Holy crap dude. Thanks for proving stuff wrong and giving info on all this. Thank you for taking the time to do these experiments. OH SH*T !!!! :biggrin.gif: :tongue.gif:
Not to crash the party or anything, but Mojang has already confirmed this stuff, haven't they? If you can call tweets confirmation, of course.
No, Mojang has never stated any specifics. They have not yet acknowledged the bug with untamed wolves (ie they despawn but basically never respawn).
The confirmation comes instead from looking at the code. We want to get this stickied so that Mojang does understand what is wrong with the system. It won't be fixed unless they know it is broken.
Seems like there's a lot of work to do on the animal system.
on the SMP server I play on, only one person has seen a wolf, they tamed it, and it died.
Animals I think need to reproduce a tad bit more in the wild, lest we have lifeless areas where people have slaughtered and not breed. It sounds like animal reproduction in the wild is very rare.
However, it is highly unlikely that you will get a mob to respawn on your world. The problem is that creating a spawning tower is giving a 4000% better chance at getting a mob to spawn than regularly playing, due to having many multiple different spawning spots for the algorithm to choose from. As such, these above videos should only be considered animal spawning under the heviest and most impractical circumstances available, and it is highly unlikely that this set of circumstances will be reproduced without sufficient time spent creating it in a real world situation. The data below still reflects 99% of natural Minecraft gameplay.
In 1.7.3 I filled a hole with any animal that spawned and took care for them to not despawn, and every time i captured one, less respawned. When 1.8 was released, there were 3 pigs, 2 cows, 3 sheep and some chickens. Even with all these mobs, yesterday a cow respawned near the hole. So even in a situation where they had even less chance to respawn, it happened.
I'm actually having animals despawn. Particularly sheep. I have an enclosed barn with 2 of each animal in it. I come back after awhile sometimes and find 1 disappeared. Its gettingto be a pain having to go back around and find another pig or sheep..
It's entirely possible you;ve built your barn "incorrectly".
Do you have a lot of room for the animals? They can shove each other into walls "suffocating" their pen mates and killing them. Also, if you have openings in the wall less than 4 tiles up, anaimals can "hop" onto each other and then "glitch/hop" through the window. Finally, fences don't work all the time, animals can glitch through them and out right hop over them by using another animal as a jumping platform.
DANG! :angry.gif: I hated 1.8/1.9 in the first place because of the food bar, but now we have BS like this? Is it just me or is Notch all of a sudden wanting to turn this game into a farming/RPG game? :dry.gif: Minecraft has indeed changed... and I do not like it... :sad.gif:
Can't believe this thread is still alive, I was sure it would die when breeding came out. If you guys want, I can update this with breeding information and keep it active for 1.9 1.10?
yes please if you find the time, update your findings for the latest pre-release as they would be probably the most accurate for squashing bugs out of the game.

I think the OP needs a bit of updating just to ensure that it doesn't confuse anyone who hasn't played the pre-releases. I mean, obviously it says "As of 9-22", but the casual player may not have the update dates fresh in the back of their mind.
Perhaps...
Then again, animals (pigs, chickens, sheep, cows) don't usually live in the desert unless there's an oasis or something and even then it's not exactly commonplace. Notch may have been lazy with the script by preventing animals from spawning if you terraform when he could have set it to not spawn on SAND, but then again it's fairly realistic as it is.
Oceans are more of cause for moaning I think.
Even so, you have to remember that cows etc are commonly domesticated animals, so they wouldn't be on small islands in the middle of the ocean.
Well, how will you terraform a desert before it loads and spawns the animals anyway? Is terraforming a desert really worth it if you only have 1/400 of the old chances of spawning an animal?
I think that this new animal spawning system sucks. Especially the wolves, they are impossible to find now. Might as well take them out of the game all together.
May the force be without you.

Now I'm confused.

Thanks for all the research, btw!

This is no longer relevant from what I see...
