I actually haven't heard of this. You mean below falling sand, like a torch? Please clarify. (I'll test it out anyway.)
I'm assuming it works like the torch trick already does. This probably means it works just as well with gravel, but probably still doesn't get you any flint.
I've never heard of half blocks doing this, either. It's kind of obvious, but I guess I just never thought about it.
Someone made a video about this a few days ago, it works with both sand and gravel.
Any block that isn't a full one will work for breaking that sort of thing, such as mushrooms, flowers, half blocks, torches, so on. (or, at least, so i've been told)
