I first noticed this in a small map generated in Omen. If the game is paused for a very long time, mobs swarm around the base, but skeletons completely disappear. This makes sense if there is a maximum number of mobs that can spawn within a certain distance of the player, since only skeletons fight with other enemies and are eventually killed, and are replaced with something else.
So I tested the idea by making a map selects for and traps randomly moving animals while eliminating AI:
not exact block count
Although monsters were much more likely to spawn, “constant selective pressure” caused pigs and sheep to be more common. About an hour later, spawning stopped, and pigs and sheep had completely replaced monsters...
Almost. Some monsters had spawned in solid glass. This is useful, though. A layer of glass 3 blocks deep will trap all mobs.
An ideal town for preventing spawning could have pits that trap animals and kill monsters near farms (though someone would have to wait in them), and have a 3 block layer of glass covering most other surfaces.
note: this might not work in in/infdev if the maximum distinguishes between animals and monsters, or if there is no maximum in infdev. Also I might not be on the forum for a few days because of class.
So the monsters would home in on you and fall to their death, to be replaced by other peaceful creatures?
This would be an awesome way to build a base.If you build a tube downward you could mine too.
