Let me just say I think 1.9 is wizard. I love the idea that breeding is coming, and I see why its necessary to turn off spawning first other wise there would be an unfair head start. But I have to ask, without being able to just spawn passives on your grass covered stronghold floor, how are you getting your animals? I managed to trap a pig out in the world and dig a tunnel from the pig to the middle of my base but that took an hour and was a serious pain in the ****.
tl;dr
how do you capture animals and get them in your base?
You need to explore new chunks to get new animals. You can read more about animal spawning from the link in my signature.
I am aware of your thread, and thank you for that, but you missed my question. I know how to find animals, and how to make them spawn. I am wondering how people get them into their base

Sorry, I had assumed that the question was a somewhat "choicey" worded "How do I get new animals", and not "How do I keep animals". Completely my mistake.
There are a few ways. For one, you can put them in Minecarts and push them where you want. The second is you can use water flow to push them to where you want. Others include using snowballs or fishing rods. As for keeping them, here's a good video on it:
Herding would be the correct word, thank you. Sorry for the poor wording of my post. Digging tunnels across chunks can be done, but is incredibly tiresome. I guess there aren't any better ways. Water int he tunnels may speed things up, and I will try snow balls. Fishing poles don;t seem to work for me, that is likely a failing on my part.

Truthfully, Minecart is the best option in my opinion. If you're short on rails, just put it on a single rail, get the animal in it, and then push it over the terrain. Takes a bit more time.
so, from what I understand then, if you get an animal in a minecart it will stay there? How would one go about getting an animal in a minecart? and further more, how do you get them out again? Sorry for the rapid fire questions, and thanks for the help. I'll get my self to the Wiki as well and look into the nature of minecarts.

There are a few ways. First, make sure the Minecart is against a solid block, so it can't move. Second, just push the mob over to the Minecart (read; in the minecart) and it will go in. Or, if you want to do it a different way, trap a mob in a box and push the Minecart into the mob, causing the mob to jump into the cart.
To get them out, just break the Minecart. And yes, it will stay there until you help it get out.

Other than that, I usually end up killing them with gravity/punches before they get where I want them.

More or less, no. It's pretty simple.
The word I think he is missing is "herding". He wants to know how to "herd" them into his pens/base.

Isn't that the same thing I said?
Head start for whom?
