It used to be that when you created a thread, you could type a bunch of words as tags, and then if you wanted you could select a little box that said "Use first tag as prefix" (or something to that effect, anyway. I don't remember the exact words) and the first tag would be displayed as a prefix to the thread name in the forum index.
As of the new update, that feature has been removed, and we're only allowed to select a prefix from a pre-written list of options, which is kind of a bummer. I liked being able to do that, and judging by how widely used it was, I think a lot of other people did as well.
I can't even find the field for adding and editing tags anymore.
We won't be allowing people to create their own prefixes, that is not on the roadmap. If you'd like to add or remove prefixes from a thread go to "Tools" then "Edit Thread" while inside the thread, that will take you to the edit screen (we're improving the ui on this, it'll be available from "edit" below an opening post very soon). At present it's not possible to order prefixes but it is being worked on, you'll be able to select which you'd like to show first.
Is "It's not on the roadmap" a fancy way of saying "just 'cause"?
it's a way of saying we have no plans of ever offering that feature. The reason is not "just because", it's because thread prefixes serve two purposes: 1. They allow members to clearly label their threads so that when another member is viewing the forum they can see at a glance what content is within that thread and 2. Thread prefixes allow members to filter sections by a prefix, for example if you'd like to see just 1.7.10 mods in Minecraft Mods you can filter by 1.7.10. If we allowed anyone to create a prefix then goal number one would be very very difficult (people creating prefixes won't have the same goal as us, they just wan their thread to stand out) and goal number two would be difficult because every thread would be prefixed differently. Prefixes only work well if they are consistent.
We are carefully curating the prefix system so that they are consistent and easy to understand across the forum, allowing anyone to create a prefix would compromise this goal and greatly reduce the effectiveness of the system, which is why it is not on our roadmap.
