you from making an underground channel from an ocean, lake and directing into a well.
For those fearing that the water will be made finite, it's worth noting that I recall Notch saying on at least one account that he has no intention of rewriting the water physics.
Such a rewrite would be very destructive. Sure, void fog sucks for bedrock builders, but we can still build underground anyways. Endermen, when they were found to be destructive to most building styles, were nerfed accordingly. And none of the blocks that are normally available to the player have had any serious changes that would affect pre-made structures. I can literally pull a level straight from Indev or Infdev and load it into Beta 1.9 pre3 (converting the indev level as required), and everything I built back then will work perfectly fine now. If I played around with things that I shouldn't have had, like infinite water sources, gears, or leaves, then things might break a bit, but anything acquired legit would work just fine. But rewriting the water system would result in a huge mess where many maps that relied on water physics (being able to easily control water is part of the reason why we have the current system) would break at an instant.
I can see the problems with how finite water would work now, and so I believe it should not be changed now. If Notch were to do a complete overhaul of how water works, something similar to Dwarf Fortress, then I would support making it finite. The problem is that if Notch hasn't changed it so far I doubt he will change it now, seeing as all of the key systems of the game are in place. A shame really, because a new system of water could add something new and good for Minecraft, but the system right now works well too.

Minecraft makes me feel like I'm three. Playing with blocks and afraid of the dark.
As someone who has sunk more than his fair share of Dwarven Fortresses to the plague that is water pressure, finite water would add a lot of complexity to this game.
However, as someone who has sunk a lot of Dwarven Fortresses to water pressure, I heartily endorse bringing this threat to my castles.
As long as we get pumps, water wheels and mist too. And water adheres to pressure rules. This will result in quite a few flooded caverns though, which would be bad (I'm pretty sure 90% of the caves would flood, plus the sea level would drop 10-15 blocks :tongue.gif:).
yep, drop in the bucket, dj oslin's fantastic finite water mod should be a staple of the standard MC game, definitely. :smile.gif:

I remember when the water system we use now came out. That was a good day.
I made a water slide, and was generally confused on the strange nature of water, but now I cannot imagine Minecraft without it. Finite water would be interesting though.

"sometimes, wizards are so awesome, it hurts"
Unless Notch TOTALLY revamps the way water works.
Honestly, I'm fine with infinite water. It's fine the way it is.
However, I think it would be cool if we could MAKE mushroom stew in a cauldron, allowing us to get 3 full doses from it, instead of just one.
