If you like the following, post words of encouragement, OR just support. Naturally i would like to know if you like it.
I Do really enjoy mine-craft, I laugh at how anything can be used as a weapon, and how for anything must be right clicked in order for it to be used for its true intention. Although I do find that having the true weapon items, swords and axes, not having a right click function is a little empty, I would like to change that. My first thought was magic, but i quickly decided that the idea was silly, imbalanced, and conflicting with the very practical nature of the game.
My Suggestion would add a new Equip slot to your inventory. In this equip slot you could place an item that could be any piece of degrading equipment. Upon right clicking with a weapon out, you will instantly switch to it if your sidearm is also a weapon, But also adding other gear that would normally be out of the question as a weapon into the slot, as well as adding some items exclusive to sidearm use, but do take note I will state the ones that are likely also to be suggested as an individual subject on someone Else's (sorry if this last bit is grammatically incorrect) thread last.
First I shall state the exceptions to the general rules I have set up in the previous suggestion.
Arrows are not a sidearm.
Flint and Steel : Flint and Steel adds its own secondary feature without the redundant fast switching, But in addition while using it as a sidearm with a bow both an arrow will be used and a charge of the flint. The arrow will have a large chance of lighting an enemy on fire.
Torches :--+:: While in the slot, you experience torchlight on your location.
Torches could be able to be used as a secondary weapon, But only be active when you are not wielding a hoe, bow, or block, as well the above flint. It would take a few seconds (or just one) to ready a flaming torch and you can throw it a limited distance (3 spaces if you look directly at something, up to 9 if you will arc it.)
This obviously destroys a torch and lights (perhaps with a minor chance of survival) a fire. Dynamite might be usable (But not likely), But it isn't stack-able in the slot, and has a small low power blast. You would throw a single stick of dynamite and take out a fourth of the dynamites durability, at the cost of the ability to place the dynamite. Once you throw your first stick, the sprite becomes a stick of dynamite.
Javelins:
Weaker than arrows, 2/5ths of the range, crafted by making an arrow but replacing the feather with a stick, this could only be achieved with a horizontal crafting. (With the addition of chickens the feathers will likely be just about as common as a stick.) The only advantage of a javelin is that it can be used with any weapon.
Javelins could also be more damaging at close range, But would be much weaker than an arrow at 2/3 of its maximum straightaway range.
Shield (Regrettable, it could get this thread shot down, but one of the most obvious additions):
I honestly would rather exclude shields.
Holding right click will lift it, Effectively absorb all damage in the direction you face, AND only the direction you face, BUT only the middle 66% of the screen. Shields break down rather quickly compared to armor, and be made by filling every space but the bottom corners with a material. Tapping right click pushes an enemy back at the cost of durability. Farther back than a weapon.
Cactus Shield: This part is half a joke:
Filling the center slot, or both the middle and top middle space of a shield recipe with cactus, half's durability, but adds recoil damage to the shield when taking melee blows. Shoves would do twice the damage of a punch, but would take twice as many durability points as normal.
Knifes are almost definitely pointless and NO.
No spears, They would be a primary weapon with very long reach, and that do as much damage as an arrow, but with much less durability than a sword. It would be a javelin crafted diagonally, with reeds instead of stick. THIS IS NOT A SUGGESTION, IT IS RATIONALIZING WHAT YOU MIGHT ADD.
Feedback is nice. Suggestions, Support, And flame.
Why not include the ability to break down dynamite into sticks that can be thrown, with less explosive power than regular dynamite, say one less layer for each material, and make it explode on impact?

javelins would be stronger than arrows due to the extra weight. but the less range would be right.
it should be crafted like an upside down shovel.

I love this idea. It should only destroy one block on each side though.
Thank you guys for your support.
Perhaps making it so dynamite also instantly breaks into four sticks when moved into that slot?
Also making it so a two by two grid of dynamite sticks becomes a bundle of dynamite again..... Thank you for your support.
I really don't like having javelins doing more damage, simply because they don't depend on having a bow, Which can be tricky to obtain sometimes. Of coerce, If you only craft a single javelin per recipe use it would be plenty balanced.

Not quite two weapons at once, having a weapon in the slot only allows quick-switching silly ( :
Combining weapons with tools for a right click function, due to their lack of them. Ex, having flint as a universal right click while using right click-less tools. Then adding items that are specifically made for that slot.

What's different from just having it in the item slot next to it and pressing the number key for it then?
I'm all for a previous weapon system a la Team Fortress 2 though, where pressing Q quickly whaps out the weapon you used last. Course, we'd need a reassignment of the drop item button then, but I think that's in the wrong place anyway.
As to right clicking weapons, I think they should just have an alternate attack. eg sword: mostly vertical swing or mostly horizontal swing, both with slightly different properties.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Sorry if I post in your thread once and never again, I forget who I have and haven't scrutinised.
I want to make javelins out of stone. They should behave pretty heavy and wont fly far but could act as a cheap ranged attack. Stone javelins should also deal less damage than iron javelins and be less accurate and fast because they are probably more crude.
Really Both arrows and javelins should be make-able out of any weapon material.
@ Resetting. Maybe so, But having a few replacement ability's would be cool as well. One does not obstruct the other.
I like the side arm idea, and I love the dynamite stick idea. From what I see, the only thing you guys are questioning is the key assignment (whether it's right-click or q or whatever) and this could be solved easily by simply having custom key assignments in the options menu that INCLUDE the mouse.

Hmm. I think the number of shield suggestions on he front page makes it worthy of a bump....
And a number of magic threads need to be obsoleted........
I'm amazed that this thread didn't get an a**load of flame while i was gone.
Thanks guys. (I'm especially amazed at how this wasn't shot down despite how unwelcome addition suggestions are.)
