Maybe I am wrong, but didn't Jeb say in one of his tweets before 1.8 was released that he wanted to have apple and cocoa trees. If we had trees that grew apples and we could get seeds from the apples to grow more trees we could have our own orchards. I would like my own orchard in Minecraft.
Maybe it hasn't been added because of how apple tress naturally are? You most of the time you cant actually grow apples from seed and have them be palpable. All commercialized edible strains of apples are clones. Red Delicious? Fiji? All grafted clones.Because apples have such a dense genome, you can plant a apple seed and it will taste completely different from its parents. And something like 95% of the time seedlings taste horrible.
But that might be too science for a video game. Haha.

Huh, never noticed that myself, We had an old apple tree that spawned a few others. All the apples from each of the 3 trees taste the same to me :/
Apples on trees could stop hunger but not actually replenish the bar. So if you eat one when you are just starting to get hungry, then they are a handy snack, but eventually you will need proper food. This would balance their greater availability and would make them handy for explorers.
I like this idea to it would be good to have a snack and not just food.
I don't believe regular apples are very powerful food, so I don't see a problem with a random tree appearing that when leaves are broken drops potentially apples and an apple tree sapling. The golden apple is pretty challenging to craft so I don't think having 100 apples will make golden apples anymore common, I believe it takes 8 gold blocks to make a golden apple.
Another way to go about it is by adding seeds from regular apples, plant those bad boys in the ground and watch 'em grow. You could even be lazy and just make the apple be the seed.
Either way golden apples are still very costly and will remain rare. It would also be nice when you're about to starve to death and you see an apple tree in the distance.
If apple trees were to be added into the game, I'd like them to require more care than normal trees. Once a tree is grown, apples should spawn hanging underneath occasionally, but if they don't get collected within a set time after they spawned, then they should rot and fall off. Fertilizer could be used on the tree to increase the life of the apple spawns to give you more time to collect. and there could be different levels of fertilizers too for longer times etc. other trees would be nice too, like banana and pear or orange bushes. Pehaps each type can only be grown in the right biome or must be a certain distance away from others.

Speaking of which, I had an opportunity to try a Sweet Tango apple recently. It's a new hybrid developed by the University of Minnesota. It was delicious. Screw curing cancer and AIDS, we need moar apples.
I don't think it needs to be that complicated. I can make a full grown tree instantly by pouring ground up bones on a sapling after all.

Ohh thats neat. I want to try one of the purple varieties.
And I have nothing against apples in game, of course. Maybe a small part of me is going to be all, "That's probably not going to taste very good.." When I grow them myself. But food in minecraft is food.
So, just posting something relevant to the topic that I thought was cool/interesting/actually educational! Most people don't know how weird apples really are, so I thought Id share.
Wild rice grows in marshes and shallow lakes, so maybe it could be found only in swamp biomes?
But that might be too science for a video game. Haha.

Sounds like your apple tree got pollinated by its own pollen. :smile.gif:
yes rice would be cool but with the new meats such as beef and chicken if we add to many foods it wont be hard to survive.

I currently have it so I have a 25% chance of getting an apple out of a 40% chance of getting a drop from a leaves block .
And thats not often I get an apple.
But fine, you can get your hopes up and play vanilla.
Nope, as far as the game goes you must download a mod to make trees drop apples.
Does anyone know/ have any ideas for the replacement?
Im not saying you cant use a mod for now but it would be cool to add them in, and for anyone who wants it would you post a link to your mod?
I'm pretty sure the actual buff itself is new in the 1.9 pre-releases.
