I'm in the process of making a double layer natural light farm with the glass that covers the bottom row serving as the walkway for the top row. I'll update this whenever I finish.
can anyone tell me how to use the simg tags? first post! yay! man first time on the photobucket thing too BTW i'm 10
On topic:i just built a two story modified version of the OP's farm

I was just about to finally get around to building a farm near my safe house ((slack off on fishing, and pig slaying)) wasn't sure where to start, but now I think I'll copy your design and use light stones... tyvm.

farming method I have found quite sucsessfull is making the farm underwater, because it is in such a close proximity to so much water, it takes 2 days for a harvest

Use simg in place of img, not in addition to img. The copy/pasted link already has img, just add "s" to them to get simg.
I built it kinda lodged into the mountain so that I would be able to access it from inside my base but not have to hollow out a big room. Also beccause it looks awesome. There's one block missing so I could have a viewing spot.
Well, since we seem to be in a photo-posting mood at the moment, here's my farms (wheat in front, with reed behind). They're both based on ideas posted in this thread, although I've increased the wall height a fair bit to stop the drops from landing on top of the walls, and the floors are mostly glass since I have these on raised platforms.

Hans, I love your design. Here's a version I did as a cantilevered greenhouse next to my house.
The top floor is short for wheat, the bottom is tall for reeds.

You inspired me to make one!

Yay!!! I'm helping!!! I never thought of using my "Farming Module" in a "protrude from the house" kind of fashion, that's really cool. My initial intent was to have something compact that can fit into underground bases, but your designs make great use of glass walls for viewing windows and transforming these into stylish rooftop gardens. Or whatever you call what you did.

Yeah, an extra layer of height on the walls can indeed save you the frustration of those stray seeds and bushels that fly up and land atop them. They just sit there mocking you saying "You built this farm so that you wouldn't have to trample your fields any more...now look where that's got you!!! BWAHAHAHAAA!!!!" Stupid #^@&%* flying seeds.
Also I see that you used the spiral-farm design. You like? Does the single-path harvesting work out as well in practice as it does in theory? (I have personally run into problems with all the corners, since they break up the "flow" of the harvesting, slowing you down and causing you to make mistakes. I think the "ideal" farm for efficient harvesting and planting would be one that's completely linear...but that would be impractical to make and would lack stylishness. Maybe ringing the inside of some compound walls...)

Thanks a lot for the hints in this threat. By extending my farm room by 1 block and doing the redesign from this thread I was able to nearly triple my harvests!
Here's my farm before (lots of trampling!):
and here's my new farm (need to reinstall my texture pack):
