Pretty good stuff here. The lowest my opinion drops on any of these is impartial, there's nothing here I'm really against.
I think that's the best land claim idea I've seen so far. I'd include some kind of mini claim flag though, so a town could establish a settlement elsewhere either for resources or just fortification. It wouldn't be expandable, but provide some of the same protection to a small area remote to the starting area itself. These would have to be limited in quantity per town, maybe 4, one for each compass direction.
Well ****. I hoped I'd get a few "cool beans" and maybe a "sweet" for these ideas AT BEST, but this is rebonkulous. Thanks a ton, fellahs.
I might see if I can come up with a couple more ideas in a minute (I just woke up and it's like 6 p.m.), and I might see if I can come up with an underwater dwelling solution that hasn't been mentioned yet, as requested. I have an idea or two for water mobs already.
I've got another multiplayer thing in my head, it's nothing big, but it's something that can make sieges a little more interested. I'll probably append it to the end of the Settlement idea.
+1 For the elementals
+1 For Rope and well
+2 For the totem
I think that if we are going to have to have a land claim like system this is the way to do it. It isn't impossible for other players to take resources from a claimed area, it just takes longer, it would also allow for communities. The ability to add players and ranks would be a must, and would make lots of sense. The "Owner" of the land provides a safe place to build and the community works under that, when it grows, more people are able to donate resources to make the area that the community encompass larger. While i can see some problems with exploits in large area grabs, the price for expansion could grow exponentially, rewarding people who took the time, or actually do have villages, while seeming like a daunting task to raise that much resources for griefers.
I like the water mob ideas too. Well thought out siege section. I like most of it except the blocking people from entry if they die. Granted, it's a good method, but it seems a little much in a way. I can't think of anything better, though, so it has my support.
I couldn't think of anything else better, either, so don't sweat it. I know it's a little heavy-handed, but it's more of a placeholder until I think of something.
the bridge and hatch are probably my favorite ideas. i've plummeted into the abyss of an infinite cave system many times due to not being quite as skilled as other people must be with placing blocks on the block in front of me. the hatch would be rather useful as a "**** you, AI" type mob deterrent, and would be very nice for certain rp settings.

Would you dare to meet the gaze of the basilisk, or face the flames as the phoenix burns?
The rest of the ideas are cool,
the mob ideas are original (except for the elementals.)
item ideas would add a lot more depth.
but the meat of this suggestion, THE SETTLEMENTS!
Oh god, I made a thread almost entirely similar to what you thought up. But the varied items are cool! I thought of expanding areas through paying gold to get more land, but the idea of population = land is much more balanced and ingenius. I do say sir, you have me intrigued.

Yeah, I'm not even going to pretend half of my ideas are original in the slightest, since this forum has been around for a while and there are TONS of posts, but I figured I'd throw them up anyway, with my own little changes.
So if players can't place blocks on claimed land, couldn't a person make a flying fortress and guard the stairs(to the land) with lava and no one would be able to destroy the totem?

These are some really good ideas. Sweet mercy, there's a lot of them too. Well made diagrams as well? You've outdone yourself, sir! Let me go through them one by one. Charger
Notch has said that he wants each mob to be different so I'm not sure if the relationship to the pig will fly. However, it sounds quite fun to fight and to watch fight other things. Maybe you could consider making it passive unless it or a nearby pig is attacked. That would make hunting more challenging without having to make the day dangerous. Leaper
Good idea. I've always disliked how easy it is to make mob-impenetrable walls. Elemental
Sounds interesting, though I don't like the tree elemental. Fish
I love seafood. Good idea. The only addition I would say is maybe you would have to craft a fishing rod for them to approach you for you to whack. Jellyfish
Again, sounds good. I dislike any particle effect enemies. Maybe they could bioluminecent? Reinforced Materials
Sounds great. Right now any player created wall is child's play to get through. This idea allows us to make better walls without making some resources like wood useless. Nice Rope
Sounds like a good ingredient. However, I think this is only a good idea if you can craft cloth into string. Otherwise this stuff will be way too rare to make it worth making. Holdable torches
A simple and good idea that Notch is already working on, I think. Your take on it's recipe is quite intuitive as well. Pipes
There's actually another suggestion thread for pipes. I still say yes. It's a much neater way to move water than trenches. Crossbows
I like different types of ranged weaponry for SMP. They'll allow combat to become more complex. Also, I think the crossbow is a better implementation of the "more powerful/slower firing" ranged weapon than the gun. Wells
This is the one idea I don't like as much. Sure, they'd be useful but with the way water works you'd need a setup of water below it that generates more water spring blocks. That source would be easily sabotaged or even eliminated by accident. Woven Cloth
Again, more crafting materials are usually good. This sounds good. Spear Only if you can also stick it in the ground to form palisades :wink.gif:. Bridge Piece
Looks like a more elegant way of bridging gaps than big 1 meter cubed pieces of stuff. Repair and upgrade
I like Repair. All our tools shouldn't all be disposable but some ideas for regenerating durability would simply make one tool useful forever. Here, there's a cost to repair tools but it's less than the cost of a new tool so it encourages saving tools. Upgrade might be hard to not make overpowered or no one will use un-upgraded tools anymore. It's a good idea in concept but I think it's a bit too cheap. Totems
This is the first land-claim idea I like. It gives you an advantage on home turf but doesn't make your stuff invincible. Also, more people are required to have a larger area, encouraging clans. However, this idea isn't perfect. I don't like how there are finite ranks based on the totem. I do like how it makes Siege warfare a bit harder. I'm really looking forward to it, but it won't be fun if you make a 10 cobblestone thick wall coated with iron only for people to easily dig through or go over. There's got to be a challenge.
Overall, a bang-up suggestion thread! Maybe it could have been put in the wish-list forum, but I won't blame you if you didn't see it under the dust. Welcome to the forums!
BUT I love the rest of your ideas
