It's important for everyone who wants to learn how to use Redstone in Minecraft to build as much as they can from templates and, of course, their imaginations. But! For those of us with larger projects in mind, it might help to have something quick on hand just to pop in there and wire up.
I'm hoping that we can build a repository of generic built prefabs that we can all stick together to make some really cool stuff. Here - I've built (and mostly labeled) a few things that may possibly prove useful for anyone interested. I've tried to make these as compact, but also as user friendly as possible so that wiring it to your own project can be simple.
The following downloads are all in McEdit Schematic format.
8x8 display with 64-bit memory.
Why? How the hell should I know, I just build the things... Each pixel on the display is mapped to a bit of memory in the tower. Map to stored ROM images?
3 bit binary to decimal (0-7) converter with power rails
This is the 3-bit Binary to Decimal (0-7) converter from the Minecraft Wiki with the addition of pre-built power rails. Just plug your project in to the 3 inputs and watch it go!
I don't even touch the stuff . . . way too complicated imho . . .

Thanks! I'm working on a few other things too. I'm probably not going to bother with some of the more simple stuff like combination locks and whatnot since I think people should learn that on their own. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing an 8 bit ALU posted here or something of it's ilk.
Great idea! I haven't really gotten into redstone much YET, but this is a great resource, and I'm sure I'll end up using it when I start trying more complex things.

You can probably make your memory module quite a bit smaller (and the storage behind the displays as well) using this 2x4x5 D-latch I came up with. Here's a 2x3x5 version if you don't need to chain them side-by-side.
I also have a thread about my ALU module (1-bit, can be chained to produce n-bit ALUs) here.
I wonder if these are more appropriate for the wiki than the forums. There are a number of threads with these kinds of things (the "red stuff" logic gates thread has a ton) but I think the scope is a little too broad for a single wiki page. Perhaps the existing page should be split up into specialized sections for each component. There's a lot of stuff on the forums that isn't up anywhere else, and you really have to dig for some of it.

Dude! Thank you! That looks a hell of a lot more efficient than my model. I'm still having issues trying to understand the schematics that the redstone simulator pumps out but I seem to be getting it slowly. I'm trying to build your design now so I get wrap my head around it better. i'll try popping it in to redstone sim and see if that makes more sense too. I agree completely that we should start updating the wiki with this stuff. There needs to be a central repository for redstone seeing as it seems to be a game all by it's self.
I'll keep digging in to what you've given me and see what I can come up with. Thanks again!
After some careful consideration and a lot of frustrating trial and error, I've managed to pare down the memory to a single 6x1x2 design using only two torches.

Looking at it this way, the top torch faces right and the bottom faces left with wires at the ends. The output is inverse and also used at the reset.
Is there any real purpose or practical use for this stuff? or is it just "look what I made, it's impressive looking"

yep, y'know what? I totally found that out too just playing around with my design and yeah... I feel like an idiot. BUT! Onward and upward, yes?! I've added a reset bar to the row so it all works like it's supposed to. I'll edit the post and put the new schematic up if anyone wants it.
I can't even get two iron doors to open at the same time.
I recently figured out how to make double doors work, it's putting it into a building that's that hard part.

Yeah you need to be an engineer to use that stuff for more than opening doors. now if you could power mine carts that would be cool.
