So...yeah, I'm mostly done now. I don't feel like updating this post, so just scroll down until you see destruction.

This is the general area around my spawn. Not only does it not have any particular epicness to it, the many low, rolling hills obstruct my view terribly. And it's a snow biome with no snow falling in it, resulting in ugly patches over the landscape. That ugly tower is the result of a botched and over-complicated attempt at getting a record.
The solution?
You see, I didn't want to start a new world; I like working with what I'm given. But I also didn't want to stick with my boring living space. I've already completed a deep-underground Parthenon with a Sacrifice-O-Matic altar connected to an underground animal farm and explored a huge cave system. All my work underground and none above-ground made it an easy decision for me to decide to carve tremendous chunks out of the surface with explosives. So I went ahead and created a monster trap and am now gathering lots of gunpowder from it.
The destruction will continue until the area in the black border is bare to the stone or until I get bored. In its place will be a landscape ravaged by famine and war, with not a patch of grass or a tree in sight. Meanwhile, a lone stick figure looks on.
Everything is going to be done entirely without hax. And when it is complete, I will move upwards a way to a nice forest I found while looking for cactus and I will build my first-ever base there.
I will also be planting and burning trees to create that evil-looking forest fire landscape so many of us know and love.

So...what's the point of making a thread complaining about my spawn area, then? I will tell you: We all know and love it.

That will take a while

Yes, it is. It was the best stick figure I could find easily.
Back on topic, I'm working my trap all night, every night to give me gunpowder. So far, I've tested on a relatively small scale (less than a stack of TNT blown up) to decide how I want to do this. It seems that the best spread is approximately 1 TNT every 4-5 blocks, less if there is a lot of vertical space between them.
The area that I am going to destroy is about 315x240, with some water in it; it will take between 4,000 and 5,000 TNT to destroy (by my estimation).
That's a total of 20-25,000 gunpowder, or almost 400 stacks.
I got 1,500 easily in a few hours during the day and one night; if I devote my inventory exclusively to gunpowder, I may be able to get 36 stacks a night (not tested yet).
I will also need a large part of the sand on the island.
In other words, I should be able to finish fairly comfortably before Christmas. I'll be blowing it up in many smaller explosions--probably one per day.
I plan on keeping this updated with my progress. The first explosion should come later today.
To be honest, I've thought of this, but the sheer amount of TNT needed without hacking was outside my patience quota. I have done some large TNT mining on another map where I allow hacking, but only made some epic vertical shafts to bedrock and then connected them, drilling up under the ocean in the process.
Be sure to make a Cartographer/c10t map set, each time you do an explosion, and maybe run them together in a GIF animation. That would be pretty cool.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
Alright; I have finished the first day of explosions.
I think that the affected area should be pretty obvious. The ravaging is going much faster than I expected; I underestimated the power of TNT and overestimated how many chain explosions I would have.
Also, I'm burning the forest down. I will also replant a forest and burn that also. I like the look of burning trees in a ravaged landscape.
I feel like a mad scientist when I'm making and placing TNT blocks. It's awesome.
Awesome. I never use hacks either, (I don't even play on peacefull, call me crazy) but there's no way in hell I would ever do something as big as this, I just wouldn't have the patience...
Sweet try posting the original and the after match in the same post want your going to do match 2.
Even cooler would be having the normal picture and when your mouse over it you see the after XD
Wow...update fail. I did not give up on this project, I just had a lot of finals and stuff and didn't really have time to update this thread.
I'm pretty much done, though. This is the progression:
A lone stick figure gazes upon the wreckage:
Finally, the view from the top of the stick figure:
There is still a bit of work to do -- I need to add more burning trees, a couple more lavafalls, and finally, my blazing signature tower in the center of the landscape.
Before I do that, though, I have a question: What is the best way to make lava flow in a spiral with maximum visibility? Should I just surround it in glass and make the glass texture subtle, or is there some cool way to control the flow? I may just experiment, but I'd like to hear ideas.
Anyway, this continent was a heck of a lot of fun to destroy. I may make a GIF of the images, if I feel like it.
The explosions will continue until morale improves.
I have that pillow.
Watch out; its contents will probably unionize and demand better wages.
Also; one thing I forgot to mention: There is still grass in this continent. Just not on it. I have a deep underground animal farm that I can spread to other areas, in addition to a chain of grass going all the way down to bedrock. :biggrin.gif:
Build a floating death castle over it. It will cover the world in darkness. Dump some lava on the top of a mountain and burn trees for some light to give it a eerie look.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

So, good luck, and god speed. Ill be watching for updates.
I do maps and stuff.

That's why I did it--it makes my spawn point look epic instead of epicfail. :biggrin.gif:
